“good times”

I was hitchhiking from Uvita to Manuel Antonio. Some dude picked me up, but insisted on grabbing a beer at the Gecko. The place was empty except the bartenter and some dude. Everyone bought me beers and soup, It was totally cool and the people were nice. It was a positive experience!

“Food Average - Price Astronomical”
Reviewed May 3, 2012

The food wasn't terrible, but they definitely were banking on tourists not finding "out of the way" places. They are right on the main road, and the location can't be missed. But, you should miss it. The prices were very high for that area. We had much better meals for less!

“Personal Service in Paradise”
Reviewed April 14, 2012

We ate here for a week. Each time we were tempted to go somewhere else we were disappointed. On our snorkeling trip we spoke of it and folks from another hotel decided to join us for dinner. They said it was the best food of their two-week trip through Costa Rica. When La Cusinga Eco Lodge is full, the meal is buffet style and beautifully spread. Most of the time during our stay, the lodge was not completely booked and we were served at our seats overlooking the Pacific. Four courses every night, so come to dinner with an appetite. The soups were some of the best I've had. The salads always fresh and the entries obviously made by people who love to cook. Dinner is served at 7:00 with the night's faire listed on a whiteboard. Tasty accommodations are available for vegetarian, vegan, and other food specifics if you let them know ahead of time. Dennis's home made ice cream was just a little bit addicting. They finally started serving my husband and I two scoops instead of one since we couldn't get enough! When we made friends during our adventures, the staff was happy to move us to a table better suited for a group, and when we wanted privacy, that felt right as well. Lunch is also delicious as is breakfast, although I don't know if you have to be staying at the lodge to get breakfast or not. Lovely place, lovely people, lovely food.

“Very Accomadating”
Reviewed August 12, 2011

This restaurant was a very nice treat. We forgot to make reservations, but upon arrival the owners stil made sure we were fed and accomadated for. We didn't get much of a choice since we didn't have reservations, but the food they gave us was delicious (pasta and chicken quesadas). If you go, make sure to call in advance so they have time to prepare your meal. We went at night, but the location is great so I'm sure when it's light out you can see an amazing view. We were also able to bring our own bottle of wine to the restaurant, which was nice since we can sometimes be picky about the kind of wine we want. The prices were also very descent. I really liked that they made sure we left with a smile on our faces and full stomachs. They truly care about their restaurant and their customers.

“Destination Dining on the Southern Pacific Coast”
Reviewed May 3, 2011

Plan to have dinner at the Gecko Restaurant, as it is the best in the area.

Make no mistakes, this is destination dining in a completely rustic setting. We had dinner there on a tip from friends who travel regularly to Costa Rica, and it was a fantastic experience.

The meal started with a pitcher of homemade Tamarind juice. We were served a fantastic sweet potato soup with fresh local grown herbs. Our next course was a light salad of local garden grown vegetables, including some of the sweetest cucumber we've ever eaten. Our next course was a stuffed red local pepper, which was so savory, it was hard to believe it was vegetarian, served with a flavorful side of herbed mashed potatoes. Things wrapped up with homemade vanilla ice cream and a chocolate sauce over slices of young fresh white fleshed pineapple, grown on the premises.

We brought our 6 year old, and they were fantastic with her, willingly making her a separate butter noodles entree and all the starters and dessert, and charging us half the adult price. A four course dinner of this caliber, at $20 US a person, was our best meal and best deal of the trip.

The highlight here are the sunset views of the coast from on top of a breathtaking lookout. While they do serve wine with dinner, they don't serve other alcohol, so if you want beer or a Ron and Coke, you can bring them in to watch the sunset. Just ask for a bucket of ice and glasses, sit back, and enjoy the breathtaking view and some fantastic food.
