went diving with Scuba Junkie in December last year, and it was one of the best dive holidaies I have had! I booked everything 3 months in advance, and once we arrived, everything was taken care of. I am very impressed by how organised yet flexible they are! I made changes to my plan, which they accommodated without problem, and they have good records of all their operations, so the billing process at the end was smooth too. I just had to dive, eat, sleep, talk about diving and pay the bill at the end. so relaxing! I look forward to going back there again!

Hello,
I was very disappointed by this diving center.
First, I booked for a transfer since the airport. In the mail, they told me I had to pay 45 RM. But they charged me 90 RM because: "There was suppose to have an other person but he didn't come". And I replied: "So, I have to pay for him, I don't know this person!". And they say: "sorry, but you have to."
Do you think this is correct?
Second, the accomodation in Semporna is more than basic. For the same price, go to dragon inn or sipadan scupa which are a lot better.
Third, accomodation is so expensive: you pay 250RM if you are alone for a simple bungallow. Food is incuded but it's mainly fried noodle or fried rice with some vegetables, so cheap food, no fish or seafood at all! Except the cookies at 4PM are delicious.
Fourth, some instructors are great, some are very bad. I am divemaster certified since several years. One time, the instructor lost his students, so we had to stay with them after he found them we had to swam against a very strong current without visibility!!! Never see that in my life! And the 3 student had only 7 dives before! TOTALLY CRAZY!
Fifth, it's very hard with them to find a Sipadan permit. The best for that is contact uncle Chang or Sipadan scupa. I did with them and it was ok except the diving time: no more than 45mn and only 3 dives in Sipadan. With Scuba Junkie, you can dive 60mn and they have 4 dives in Sipadan.
Sixth, when I understand I will have no choice to get a permit to Sipadan (I booked 2 months before!), I cancel the booking and the manager in Mabul said: "I don't if I can do it because I had to refuse some bookings for you". Hopefully, I didn't pay before so he couldn't do anything to avoid the refund. Do you think is it correct?
So, two advises:
-First, if you really want to dive in Siapadan, that is really amazing, go to an other dive center, sipadan scuba or uncle chang.
-Second, if you really want to dive with scuba junkie, don't pay anything before.

I read the last reviews and I agree with most of them .I stayed 5days in Mabul and one day in Semporna in February 2010.
I won't get into much details because I see others were kind enough to do that already , so here are my impressions:
--Scuba Junkie Hostel in Semporna : not very good, in line with the very very dirty Semporna, but very very cheap - we stayed there for the first night
--Scuba Junkie Resort in Mabul : very nice rooms at good prices (ensuite fan room at Mabul Beach resort RM99 per person per night), average food , great for divers , good staff: very organized , not exceptionally friendly but most of them very good professionals.
--Diving : excellent . Do NOT miss Sipadan! You have to book in advance in high season!
The only problem we had with them was that the pickup from the airport did not show up. We talked to another shuttle's driver from another resort that was picking up some people on the same flight with us, he called the guys at ScubaJunkie and we went with this guy and payed him about 80RM for 2 persons if I recall correctly. So fortunately the problem was solved pretty smoothly.

Consider my ratings to be for the resort and diving .
The hostel has poor conditions but is very very cheap(ensuite Semporna RM60).

Room Tip: Booked online directly with them an ensuite fan room at Mabul Beach resort and we were very happy wi...

SJ hostel is old but clean and cheap (discount when diving to). Go to Mabul island and stay at the SJ longhouse. F&B is included and is okay for what you pay. Staff is great, friendly instructors and skilled to. Equipment is good and the owners try to do there share in helping and employing to local community. Go to the shark presentation at the SJ resort, will blow you away. Go there!

We booked our trip 3 months in advance and only after stating that we were not booking without at least one day guaranteed in Sipadan, two permits were magically located. Upon arrival, the rooms were disappointing to say the least. Nothing was provided-soap, shampoo, etc., while the room was comfortable, it was pretty basic. The food is simple, but not bad and the bar is well stocked with drinks.

The management is where the problem lies. They gave us the impression that they didn't care nor had the time to deal with any problems/concerns we had unless money was involved. Rowan acts friendly, but you get the message that he has more important things to do. The female manager had no interest in us other than to ask for money.

We stayed there for 3 nights, after which Scuba Junkie said they booked us into SDC. Upon arrival at SDC, we were told that no such booking existed. Just another example of bad management. On our last day of diving, one of their boats broke down, so divers were shuffled and made to wait for over 3 hours. The last dive had to be cut short as the boat had to go back to Semporna. We were unhappy with our dive time being cut.

Scuba Junkie is definitely not a friendly resort-other than a standard greeting, no one has time to chat. The divemasters eat at their own table and don't mingle outside of the dives. Pay attention to the quality of your air, the first 3 days, their air left a oily aftertaste and gave us headaches.

However-the divemasters, for the most part, are friendly, professional and know their way around the dive sites. Specifically, if you MUST go to Scuba Junkie, ask for Dan, Kevin or Luke.

My main complain at the SJ hotel at Semporna was the loud music..yes extreme loud music that starts around 9.00 p.m. and last until about midnight. It really did not make sense that the management have no consideration at all for tired guests. The hotel at Mabul was beautiful.....however, the food was rather boring eating the almost same meals everyday. My rating refers to the hotel in Semporna.

We stayed one night at SJ hotel in Semporna. We walked in and everything was fine (just to get us in and pay). They said they had free wi-fi but it never worked (and a manager admitted afterwards they already knew about the problem for a week!). Worst thing was when a live music band started playing downstairs at the bar around 9PM, and did not stop until midnight! I went down to talk to the manager and the comment was: "I appologize for the inconveniences, I will be more than happy to refund you so you can look for another accommodation". Can you imagine? Pack everything at 9PM and look for another place to stay. I found that terrible. Whatever!
Room confort was bad, matress was awful, and I can confirm it after talking to another couple that stayed at the same hostel and made exactly the same comment about matresses.
Diving with them was OK. Groups of 4+dive master. Not the cheapest though. And the accomodation in Mabul is just average, but better than in Semporna, definetely.
