“A fantastic place to do our first ever dive, felt we were in very safe hands”

We've just got back from doing out Open Water with Scuba Junkie on Mabul Island. We had a really fantastic time and Scuba Junkie organised everything and made sure everything ran smoothly and was 110% safe at all times. It's got to be the most professional scuba operator in Semporna. We were impressed with attention to detail from the food to the turtle hatchery and shark sanctuary, yoga in the mornings, quality of the rooms and friendliness of the staff - all very good value overall.

In particular, Yasmin Lee, our Scuba Instructor for the course, was magnificent. She was patient, supportive and flexible; making sure the course was tailored as much as possible to our pace of learning. We had lots of fun with her, taking photos, doing tricks and spotting marine life under the water and overall just made passing so much easier for us.

Unusually I am writing a review about snorkelling with a dive company when normally I would be reviewing the diving. On the day before I flew out to Semporna my GP diagnosed me with asthma and I was not allowed to dive. We had booked Sipadan permits and were both supposed to dive for 6 days. I decided to go ahead with my holiday and am very glad I did. Scuba Junkies were exceptionally good and although I could not dive with them I did not miss out on much. I was able to go on the dive boats with my husband each day and snorkel while he went diving. On the first day I had a guide to myself and on other days the numbers of snorkellers varied but I was always well looked after and in no way felt like the 2nd class citizen snorkellers sometimes are on dive boats.

The staff were all very attentive, helpful and friendly. The office staff made sure we went to as many different sites as possible which were suitable for both diving and snorkelling - not an easy feat. Indeed my husband dived 17 different sites over 18 dives and even then the repeat was a different profile.

Yes the accommodation at the backpackers is basic but there is not a lot of choice in Semporna. The standard of the diving sites, equipment and staff was first class and at the end of the day that is why we were there. If you don't like their accommodation you can easily book somewhere else. They do not force you to use theirs.

I would thoroughly recommend Scuba Junkies to divers and snorkellers alike. I have been diving all over the world and am delighted to say that the snorkelling with Scuba Junkies was among the best I have encountered anywhere. Although my husband was diving I saw almost as much as he did. I did not see the frog fish or the seahorses but apart from that I saw everything he did including sea snakes, ghost pipefish, cuttlefish etc. as well as the bigger jackss etc and multiudes of smaller fish.

Keep up the good work. P.S. I can dive again now my asthma is under control so we have booked to go back next year.

I did a day trip to Mabul with scuba junkies in August. I was really impressed with their service - good equipment, nice staff etc. all your equipment is assembled for you and taken off you once youre back in the boat - all you have to do is dive :) special thanks to dive master Monica, very patient, calm and friendly. Only thing I would criticise was the lunch, it was edible but not fantastic but for me, the most important thing was the diving and that was excellent!

Firstly, getting there to Semporna, we were overcharged for the airport shuttle fees. We were suppose to get the group rate as stated on the Scuba Junkie website and email but were asked to pay the individual rate by the driver. That was that so bad. On the last day, getting to the airport, the driver didn't come even though we paid and arranged for the airport shuttle with Scuba Junkie the day before. We were frantic. The guys at the lodge were still asleep. We waited for half hour before waking up one of them. No one came and nothing happened. The staff were very slack. We had to look for another transport ourselves. Finally, we stopped a private car charter which just dropped a customer and went for that instead.
Enough about the airport shuttle. The diving was terrible. I used to dive with them before a few years back and it was great. However, now they have really done it - worst diving experience ever! I'm going with another dive center next time I go there :)

A one-day trip to Sibuan Island was the highlight of our vacation in Borneo. We were a little concerned about joining a group of hardcore divers, as no-one in our family can scuba dive. Despite our worries, we were told in the office that Sibuan Island would be the best choice for us and it was indeed a memorable day and experience. We were able to snorkle with the help of one guy from the crew, who took us to the best spots along the reef. We had two dives in two different places before lunch on the beach. In the afternoon we just wanted to relax on the island and we agreed to be picked up later on. We had the whole beach for ourselves! If you want to spend some time on the island, just make sure you have plenty of sunscreen, water and a hat, as on the island there is VERY little shade, despite the palm trees.

The only thing that I didn't appreciate was the garbage left on the fantastic beach and along the shore by careless tourists. Also during the boat trip from Semporna we noticed a lot of floating trash, especially in the vicinity of the port, but the authorities in charge for the preservation of the environment (is this really a National Park?!?) are mainly interested in collecting your entrance fee.

Going back to Scuba Junkie, I just would like to add that the crew was fantastic and we really felt both welcome and well looked after. Thank you all folks!!
