“Balance your wishes with your budget”
Reviewed February 25, 2014

My wife and I stayed here for four weeks in January and February 2014.

Strengths:
• Fantastic position directly on the beach, but just some meters away from the maximum high tide that allows the structure to avoid the risk of being flooded by exceptionally high tides, which frequently happen (such a risk is taken by the 90 % of the other facilities of the place) .
• Perhaps the most beautiful garden in Jambiani .
• Kindness, helpfulness , friendliness and honesty of relationship and behavior on behalf of all staff, from Marlies , the owner, with her two partners, the chef and all the others.
• Cleanliness , accurately organized daily . We are 6 ° south of the equator: who does not want the ants entering the room at all, he has two choices : a) to choose a multi-storey hotel ( we know wonderful ones in Manhattan ), b) to buy an anteater (you can rent it at the nearby Josani Forest) .
• Quality of the kitchen. The cook is still not very expert in molecular cuisine (he will soon make a course chez Adrià in Barcelona) , but he can serve, at your request , fresh fish, crabs, octopus , squid, chicken in at least two ways , raw vegetables or cooked vegetables , prepared according to various local recipes as well as soups, pasta that ( since I am Italian ) I was very careful not to try, and how and how much fruit as you want, really fantastic .
• Drinks are controversial , in the sense that I (Italian) judged that was truly insane the appetite for South African wines demonstrated by the Bavarians , who, in turn, judged abominable my liking for Tanzanian beers ; however, at the end, we were both happy .
• The support given by the boss Tutu for the trips to and from the airport and in taking you to notable places of the island.
• Peace all the day , which allows an equally relaxing .

Weaknesses:
• The hotel has no air conditioning, but only fans : if you provide a good ventilation by helding opposite windows open in the night, you dug comfortably .
• The structure is not equipped with autonomous generator of current : this can be a major drawback when the public supply of electricity is interrupted (and this happens frequently, even for long times ) .
• Do not always the water supply is regular. We didn’t understand the reason ... but if you require firmly , the staff immediately restore the service.
• The bar ( let's call it ) near the beach is not , actually , a very pleasant place , due to the quality of the abituées : but it is far enough and it isn’t compulsory to stay there.

Conclusions:
• Each true traveler is accustomed to balance what he wants (and what he doesn’t want) with its budget. Normally the prices of the facilities of decent practice in Jambiani range from 1.5 to 2.5 times the prices of Marlies : many of these do not have the weaknesses of Marlies , but not all of them have her strong points.

I had booked to stay at this hotel for 4 nights.I made some advance payment but interestingly had to wire the money to Germany to Marlies account. We arrived at the gate and i confused with a cattle shed.Driving inside there was no evedence anybody had been there. The rooms were filthy and the worst is my children and my wife could not take it.It was 29th of Dec and all other hotels were full. There is no water in the rooms and the few staff would just provide us with water when they felt like.I never slept since i had to stay awake guarding my family as there is no guard.Termites were all over and there si no airfan or an airconditioner.
Luckly on the third night we secured accomodation at the neighbouring Visitors In hotel which gave us a wonderful experience.Marlies completely ruined my holiday and i cannot forgive her for that. One of the workers told me she goes there for a few days once in a year. This year she will be there in Febraury.I cannot recomend it even for a quarter price unless one just wants to suffer.
The compound is full of drunken local beach boys and fish mongers and local prostitutes following them.It was just horrible and can only befit a local dirty pub.

I'm very confused by these previous reviews that convinced us to book this hotel. Apart from the hospitable driver that picked us up the place was dreadful. Our room had stained curtains, stained ceilings, cockroaches in the bathroom, ants all over the bedroom floor, no lock for the safe, the window shutters didn't close properly, cold showers, holes in the mosquito net and a rodent running from the restaurant.
We gave it two nights which was more than generous and then left to the beautiful Casa Del Mar next door, which is somehow a comparable price in June!!! We gave the manager a list of all our complaints so hopefully Marlies (the German owner who wasn't even at the hotel) makes an effort to offer travelers a decent experience. At present it feels as if she's not spent much at all on re-opening the hotel and trying to take advantage of guests who come from afar.
I don't like to be so negative but it's only fair that people spending a lot of money to get to Zanzibar know what they are getting with this hotel.

Luxury hotel : pay and enjoy your breakfast. One of a kind place : enjoy the conversation. The stories. And every moment of it. 25 years ago, a young German woman from Hanover was the first European to open a hotel, six bungalows rather, in Jambiani on Zanzibar East coast. "Malice" aka Marlies Lehmann, is still alive and kicking today. She doesn't read newspapers, full of disasters, smokes Embassy cigarettes, has short silver hair, swims every day, loves her guests as much as she enjoys being on her own, had love stories but never married. She hires a happy staff of 10 and her manager, Alkhan, who has been here from the start, sits at a huge minister desk in the evening, caring about his boss as his own shadow. Or vice versa. As if each of them were a secret and precious box. Malice does not speak swahili but he might teach you some most useful - and fun - Zanzibari proverbs. Soft prices, sparkling bungalows, dazzling beach, generous food - fried cassava with coconut milk : Malice's favourite. Many guests keep coming for longer stays. Another option for an evening meal : a tiny restaurant called Peace of Mind, 3 bananas trees in the yard and Ali's inventive cooking from his own shamba (field).

Jambiani beach Hotel is a neat pin. The staff is supportive and mostly warm. We had our own custom breakfast that wasn't in their menu since they are BB hotel.

The rooms are spacious something you would need when in a beach environment, you wouldnt want sand all over your resting sanctuary.

If there is a place to be in that region Jambiani will offer it to you at least for the High peak season we found it affordable at $60
