“Don't miss it!”

This place is really worth a visit. Rooms are clean, well equiped and beautifully designed. The bar and the restaurant are very nicely placed and you have a fantastic panorama view of the sea and the beach. If you're lucky you might even get the company of a couple of monkeys that frequently stops by. I had some of the most interesting and delicious meals and I just can't give enough credit to the chef - he is a magician. All the staff are very kind, helpful and well trained to do their job. So if you are to go to the eastcoast of Zanzibar, this place is a must. I'll be back for sure!

As a tour operator, I am vary aware of what standards should be, so when my wife and I decided to break away to Zanzibar for our honeymoon, we decided on Red Monkey simply because the communication we had with management set them apart from similar choices we considered. At no stage during the booking process did we mention this was our honeymoon, nor that we are tour operators ourselves. Upon arrival at 5am in the morning, Mark was present, opened up and got us settled in. The cleanliness and professionalism we experienced during our stay was of the highest standard, the location unmatched and the experience simply wonderful.

We stayed at Red Monkey Lodge for 3 nights and we absolutely loved it. The cottage had amazing views of the clear blue ocean and we slept with the sound of the ocean. The cottage was beautiful, and we very much enjoyed just chilling by the bar/ restaurant. Def way better than the next door hotel with booming music (not loud enough to disturb us). It was very nice to see the lodge open its doors to the local villagers; in fact it was quite entertaining to see young boys playing football (and celebrating the occasional goal in style!). Mark the owner was ever helpful and even arranged for our stay at our next destination in Mombasa. Thanks Mark, we'd definitely return to Red Monkey when we're next in Zanzibar!

We had been a bit worried before going to Zanzibar to end up in beach lodges that are like prison-resorts with a high wall and a gate, and with little respect to the local community, but Red Monkey Beach Lodge showed us that it is possible to go to the beach in Zanzibar as a tourist, but feel good about it. The lodge isn't closed off from the village (people pass through to go to the beach), and almost all the staf working there come from the village. The manager also advised guests to go for a walk in the village, and not just staying in the resort and on the beach as many do; but also advised guests to dress appropriately.
The lodge itself is simple but beautiful, and right on the beach. I loved the rooms, the colours, the simplicity. The flowers on the bed every morning. And the small pool with water at the doorstep to get the sand of your feet, because you just walk around barefoot all the time. The housekeeping ladies also did a great job.
The restaurant prepared nice food with locally available ingredients, which you could enjoy just next to the beach with a glass of wine. Once a week there is a kind of reception with free snacks when people from the village are also invited; I think that is a nice initiative.
We ended up staying longer than planned, because it was just so beautiful and relaxing. The staff was very, very friendly, and also the other guests were all very nice, creating a nice atmosphere.
The beach itself is beautiful. There is quite a big difference between high and low tide, but that gives you the opportunity to make long intertidal walks, enjoying the colours of the beach and the sea, spotting fish in the small pools of water, and watching local women harvest their seaweed.
We also did some snorkeling there; we went with a dhow (local sailing boat) to a small stretch of coral reef, and really enjoyed it.

we haven't stayed to sleep, only came by for the coffee and wifi.
Can't really recommend the food, we had octopus and a beef sandwich that were 10-11K shiling and not really worth the money. they coffee is good, the view is great, relaxed atmosphere and WIFI.
