“Great hotel!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 4, 2013 via mobile

Really happy with our stay here. We stayed for 3 nights in our own little cabin called Fragata, really nice, clean and quiet. We then decided to stay an extra night and were moved to another apartment, this was bigger but nowhere near as nice as the cabin we had been staying in. It was called Colibri and was quite noisy as there were two apartments above and you could hear everything, like no kidding, a pin drop! The hotel grounds were lovely, great gardens. the staff were very quiet, not the happiest of people. Unlike the Puerto Lopez locals. Lovely helpful people. Really nice town.

Interesting hysteria with a garden setting across a dirt road from the beach. Well known, popular place with a very good restaurant. Would recommend making reservations ahead of time. The owner operators are very friendly and accodating.

Room Tip: Only saw one room. All appear to be similar.

I came across this place while walking on the beach just before I had to leave, I had stayed at a super cheap hotel and hadn't come this far down the beach yet. It looked really inviting so I went up the ramp from the beach (perfect for wheel chairs- in fact the whole place is wheelchair friendly) and saw the owner sitting on the terrace, I just asked if I could look around because it looked so colourful. He said sure and took me on a 10 minute tour, the place is so lovely with the tropical garden and huts, muscial instruments, hand carved wooden furniture, lovely dogs and kind owners. I had so time to kill and was about to order a beer, but they said it was their policy only to serve hotel clients (so they could dedicate their time to guests instead of passersby), I understood and had beer somewhere else but I would love to go back as a guest.

Puerto Lopez isn't much but the Hosteria Mandala is a little bit of a tropical paradise. The owners were great and obviously multi-talented as he designed and built the very cool wood chairs you sit in, he built frames for mirrors, and the mounts for the reading lights over the beds. The breakfast was outstanding with a fresh fruit salad, freshly squeezed orange juice, your choice of eggs, slices of freshly made bread, and real coffee. The dinner menu featured fresh local seafood as well as the usual chicken and beef. Everything we tried was very well prepared, obviously fresh, and tasted great. The wine list was limited but consisted of some excellent Chilean and Argentine selections.
We made last minute reservations there and at the same time requested they set up a trip to Isla de la Plata for us and when we finally got to the Mandala, everything was set up and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Yes they have some large dogs that were very friendly but they didn't seem to bark at all. We stayed in the Pulpo cottage which is next to the new units that are under construction but work didn't start until 0900 by which time we were long gone. The gardens around the place are incredible and attract some amazing hummingbirds.
It's an easy walk to town which is fun to walk through and on a Saturday there is quite a bit of activity on the beach in addition to the usual unloading of the days catch from the fishing boats. All in all, an incredible place that we thoroughly enjoyed.

Room Tip: IMHO there are no bad rooms.

We checked in and then left the next day and checked into the Mantaraya Lodge which we absolutely loved. This appears to be a year after year favorite of many people like an extended family We had Orcas, which was right off the kitchen. Besides the ongoing construction banging all day, at night we had the noise from the restaurant at night. The large dogs were gorgeous and one of the things about the place I liked the most. The room was fine with a nice deck -- but if I'm by the ocean I want to see the ocean not water. What struck me was the construction stuff piled in the dining area - I'm not sure a new hotel trying to get clientele would be this sloppy. It shows much better at night so if you want the best first impression, arrive then! The place is offbeat and funky but compared with the rooms and view at Mantarya it fell way short.

Room Tip: Not Orcas!!!

Hostaria Mandala is a place you won't forget! We spent here a week in 2007 and we wanted absolutely to come back! This place is a tropical garden located just in front of the beach (really few meters) of Puerto Lopez. Bungalows, wide and clean, are surrounded by flower and plants, the atmosphere is quiet and peaceful. You can simply rest on yor hammock seeing humming birds flying around and iguanas sunbathing on the trees. All the staff is very friendly and helpfull, for everything you need, just ask, they'll do their best and more to satisfy you. The owners, Maya and Aurelio are two beautiful persons, always smily and gentle. That is not part of the job, simply they are happy people. By the way, most of the furniture of the structure is handcrafted by Aurelio. Great job!
In the main building, under a beautiful veranda you can have all your meals, and the quality is a top one. You can choose regional manabi cooking or italian cooking and everything is excellent.
Need to say few words on the previous review entitled "ick": cars do not pass near the propertyat all hours, expecially night time, simply because it's located at the end of a street. And the five beautifull dogs spend most of their time sleeping, seldom they bark. They simply take care of you and your safety, they are part of the staff! No cockroaches in the rooms, they are clean and comfortable.

We traveled as a family and had a terrible trip from start to finish. The owner was snobbish and at times downright rude. My small kids were awakened each night by the owners' five large and loud dogs who barked at every car that drove past at all hours of the night. (The girls' desperate attempts at naps were also disturbed daily by the loud construction happening about 10 meters from our cabin, which the owner said they could do nothing about). I also mentioned the dog issue to the owner who simply shrugged. Making matters worse was that the cabins were completely unprotected from outside noise because of the screens in place of windows. The staff at Mandala were unfriendly and seemed tense, perhaps because of their domineering employer. On our last day we were about 15 minutes late checking out, and the assistant at the desk told me rudely that we needed to "please leave now; they need to clean". Which, by the way, is a joke--the rooms were filthy. And we killed at least 5 cockroaches and countless spiders.

Aside from the hostel nightmare, Puerto Lopez is nothing to write home about. It's a depressing, dirty fishing town with nothing special to offer. We did not go in whale-watching season.

Long story short, this was not a very relaxing vacation. We live in Quito and have had many fabulous experiences in hostels and haciendas throughout Ecuador, but this place is a mess. The owners and staff did not at all make us feel welcome. We wanted to leave after one night but they refused to refund our prepayment.
