“Swayambhu Mahalingam”
Reviewed June 6, 2013

After visiting various points at Mahabaleshwar , we returned to Kshetra ( old ) Mahabaleshwar to visit Mahabaleshwar temple built in the 16th century by Chandrarao More around the Swayambhu Mahalingam which is a big outrock surface of which was rough like a Rudraksh . Any time in the year , one can see at least 5 spots holding sacred water on this Mahalingam . It was told that these are the sources of Panchgangas namely , Krishna , Koyana , Venna , Savitri and Gayatri . Lord Shiv ( Kedarnath )carries Bhagirathi ( Ganga ) on his head at Kedarnath , whereas here Lord carries Panchgangas on his head . Therefore , he is known as Mahabaleshwar .

Number of shops selling Prasad , flowers , offerings , idols , images , wooden and plastic toys, etc were lined on both sides of the pathway leading to this and nearby Panchganga temple .
