“Value for money in an expensive area”
Reviewed April 22, 2013

Spent a lovely week at Coral Rock, enjyoing the peace and quiet and sublime views. Staff were friendly and the private bungalows are lovely. The hotel has an enviable location on a rock cliff, which affords incredible views of the ocean and the changing tides. Local villagers can be seen harvesting seaweed. It's away from the hustle and bustle of Paje, but an easy taxi trip into town.Breakfast is delicious and often included in the price. Other meals are a bit overpriced, but again this is typical for the area. Best to walk down the beach a bit to local beach huts for a more authentic meal. The east coast of Zanzibar is very overpriced, but CR provides good value for money.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Coral Rock in summer 2012 and had an absolutely fantastic time. The room was lovely with a private balcony and fantastic views. As noted by other reviewers, the service in the restaurant was a little slow however they were up front about it and it allows you to enjoy the views/atmosphere/company. They have created a very relaxed environment and when we wanted to do some activities those offered through Coral Rock were very good (the Dolphin trip, Stone Town and forest excursions were particular highlights).
Prior to the trip we did read some of the reviews which were more negative however the owner's swift and consistent responses gave us confidence and we were not let down - our time at Coral Rock was a very happy and memorable experience. After returning and our families seeing the pictures they now want to go too, the views and beach are really right out of a postcard!
Thank you to the owners and the staff for making us feel so welcome. We had a very happy holiday.

There is no beach. Our room was full of cockroaches. It's much more expensive than any of the other hotels along that stretch of the coast (which all do have beaches). $170 vanished from our safe and when we asked them to look into it, we were simply told, "Our staff are beyond reproach". While the staff were friendly, the owners were incredibly aggressive - to the point of being quite threatening when we asked them to turn the music down late at night. Not a positive experience.

Please note that in the past 8 years we have only ever had to have 4 different booked room guests to leave the hotel before the end of their stay. This was one of those. After being kicked out, only then did they claim that money was missing from their safe and it was during a period when no staff had access to their rooms. This was a highly disgruntled pair of individuals that had originally booked as a double then demanded a twin when checking in (generally the sign of a fighting couple). No beach? There are literally hundreds of photos taken by other guests and shown on this very site. Coral Rock can only give validity to a single claim in this review in that we were hostile to these people and this was only when after we asked them to leave and they tried to claim they were robbed by our staff. This couple has been blacklisted by the hotel.

The place is OK, and definitely has a relaxing atmosphere with hammocks and sunbeds spread out on the place. Others here have rated and described facilities in more detail, but I would like to add one important piece of information about the restaurant:

As others have noted, the food is delicious but it takes time for it to be served! If you are a family of 4-5 people, expect to wait 45-60 minutes after you order. This can be quite annoying if you are hungry, just arrived and expect maybe a 10-15 minute wait.

However it's not really a problem once you know about it. Just place your order, go and do something else, pick up the kids (if you have any) from the pool after 30 minutes and go down and find a table. And a tip for the manager: Tell your guests at arrival about the time it takes to prepare food instead of having them find out about it the hard way.

We planned to stay 4 nights, but left already after 2 nights. We paid quiet a lot of money for a bad service. During dinner one of the employees did try to sell all kind of excursions, even after we told him we didn't appreciate. Finally the employee asked to use our laptop for skyping with his friends... When we asked for the bill, someone told us we were only allowed to pay by the end of our stay, otherwise she had to make several bookings. The next morning we were suprised again: breakfast was included, but they still gave a menu to order breakfast. After telling the breakfast should be included the employee mentioned a table with some yoghurt, fruit and drinks. We asked for some toast, we got 2 small pieces. So we asked for some more toast...the answer was "You have to pay for it!" Later on that day there were many flying ants in the room, so we asked the employees if it was possible to fix the problem. The first person answered that he should have a look the next day, the second person answered "Sorry, it is still Africa...". After getting angry they finally fixed the problem.
We did complain to the manager, she was quiet amazed about our experiences: it was not the way she likes guests to be treated and did apologize.

After all this incidents we were very happy to leave!

One positive experience: they have a very good cook! The food was delicious!!

Dear guest, I'm going to agree with you on this one. If I received this kind of service I would have reacted the same way. The only thing I can do here as the owner of the business is apologize to you and assure you that these incidents have never really come up before and thanks to your feedback most certainly never will again (at least not without consequences to the staff concerned). We've had a meeting about your experience specifically and the staff are well aware of the mistakes made. The guest relations manager that suggested you rather pay at the end is no longer with us and the new manager has been briefed on the incident. The tour operator that works out of Coral Rock has been issued with a a written warning not to bother guests whilst eating and no staff will ever ask to use any guest's personal property for any reason. Breakfast is complimentary to all guests unless otherwise stated. There is a self service table with cereals, hot and cold beverages, fruits etc for guests AND there is also a hot breakfast a la cart selection (from a menu). It does say on the menu that a la carte breakfast is included for guests, I think you may have missed this, so we've reprinted it in bold. The reason there are prices on there is that we have outside visitors (non-guests ) that sometimes come for breakfast and they are charged accordingly. We do have some limits in place to ensure that the complimentary breakfast is not abused as we've had some chancers in this regard before, this call is now up to the manager and not the waiters to decide whether requests for more items are reasonable or not. Certainly requests for more toast and other such items will not be charged for or even asked. We do provide insect spray for guests and you can ask anytime to have your room sprayed. We fumigate professionally 4 times a year, that's double the recommended frequency. Staff have been warned that any failure to comply or comment on a guests requests without consulting management first may face dismissal. Again I thank you for your feedback and apologize for your experience

We live and work on the island (north Zanzibar) and needed a little relaxing break... Coral Rock turned out to be the perfect place for just that. The food was absolutely incredible, the best we've eaten on the island ('real' chicken!), the place itself has a relaxing air about it, it's quite charming with a lovely layout for the restaurant, plenty of sunbeds and a hammok for two, and our room was very nice (with perfectly quite and working air conditioning). A big plus is of course the pool which was clean and cool, perfect, especially when the tide is out. Staff was extremely friendly and attentive. We will be back!

The facilities of the hotel are quite nice: pool, rooms, and restaurant. We stayed in the cottage 12 with a nice private patio outside with benches, sun loungers, hammocks and a nice view of the ocean and dawn. One of the big issues in some African countries is power and during our stay in Zanzibar we had several long power shortages in other hotels. However at the Coral Rock within seconds, the generator system began supplying electricity.

Breakfast was good with a variety of cereals, eggs, pancakes, hot drinks and even sashimi. However, we got only pineapple and bananas every day, in spite of the variety of fruits they have in Jambiani,
The only issue was that in the bathroom during the first day we found a lot of cockroaches, despite the insecticide we spread out. Fortunately, they solve the problem the next day and cover with cement the possible holes where they might have been entering.

By the way, it was a bit difficult to find a website of the hotel and contacts to make the reservation. We sent a message through a site in Facebook, so we could contact them and got the booking.

Room Tip: Choose any cottage with sea view, they are beautiful and private.
