“Top-notch Pasta & Thin-Crust Pizza in Puerto Lopez - Casual, but Delicious”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 13, 2013

Having been a former restaurant reviewer earlier in life, I consider myself to have a critical and discerning palate. I have traveled extensively internationally and lived in some of the best "food cities" in the world, including NYC, San Fran, Dallas, Denver, Miami, LA, and spent months in Italy. We were encouraged by the locals to give this restaurant a try, and enjoyed it so much the first evening that we went back for a second time to try a greater variety of dishes from the menu. This is NOT deep-dish American-style pizza. This is thin-crust authentic Italian-style pizza, that happens to be among the best I have ever eaten. The flavors - from the crust, cheese, toppings, etc. are top quality and delicious, and cooked to perfection. We also sampled several of the pasta dishes, which were consistently outstanding and served in a relaxed and unpretentious manner. The restaurant itself is beach-front, fun and shorts/sandals casual (like most places in Puerto Lopez), but clearly has a quality feel. Indeed, the owners (the Italian husband and Ecuadorian wife) know their food. While the cost is at a slight premium relative to the locale, the value is tremendous, and the experience delightful. To place this in context, while clearly one can find a superior dining experience at a top restaurant in other cities, for a small sleepy fishing/tourist village in Ecuador, one would be hard-pressed to find a better meal. And for great pizza and homemade pasta, the food quality would be on par with any others in any city.

“Hard to find but absolutely worth it”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 11, 2013

It's at the very north end of the Malecon right next to the dry riverbed and on the street all you see is big sign that says PIZZA. It may look closed but walk down the steps and check it out. It's great. The pizza is thin crust and the first one we ordered was done with fresh tomatoes, fresh basil, local cheese, and a local sausage. It was so good we decided to have the Ecuador version a Hawaiian pizza. This one was done with fresh pineapple and the Ecuadorian version of ham, more fresh tomatoes and great cheese. Wine list was limited however what they had was very good and if you're not into wine just enjoy the National beer, which is excellent. Really enjoyed ourselves

“Nice Italian trattoria”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2013 via mobile

I would give this place three and a half stars if possible on Tripadvisor. The food is delicious, and I absolutely loved my fettuccini napolitano. My boyfriend also enjoyed his fettuccini bolognese. The panacotta dessert was fine as well, although I was persuaded to order either that or the cannoli, because the tiramisu was said to be frozen. Overall, I really liked the food, the restaurant was clean, and the servers were pleasant. I did feel the service by the owners was somewhat lacking. My boyfriend and I spent over $50 for dinner, yet the chef/owner didn't come by to talk with us, like the way he did with the other table of four people. (Perhaps I'm just spoiled because at Hosteria Mandala where we're staying, the owner Maja goes around and talks with each table.) I hope Casa Vecchia continues to do well (they had about six tables during peak dinner time), but I do hope there is more equal treatment of tables in the future.
