“Nice upstairs location, bad western food!”
Reviewed June 21, 2013

I ate here twice during my week in Semporna. The local style food was ok, the set menus are decent value and they do good fruit shakes (remember to ask for no sugar or they will instantly rot your teeth!), you may get something different to what you order though as the waiters are easily confused!! My second visit I decided to be brave and try the western food - bad bad mistake, its terrible!! I should have been suspicious after seeing giant prawn covered in a slice of processed cheese on the western section of the menu... tough cold meat, a few cold chips, definitely not worth the RM20 or so I paid for it. In brief, ok for local food but if you want a break from rice and noodles and fancy some really nice western food - go down the road to Scuba Junkie restaurant!

“Love the Mango Sago!”
Reviewed May 17, 2013

We eat here many times over the past 6 years (we like to dive Mabul, and Sipadan and use Semporna as our first and last night's base)

The food is definitely not outstanding but also not as bad as the 3 other reviews suggest. Mabul Cafe actually used to be one of the better restaurants in the area before Semporna started to experience somewhat of a boom and other good restaurants popped up over the past 2 years.
Today there are probably better places in Semporna, but we can’t judge as we only had our favourite Mango Sago this last visit.

The Sago was perfect... same as in the past years! It's the best Mango Sago we’ve ever had. And thankfully the crew shared the recipe with us, but there's nothing like the original.

Give the Sago a try, it's less than 2 US$.

PS: mango sago is shaved ice desert, with mango juice and bits of fresh mango on a base of Sago (a gelatinous ball the size of a pin head made from palm root extract) check out the picture

“Good place to kill time”
Reviewed March 12, 2013

I'm not a foodie. But Mabul cafe were extremely poor in terms of what they had on the menu and what they had in stock. Once we'd found something they could cook, it was good enough, but we'd elimated 50% of the menu by that time.

However, they did make good milkshakes and fresh fruit juices, which were nice.

Also there was plenty of space, power sockets around the place and free wifi. We had no compunction against hanging out here for a few hours whilst we waited for the bus and lots of other people were clearly doing the same thing.

The toilet door doesn't really shut which was a bit awkward...

“Disappointing!”
Reviewed February 26, 2013

We were very disappointed of the rip-off at mabul cafe. We ordered a 500g fish for 30MYR with vegetable and rice, the fish turned out not even half the weight and for the plain tiny portion vegetable they charged 12MYR (you can have big breakfast for two for that price). We tried to complain that the fish wasn't 500g and the vegetable too expensive but just rude response. Big TV screens with loud movies ruin the atmosphere. Wouldn't go there again!
