“Very disapointing”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2013

I went on one of the advertised snorkelling trips with this company. When booking we asked if it was a dive trip which we were tagging along to and were asured it was a snorkling trip and we would be taken to several different spots pointed out on a map.

In reality this was not the case, there were aprox 10 snorklers amd 3 divers on the boat. We arrived on an island amd were told to snorkel and be back in an hour to move on, we than had to wait another hour for the divers to return then to be told we were staying in the same place fpr another hour because the divers needed more time. Only because i complained did we move to"a different site" which turned out to be a couple of hundred metres away which i had swam to earlier.

We were treated as inconvieniencs by the staff and it is extremley over priced for what you get. I would recomend using a different company if you want to snorkel

“Review for diving and Mabul beach resort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2013 via mobile

We walked in off the street and managed to book 2 days of diving and 1 night of accommodation on the Mabul beach resort.

Staff in scuba junkie office were helpful and polite

Diving around Mabul and Kapalie was fantastic. 6 dives and turtles on every dive. Fantastic much diving also with lots of nudiebranches, ghost pipefish to name a few.
Scuba junkie employ a lot of people and have probably 100 ish divers every day. I imagine it is not an easy task planning each day but we were impressed on the efficient ness of the operation.

Equipment is in good order, BCD's pretty new as is most of the other gear. Small groups with a DM. I was diving with my girlfriend and most of the time it was just us two with our own DM.

Food at Mabul resort is buffet style and is good.

Didn't stay in the scuba junkie hostel in Semporna so can't comment but the pizza in their restaurant is top notch grub!

As it was last minute we didn't even try to get permits for Sipadan. You should book plenty of time in advance.

Would love to go back and would defo use scuba junkie again

“Abysmal service and cleaning questionable”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2013 via mobile

I wasn't expecting a lot but the dodgy electrical socket, lack of towel or explanation when when checked in that you had to pay a deposit for one, no soap at all, empty toilet roll in holder, dirty sink... the basic things are tragically poorly executed. The whole deal is fairly expensive so the hostel linked to it could at least be clean and friendly.

“Sipadan lives up to its reputation!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 23, 2013

First above all, be advised that you really need to book in advance to make sure you get a 3 or 4 dive day around Sipadan Island as there are only 120 permits per day which permits are shared amongst the various dive shops depending, it seems, of how long they have been operating (for example, Borneo Divers have 14 permits a day, Scuba Junkie 7, Billabong 7, Uncle Chang 7, and so on). I booked my package 45 days prior and it was tight. I met lots of people in Semporna and on Mabul Island that were on waiting lists to dive Sipadan Island (some tried to book it 3 weeks before and were still on waiting lists).

I did a 3D2N package with them at Mabul Beach Resort (see separate review for the resort if need be). I dived around Mabul, Kapalai and Sipdan Barrier Reef on 2 days (3 dives a day) and the last day around Sipadan Island (4 dives that day). Sipadan Island has indeed lived up to its reputation of world class diving. The huge schools of jack fish (thousands) and barracudas (hundreds) were the most memorable moments I had (particularly when they swirl around you in a kind of vortex... amazing), but one has to remember that Sipadan Island is for the big stuff. Indeed, you stop counting the amount of whitetip reef sharks, green and hawksbill turtles you see in a dive. The turtles are the biggest I've seen. Mabul, Kapalai and Sipadan Barrier Reef were more for muck/macro diving with lots of nudibranchs, hairy squat lobsters, peacock mantis shrimps and so on.

However, I was surprised and a bit disappointed to find out that most of Scuba Junkie's dive masters were not local dive masters. For example, I was lucky enough to book a day trip from Semporna to Sipadan Island with a dive shop called Uncle Chang (probably the cheapest and a reliable one that also has a resort on Mabul Island... got there at 7:30 am... a Sipadan Island permit had been cancelled the day before and I was on a boat at 8 am diving as a spy named Clare Petran for 3 dives at 710 ringgits!) Most of them came from UK and Australia and were not permanent there. However, I must admit that they were very competent dive masters, special thanks to Antony Scott, Dean Jeankins and Ben Mallett, particularly Antony who spotted loads of the small stuff. The dive masters were also very accurate in meeting at 6:30 evening time at the bar to log our dives and discuss marine life we saw.

Special thanks also to awesome local boat captain Ronnie, amazing energetic fellow!

I would recommend Scuba Junkie as they are well organized, equipment is in good condition and you are sure to have your Sipadan Island dives once they confirm (even without deposit!) your booking once you are taking it.

“Highly recommended”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2013

As a first time diver, this was a great place to experience scuba diving. We saw loads of marine life that you wouldn't see in most diving sites...including huge turtles. The resort was a great place to stay, especially for solo travellers like me. I stayed in the dorm rooms on mabul island and met loads of like minded, friendly and interesting people. The staff at the resort and the diving instructors themselves were highly attentive and friendly. Special thanks goes to Dani my diving instructor who was very patient with me (I acted like a big baby at times as I didn't really like the feeling of being underwater the first day!). He even suggested getting up earlier the next day to finish working on the skills needed to pass the open water course. Anyway, I ended up passing and it was due to his patience and excellent communication skills. Thanks again scuba junkie, gina.
