The Goat Bar is the home of the Mountain Goat Brewery. They produce a range of organic beer that is very tasty. The bar is tucked away in a quiet corner of Richmond and you could easily drive past it without ever knowing it is there - talk about a hidden gem!
The bar is only open on Wednesday's and Friday's from 5pm - they have to make all the beer there, so they are kept pretty busy with the important business and don't have too much spare time to run the bar! On Wednesdays there is a free tour of the brewery, which starts at 6:30pm and runs anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour.
The bar itself is located in a large red brick warehouse building. The entrance of North Street opens to a large open bar area, with assorted table and chairs and couches. On the south side of the bar area is the brewery itself, providing a roomy atmosphere and a slightly different back-drop to a night out - just be prepared for the strong smells when you walk in the door, because the bar is literally in the brewery. The building is quite cold in winter, so I would recommend getting there early to snag a spot under one of the portable heaters that are set up around the room!
To complement a full range of Mountain Goat beers, wine and champagne is available, and to make a meal of it they make really nice pizza's here - just be aware that they usually sell out by around 6:30pm. Even if you are not a drinker, I would recommend this place just for the pizzas.
I saw lots of bicycles being brought inside - as they say on their website, they are very "bike-friendly" and you can just lean your bike up against a wall inside the bar to keep it safe. Also, I noticed there were some kids running around - it's a pretty good spot to bring the family - the large size means they have a bit of room to run around.
So great beer, awesome pizzas, a unique and nice atmosphere and a free brewery tour - pretty good I say!
