Lydenrust Guest Farm
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 16, 2013

I just spent a month at the Lydenrust Guest Farm and had the best experience of my life. I can't wait to go back. It is a real treasure hidden in the valley in Mpumalanga. It is a beautiful farm teeming with all kinds of animals, most of them rescued. Baby goats and lambs were being born constantly. Ali, who runs the farm, tenderly cares for all the horses, goats, sheep, chickens, dogs, cats, the Reebok, pig, cow, peacocks, pidgeons and roosters, who all roam the farm and are all very friendly. The accomodations are wonderful and clean, and while they are private, there is a fantastic outdoor deck where you can play pool and BBQ and pop a cd in the boom box, and an outdoor fire pit for evening relaxation under the millions of stars... If you need anything, Ali, who owns the farm and is one of the friendliest and nicest women I've ever met, is too happy to help and get it. The trail rides are wonderful, and the horses friendly and easy to ride, and all with varying personalities, so your riding can be at any level-beginner to advanced... Ali also runs a school on her property, dependent on donations and volunteers, for local preschool Zulu children, which is desperately needed in the area. Her school is incredibly inspiring and the children are all amazing and so grateful, so if you stay here it is also going to a wonderful cause; the best of both worlds. I clearly can't recommend staying here enough. And if you do, pack some candy or educational books or clothes for the kids and meet them! It will add to your vacation! I went alone, but the accommodations can be for anyone: a romantic time for a couple, or a huge family get together.

Room Tip: It depends on how many of you there are-the guest cottages come in different sizes. All are private.

I just completed 7 weeks as a volunteering at Lydenrust Guest Farm, helping on the farm and at the Preschool Ali runs out of a converted shipping container.
This place was a real treasure to find.
Whilst there, there were several guest staying in the lodges and the attention and service that Ali provides is exceptional. Ali is very passionate about her farm and provides the best care for all the animals. Ali ensures that everyone staying there, has the most wonderful experience, be it riding the horses, interacting with the large variety of animals, or just sitting by the river relaxing and getting away from it all for a day or two.
Highly recommend and will definitely be returning

We stayed over for one night (only) after spending the day in Dullstroom. The accommodation and amenities are basic but clean. Around the farmhouse are many tame animals (a bull, a pig, a buck, goats, cats, chickens, horses) which is a pleasure to see and interact with. Alison (the owner) loves the animals and it is evident that she takes very good care of them.

If you can, go for a horse ride - well worth it.

The paved road in getting there is in bad shape. Potholes everywhere. Drive slowly (60-70) if you don't want to replace your rims and/or tyres! As at 30/6/13.

Well worth the effort.

I spent 12 weeks volunteering here and had the best time of my life. If you need to get away to find some peace and quite and inspiration, this is the place to go. Ali is an amazing host with a wonderful crew of staff and animals. The setting is at the base of some beautiful mountains and close to a large dam. There is horse riding into the mountains on offer and daily interaction with the mixture of free ranging farm animals that she has. Total peace and tranquility that will reset your frazzled mind and nerves.

I highly recommend visiting and you will never want to leave!

My time at Lydenrust was truly the most wonderful experience.

The accommodation (Stone Cottage) was clean and comfortable with all amenities we needed. The farm had plenty to see and do and each animal has their own story, which makes the experience even more memorable and personal.

Ali is a wonderful host and incredibly caring and compassionate. The horses and animals are all friendly and very very happy. Horse trails were well catered for for all abilities and brilliant fun.

The Rural Farm is also a very, very special place and certainly made an impact on me.

I will most definitely be going back there upon my next return to South Africa and would definitely stay a little longer!

Thank you Ali and your team (including animals!) who made the experience truly magical!

Room Tip: Stone Cottage is lovely.

the guest farm is the best place I ever been, the accomodation is very clean, pretty and peacefull with lots of activities to do and things to see. The horse trails are amazing, imagine yourself riding in african bush with the most amazing views from the mountains! The owner, Alison, is the most helpfull host who will do everything to make your stay very comfortable. It's the personal touch from the staff and owner wich makes this place worth visiting. The location of the guest farm is also very central to make trips to Kruger, The panorama route and nelspruit for example. I can't wait for my next visit, feels like a home far away from home!
