I wish I had read more *real* reviews before I booked this resort. Now that I can't change that, I thought it would be a good idea to warn other travelers of the pro's and con's that go with staying at the MTDC Resort in Mahabaleshwar.

RESERVATION
The reservation process was really simple, I used the tourism website http://www.maharashtratourism.gov.in/ and booked a cottage room online and paid by Credit Card. They had rooms starting from Rs. 500 (off season tariff), but I chose the cottages which were at Rs. 1650 a night + taxes. If even after reading my review you decide to stay here, please take the Rs. 500 rooms as they're all the same in quality and only different in size.

LOCATION/GETTING THERE
The resort is located about 2 Kms from the main market and is quite well known. So travelling to and from there was not an issue. If you take a cab, you will be charged a minimum fare of Rs. 40. You could even walk down, but not advisable after dark as its in quite an isolated area - its almost like a jungle.

I must admit that the location had some appeal because it was kind of cut off and very green with lots of trees. A massive area, so if you were lazy, you could just walk around there. But then, that would appeal to you only if you like monkeys jumping on your roof or waiting for you at your door if you decide to walk out. Also, the place was full of bugs that make weird and creepy sounds all night. It would be a perfect location to shoot a horror movie actually.

THE ROOM (cottage and suite)
I wasn't expecting any 5 start kind of luxury from the room, but basic cleanliness is a must. Though the place was not dusty dirty, there was a yucky damp smell in the room - the kind that comes from a room that hasn't been opened forever. Since it was monsoon time, everything around just felt damp and not clean. The buckets and mugs in the bathroom were also quite sticky and dirty. Not to mention the phenyl smell and the continuous stench from the toilet at well. The blankets were smelly, the sheets/pillow covers were kind of white, and there were a lot of monsoon flies to sing you a lullaby at night.

We had to move to another room as the monkey were just too noisy in the cottage and there was absolutely no cell phone signal. Since all the cottages had the same problem, we downgraded to a suite room (without any cash return of course - these rooms were for Rs. 1200). I don't know why they charge less for this or rather more for the cottage as there was no difference. The cottage room doesn't have any private space and the size is about the same as the suite. But anyways, we had cell phone signal and the monkeys kept some distance!

FOOD/ROOM SERVICE

Can't complain much about the food, it was pretty decent. Ordered a couple of chicken dishes and some chapatis and they served it in neat foil packet. The food was warm and didn't taste too bad - the prices were also like any normal restaurant.

It was quite convenient to order over the phone and have the food delivered, they have a menu card placed in each room.

To summarize, I'd advice anyone to stay there only if you really want to rough it out and have a tight budget! Please don't spend 1600 bucks for this place, really not worth it. If you're spending 500bucks, then you can't ask for more.. so go for it. Just carry along a bed sheet, pillow covers, and lots of toilet paper!

We stayed in the MTDC, Mahabaleshwar in June '09, in 2 family rooms: (we were 2 couples) 13 & 14 (I think) for 3 nights.

There's very little good here, so let me get it over with first. The location is quite nice. It's around a 10 minute drive from the main market within a forest area. Lots of trees all around & you can walk in the huge compound itself. We saw a ton of birds, butterflies etc.

Now the bad: not sure where to begin. The rooms are simply horrible. It's not just that they're very old: they were dirty. The bedsheets were torn & dirty. The bathrooms ... yuck. They were not cleaned for ages. They were stinking & they were not cleaned from the previous guests. After requesting them to clean it & having to stand there while they did their job, i realized that all they did was that they dumped some phenyl in the loo instead of cleaning it.
Some big problem with the hot water: the moment you start taking a shower, the hot water just turns cold in a minute. The fan in the room makes such a racket that it's impossible to sleep. And the family rooms are right on the road (though it's a side road). So you get to choose whether you want to lose your sleep over the car noise or the fan noise (and then there are always monkeys dancing on the thoughtfully created tin roofs which act as amplifiers for the racket above. but then i won't complaint about animals ... after all there's probably little that the management could or should do about that)

The management here needs a few good lessons in cleanliness. There are big garbage cans placed every few meters all along the roads of the compound. These are never cleared ... and the monkeys remove the garbage & litter the entire area. So you feel as if you're in the middle of a huge garbage dump (it would be so easy to solve this if the management simply has some will to do so).

About the rooms, the hotel was fully occupied since we were there in the peak season. We wanted to upgrade to the newer cottage rooms (which were newly renovated & looked nicer. though the other cleanliness problems etc. would be common of course) but that was not possible (or the management did not want to accomodate us. they kept telling us to try every couple of hours to check if there's any availability. strange. either they would have availability or they wouldn't). And they would obviously know this in advance. They were extremely unfriendly & uncooperative at the reception.

We were also stuck here since there was no availability in any other hotel in Mahabaleshwar though we tried in around 6-7 other hotels, being peak season & a weekend.

I've stayed in a few other MTDC properties in the past: I think this was the worst managed property of theirs that i've stayed in ... most other places are atleast clean & the management, though not too hospitable, are atleast not comletely unfriendly.

And it was by far the dirtiest MTDC i have stayed in. I won't recommend anyone to go here ...
