“An oasis after a long trip”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 10, 2011

I showed up late after a long day on the bus from the highlands and just got in the last room (so maybe advanced booking is a good idea). They managed to get some food together for me although the kitchen was closed (greatly appreciated). Nice beach right in front of the hostel. Food was decent although I ate in the town mostly, just for more local ambiance than you get at the restaurant in the hosteria. My room was a little cave like but the premises are all in a beautiful garden setting. I was actually here in March of 2010, but I guess I waited too long to join TA because it won't let me date my review that far back. Oh well.

The location, the hotel and the rooms are simply great. We really loved it there. It is directly at the beach all placed in a huge and opulent garden. Fantastic. The food in the restaurant is good although we had better dinner in the village of Puerto Lopez. The living room for guests upstairs is very comfortable so that you can also just hang around or read. There are just two little downsides: the wifi connection is not really fast and the service staff is not extremely friendly. But apart from that we really loved it and we would recommend the place to everybody and we would come back whenever we are back in Ecuador some day. The value for money is absolutely top!

Mandala was a pleasure to stay at. The staff is terrific and always making sure your stay is wonderful. The gardens are such a pleasure and the rooms were always clean.

Room Tip: There is no A/C, just open air and a breeze off the ocean.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time with Aurelio and Maja, who made our short 4 day stay a time of relaxation and enjoyment. They were often present, asking how things were going and taking a genuine interest in us. The rest of the staff was also very good.
Across the street was the nice beach, where we spent many hours each day, no not swimming, but walking, beachcombing and sitting. The sand was very nice, although the beach has its share of human pollution - washed up plastic coke bottles and styrofoam containters as examples.
The food was superb, the menu varied and the prices reasonable. There were several tables outside that permitted us to enjoy the breeze.
Our cabin was clean, although because it was in the middle of a nice garden, we did find a couple of critters in our room.
We came well prepared with malaria pills and mosquito repellent, but did not see a one. We were told that this was unusual for the time of the year
The weather was overcast the entire 4 days, with misty rain falling from time to time. If you are coming at this time of the year for sun and surf, forget the first. But for us, it was perfect, the conditions did not hinder us doing what we wanted .
For light sleepers like us, the roosters and wild dogs were a little irksome, but that is part of the experience of coming to Ecuador.
If you are allergic to animals, be aware that there are four monster dogs and two cats roaming about. They are part of the charm of the place.
They have a wonderful selection of games, a book exchange, cactus garden, internet access and Aurelio's art (and Maja's arrangement) is evident everywhere.
And last but not least, there is an obvious concern with the environment and especially whales.

Room Tip: Don't show up and expect to find a cabin. You need to make a reservation.

Loved the laid back vibe of Hosteria Mandala. Accommodation is in cute individual cabins with very comfortable beds and great hot showers. Food was fresh and very good. Lots of vegetarian options, including past dishes. Do not expect speedy service; however, staff was great overall. Puerto Lopez is a small fishing village and the Mandala is a comfy oasis at the end of the beach, with a very clean beachfront. If arriving in Manta, they can arrange an excellent driver, Tito, to pick you up. $40 each way.
