“Stunning location but take warm clothes in winter”
Reviewed October 19, 2013

We stayed at Isandlwana Lodge for two nights in August. We were unlucky with the weather - it was cold and wet. The hotel is understandably not designed with this weather in mind and it was quite chilly - electric radiators were supplied for the bedrooms which were certainly needed (although the heat didn't reach the bathrooms). We went to Rorke's Drift with tour guide Rob in the morning and it was an amazing historical experience. We got very cold and wet however and my daughter and I decided not to go with my husband on the Isandlwana tour that afternoon but instead to spend a pleasant afternoon reading (there's a nice library of books for guests) in front of the fire. The food was good and the rooms were smartly furnished and very clean.

The fields of the battle of Isandwana situate a beautiful Lodge that was well thought of during the designing phase.
During our visit to the battlefields my guests and I spent the night at Isandlwana Lodge and the place is unbelievably beautiful, with cave like corridors, the lodge overlooking the field of the Anglo Zulu war and the service was great.
On your next visit to Battlefields make sure to experience this beautiful place. Highly recommended.

We have just returned from 3 weeks in South Africa, and our 2 night stay at the Isandlwana lodge far out weighed all the other experiences, it was indeed a one off life times experience.
Firstly the views! To die for. Our bedroom looked out over the vast veld. Secondly such amazing service. The manager Mike gave me one to one knowledge of the Flora and Fauna and was passionate about bird life, like myself. Rob the Battlefields historian made my husbands tour one he will never forget.
As for the cuisine, it was of a vey high standard, and utterly delicious.
Thank you SO much for such a wonderful experience.

We stayed for two nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Firstly, what a location!! and the architecture - I just loved it all. Spectacular view from the room overlooking Isandlwanna. The staff were extremely friendly and the owner was simply charming! Food was delicious and the bar well stocked. If the staff offer you their chilli sherry to try in your soup, try it!! I was a little skeptical at first but it added such a burst of flavour.

Unfortunately Rob Gerrard wasn't well enough to take us on our tour of Isandlwana and the battle of Rorke’s Drift - hugely disappointing for my father who loves his military history. However a local guide took his place who was very good and naturally extremely knowledgeable! It was fascinating to have the events described from a local's perspective and to be able to visualise the events in front of your eyes.

stayed for two nights. The hotel is stunning to see and the interior is fabulous. We had room 1 which gave us a long balcony to catch the sun and the views of the surrounding area were fantastic. The room was clean, as was the stunning bathroom with a shower cubicle as big as some bathrooms I have seen. There was tea and coffee in the room as well as a cookie jar and a plate of fruit. Found a U.K. socket as well.
Hotel has a swimming pool, library, media room and bar with a log burning fire to cosy up to.
On the first morning Robs talk on the battle was very emotional starting on the balcony then a few minutes drive to the battlefield to continue the story.
In the afternoon we were taken down into the Zulu village by our bar-keeping friend Seyabonga.
Again very informative, lasts about 3 hours. ( walking)
Mike the boss was always helpful and pleasant to chat to.
Food was excellent and plentiful.
If you are visiting the battle sites of Africa then give this hotel a look.

Stayed at Isandlwana Lodge last weekend and it was everything I dreamed it would be. Another couple that came with us was just as enthralled with the accommodations as well as the superb educational tours of Isandlwana battlefield, Rourke's Drift, and Fugitives Drift. Rob was amazing with his knowledge and passion for these major events of the Zulu wars. The Lodge is described as a five star and when you consider where it is and how it was constructed it is so much more. The food is gourmet, the bar well appointed, the rooms elegant and comfortable with spectacular views of the battlefield at Isandlwana. My stay here was all too brief.

We stayed at Isandlwana Lodge a few weeks ago while experiencing an amazing tour of the battlefields. The lodge was absolutely beautiful, the rooms were extremely clean and authentically African... before bed our beds were pulled down and hot water bottles were placed inside, so once we'd returned from dinner it was all warm ans cozy for us to go back to. The food was delicious and ALL the staff were so welcoming, friendly and helpful. It really felt homely and comfortable with the many log fires and breathtaking views. We have stayed in many lodges across South Africa and this was definitely one of our favorite! I hope one day we will return and enjoy another fabulous stay! In my opinion it was a five star Lodge with five star service!

Thank you Isandlwana Lodge, miss you!
