“Lovely place to stay a couple of days in Puerto Lopez”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 15, 2013

This hostel is located a couple of blocks from malecon and 2-3 blocks from bus stop. But it’s not like a huge advantage, since the village is small and everything within 10-20 minutes walk.
I had a single room with bathroom en-suite. It was not huge but big enough. There is a fan in the room. Also outside there is a small balcony looking over the street shared with other 2 rooms on this floor.
Bed was big and comfortable. Linen was fresh and smelling good. Also there is a mosquito net but I didn’t use it since didn’t see any mosquito around.
Bathroom facilities are good although shower could be a little bit more spacious. Water is hot and have a good pressure. Also it’s very stable in terms of temperature. Towel and soap are provided.
Also there is a book section for exchange/buying but guide books are not for sale, just for reading.
The owner is very friendly and talkative. She has a cat and a dog, but very jealous when someone trying to make friends with her pets.
Only shortcoming: it’s not 24h reception. So it’s better to tell in advance when you’re going to check out not to wait for a long time. Although I didn’t manage to do this the day before since there was nobody at reception and no one answer the ring-bell.

This hostal is awesome! You have great staff who are welcoming, professional and speak fluent English. The kitchen was outdoors and you could meet a lot of people while they were cooking- although some people were horrible about cleaning up after themselves.
The showers were hot, there were lockers in each dorm, places to camp, the rooms were clean and the internet was good. There was also another area to hang out in, tons of books, hammocks.. the whole nine yards. VERY CLEAN!!

I didn't have any issues at all and would stay again for sure!

The owners were just so sweet, and Maxima rescues animals that she takes care of on the property. They have a dog... if I recall his name was Spike? He was a sweetheart also.

I enjoyed my stay here.

I came here after being disgusted with Sol Inn thats down the street. The service was great the moment I arrived.

My favorite part was that the place was immaculate! The leaves are swept from the lawn daily and the whole place is scrubbed down. The shared kitchen was cleaned even better than we left it once we went to bed. The kitchen is extensive but it has your basics, refrigerator, freezer, stove, dishes/pots/knives, ETC.

They have DVDS for loan and a book exchange that costs 1$ plus a book.

Another traveler said it was the "biggest, nicest room and best shower in months" that he has had. There is hot water and good water pressure!

The prices were very reasonable, and they cook a good, decent size breakfast for cheap as well.

The owner, Maxima, lived in the US for 32 years and thus speaks excellent English. She has great stories and a great sense of humor!

There is a guard dog who is huge but nice once he knows you he is very sweet. He doesn;t quite realize how big he is but he is cleaner and nicer than most dogs here.

Overall I would really recommend this place and the other travelers i spoke with felt the same! I was honestly a little sad that my trip in Puerto Lopez was over, I wish I had started out here!!!

Room Tip: The camping area is very clean and nice. There are different size rooms for different budgets and th...

I don't always like mosquito land, but the Hotel Maxima is a good place to stay. Maxima and her husband try to make it a very good place and did a very good job. The rooms are amply and clean. They have a quite cool cat! But Puerto Lopez is mosquito land, so be warned!

Hostal Maxima is a well-run backpacker's hostal with a nice courtyard, balconies, lounge area and kitchen. The owners and staff are friendly and helpful and make a real effort at keeping the busy place clean and well-organized. It is a good place to meet other travelers, as there are usually people in the kitchen or other common areas, and the atmosphere is relaxed and inviting.

They also arranged our tour to view the whales and go to Isla de La Plata, which turned out to be a great trip at a very good price.

Not a luxury accommodation, but very adequate and at a good price. Puerto Lopez can be noisy at night, so don't expect absolute quiet at night! (The band that marched through the town streets at 6am on a Sunday morning was quite good.)

This hostel is quiet but still a good place for meeting people in the communal area. The showers are warm and rooms clean. There is a well equipped and clean kitchen. We had room 37, which is right at the top, it felt like heaving are own penthouse with sea view! You do hear the streetnoise in the morning. We booked a tour via the reception to Isla de la plata for a very good price. There are some building works next door at the moment but I can't remember it ever bothered me. Just around the corner is the supermarket and a bit further on the meat and veg market. In our eyes a very good choice and you get a lot for what you pay!

Room Tip: 37 is right at the top with seaview. You are at the street side though if you are a light sleeper

My wife and I had a great experience here. The owners are very friendly and helpful with planning for the trip to Isla de la plata. We were planning only a couple days stay, but ended up staying for a week. Sometimes the owner has some projects underway, and when we came they could use some assistance, so we worked out a trade where I worked and got the room for free. That is a special circumstance, but it was a good deal for both of us.

The garden, animals and friendly staff make this place really nice. Other highlights include the outdoor kitchen, hammocks, and rooftop access for drying clothes, and enjoying the stars or sun.

Thanks Maxima and Armando!
