Have been here in the end of march 2012. Nice, quiet, remote place with low prices friendly staff). Local cat is very big and insolent)) Breakfasts were good and enough for me) The owner has good comman in English that was very helpful for us cause we don't speak Spanish.

My friend and I stayed at a hostal recommended in one of the traveler´s guides. It poured that night and the roof and walls leaked! We changed rooms but same problem. Electricity went out too and no generator.
Luckily, noticed Hosteria Nantu on a walk and for $3 more a night had far superior accomodations. ($15 a night per person.)Owner and some staff are fluent in English, friendly, welcoming and accomodating. They had a generator. Also, hammock, and chairs for veranda. A TV was also filming Ecuador´s version of Fear Factor in their pool! A woman afraid of water was being coached how to scubadive. The next day she was going to scuba dive in the Pacific. So, a little extra entertainment! We will definitely stay at Nantu in the future.

Room Tip: Lower floors have AC and view of pool. Upper level rooms have fans and good view of ocean.

If you are interested in staying in a very nice Hostel, close to town but away from the noise, this would be the place. It is a Beautiful place, and the owners are very, very nice people. The property is beautiful and right across from the beach. It also has a swimming pool, and a very nice restaurant with bar and pool table.

Room Tip: They are all nice rooms.

We checked into the Hosteria Nantu for three nights, but liked it so much we decided to stay another three. The owners are very friendly, and very helpful about the area and activities. The staff is also very friendly and efficient. We rented one of the two suites towards the front of the property. It had a refrigerator, airconditioner and tv. The rooms were tastefully furnished, and there was a porch to sit on and enjoy the and sunset over the ocean. There were also rooms in the back which were a bit smaller and also very nice. The breakfast each morning consisted of fresh fruit, fresh croissants, and eggs.
It was also very quiet at night, something important to us. It was within walking distance of town, but far enough away that there was no noise.

Reading previous Tripadvisor reviews, it seems that this was once a well run, well managed establishment. Not now! It started during the reservation process. Abrupt, kinda rude replies to our booking enquiries – and NO, we cannot pay a deposit into the Nantu Ecuadorian bank account - we are coming from England. We arrived to be told that our requested room was unavailable. As a substitute we were sent upstairs to a family room with fan not air conditioner. This came with flakey mouldy paint and horrid uncomfortable beds. The real joke was the following morning. When we moved to our actual room, we were told that we were lucky they had not charged us anything extra. We had after all stayed in a bigger room on the previous night. Er, what? The new room was a bit better, but the shower – despite calling maintenance - only dribbled hot water and there was the same over used uncomfortable beds. The pool was grimy. Divers (from somewhere?) used it to learn their skills thereby making the water salty & dirty. Location was out of town but well serviced by the motor taxis. Apologies – cannot comment on the breakfast – got up and just wanted to get out of there – ate elsewhere. Overall it was the attitude that was the most upsetting. All Rules & Regulations and no welcoming atmosphere or friendly attitude. And all this at a price that is at the top of the range. Be advised, find somewhere else. Bad value, bad experience.

The young lady at the desk, Andrea, was exceptionally heipful to us. The only meal we ate there was breakfast which was good but not included in the $50 price. The room was relatively clean, the A/C did not work, the lights by the bed didn't work, light over the desk didn't work, there were folks in the room above us that did not know how to walk softly and the area outside our room had a distinct unpleasant odor but in a pinch it was O.K.

Room Tip: Get only an upstairs room and check the A/C and lights

We are a family of three who spent 6 weeks in Ecuador. We spent 4 weeks in Puerto Lopez. The Nantu was a perfect hostaria for us. We checked out all the other accommodations in town, although they were all nice, the Nantu was the best. We tried staying downtown, but the noise at night was ridicules. The Nantu is only a short walk from downtown, but far enough away from the noise. The staff are amazing. Made us feel like family and speak very good English.
The rooms were inexpensive and cleaned everyday. The breakfasts were very good and the coffee was the best. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They arranged many outing for us, as our Spanish was sketchy to say the least.
While we were there the town was evacuated due to a tsunami warning. The staff of the Nantu took all of their guests to safety and fed and entertained us until the warning was lifted. No other hostaria in town took care of their guests this way. We met other Canadians who had to take their bags and fend for themselves. We really appreciate how the staff and management of the Nantu took care of all of us. They are very special people.
We would not stay anywhere else in Puerto Lopez. We highly recommend this accommodation. We intend to return for another extended vacation and are looking forward to spending more time there.
