My wife and I visited the Lodge in June 2014 as part of our honeymoon trip. Immediately upon arrival we felt very welcome and it didn’t take long to settle into the hotel environment and immediately felt extremely comfortable in the space. The staff at the hotel were all very friendly and helpful at every turn. RJ (manager at the time) did an excellent job in ensuring we always had everything we needed. The food and wine was always excellent. We would also highly recommend a talk/tour of the battlefields by Mr Gerrard. Very Insightful.
The hotel itself is set in an amazing location on the cliff tops which offers tremendous views and a real feeling of peace. The main deck of the hotel shares the same views as the bedrooms on the deck below. We were in room No. 1. A round room beautifully decorated in a typically rustic South African feel. We were originally only supposed to stay 3 nights…..but it was so good we didn’t want to leave and booked an extra night. I’d go back tomorrow if I could. Excellent!!

Our company corporate function was held at the lodge and the relaxed atmosphere, with panoramic views of the battlefields, set the tone for a great weekend. Food was excellent and friendly staff made us feel very welcome. Battlefield tours by Rob were a highlight!

We stayed here for 2 nights, our room number 1 was lovely, very cosy and with superb views over the battlefield.
Lovely fire in the bar every evening and the food was excellent and served with a smile, 3 meals a day was really too many calories for us but who could resist?
We did the battlefield tours of both Isandlwana and Rorkes drift with Rob Gerrard who was amazing, he really enables you to relive the situation and paints the scene for you so well, we were very fortunate to have him as a guide.
Do chose this lodge if you are planning to visit this part of KZN.

Room Tip: All rooms look out over the battlefield, 1 and 12 are slightly bigger.

What an amazing setting.....the view over the Battlefield is awe inspiring. The lodge nestles into the surrounding as if it had been there forever........our room 12 was was exceedingly comfortable - with necessary hot water bottles at night. Superb bathroom. The views were stunning and lying in bed a beautiful panorama was spread out in the valley below. Food was really good and tasty. Staff excellent and helpful. Excellent place to stay for the Battlefield or just to get away from it all.

Room Tip: Our room was at the end ....the bathroom was a semi circle with a vaulted room! Views amazing.

This is a remarkable property in a beautiful, remote and almost eerie part of the world.

The lodge is awesome - from its location above the battlefield and valley, overlooking the small village below - its design, its comfort and restaurant, its wonderful deck overlooking the scene.

The food is terrific - the ambiance - the small community of guests all sharing an interest in the history and the experience.

This is not a place you pass by but rather it is a destination hotel... and very much worth the effort. It is a 5 hour drive from Johannesburg...

The history - the resident guide Rob - is a cross between oral historian and an actor in a great moment from history 100 years ago. He creates a scene... then he continues to mix both the English narrative with Zulu history... weaving a tale of epic proportions. He was almost in a trance as he brought out the vivid details of the battles and bravery on both sides.
His trip to the battlefield and to Rourke's Drift are not to be missed.

A walk into the village with the local guide is also worth a morning's experience.

We were there for 2 full days - and that was plenty to enjoy the experience and tours.

The lodge was wonderful and the view outstanding. Staff very helpful and polite. We stayed in room 1 which had a two sided veranda which proved to be a sun trap which was great and the view magnificent. The room was clean, comfortable and a shower to die for. The food was plentiful and of a good standard.
Rob who is based at the lodge was just fantastic. What he doesn't know about the history of the battles involving the Zulu nation, is not worth knowing. His passion for this and the way he tells you the facts are just totally gripping, as if you are there.
A holiday memory we will never forget. Thank you so much.
