“a christmas to remember!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 21, 2013

We spent a week with Angie and Diego on their incredible estancia over christmas. We spent a month travelling round Argentina, and this was easily the highlight of our trip. I am a regular rider, but my boyfriend was a beginner. But by the end of the week, thanks to patient teaching by the gauchos and the beautiful horses, we were riding out together everyday.
The rooms and food were both excellent, but it was the relaxed, family atmosphere that really makes this place special. There is always someone to sit and chat to, or equally if you want a quiet afternoon reading by the pool it is also the perfect place.
They have horses for every level, and everyone whilst we were there were incredibly happy with their horse. i would highly recommend this place to anyone, and we will most definitely be back! x

I have just come back from a week in the Estancia!!! My week was magic: an amazing experience of a gaucho life. Angie, Diego and all the team made me feel part of their family even before I arrived. I felt look after all the time and I have learnt so much about nature!! I horse rode as much as I wanted (Fabian, my guide, was more than great), ate too much, lived great experiences while having loads of fun and met fantastic people. I feel so inspired!!! I totally recommend the experience: it is so worth it!!! Thank you everyone for making my stay such a magic time!!!

This was a very special few days.

I contacted Angie 2 months prior to travelling to enquire about a booking. Angie who is the owner along with her husband Diego got back to me with some options for my dates straight away. Over the next few weeks I kept thinking of questions and nothing was too much trouble for Angie who provided very detailed answers to everything.

Angie kindly booked the overnight bus for us from BA as well which made it very easy to get there. The bus trip was about 8 and a half hours to La Esquina which is north of BA in Corrientes province. We travelled first class on with a flat bed which was very comfortable.

Diego picked us up at the bus station which is about a 10 minute ride away from the rural paradise of the Estancia.

I really wanted to go horse riding but am a total novice. The Estancia is set in 800 hectares and is a working farm with about 3000 cattle as well as 50 horses. The rooms are traditional but are beautifully clean. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all included as well as wine and all other drinks.

The Gauchos, Roque,Carlitos,Sergio and Fabian are amazing and very knowledgeable on the long horse rides through the beautiful country which is where the cattle graze with their newly born calfs. Wildlife you will probably see include cayman, ostrich, pigs and many species of birds. After a long ride there is nothing better than relaxing by the pool with a beer looking out at the beautiful scenery.

From being a novice on the first day I was cantering on the 2nd as well as riding through a river!

Angie and Diego and all the Gaucho's are among the most hospitable people I have ever met and provide an amazing and unique experience. I could only stay for 2 days but could have easily spent a week.

I will certainly be going back and I strongly recommend Don Joaquin to everyone else as well.

Angie and Diego are excellent hosts! I was a solo traveler and they spent some time with me each day so that I would get the most out of my experience at Estancia don Joaquin. They even took me out for drinks at a local bar in town one evening! The gauchos are also fantastic! Carlitos and Fabian are very patient guides on our long horse rides, Miguel made delicious meals everyday and Roque cooks up a mean asado!

The horse riding was an amazing experience! I went from being attached to a leash on my first ride, to galloping on my second day, to hitting polo on my last day. So don't be deterred if you are a novice rider, I've rarely been on horses before this as I grew up and live in the city. The horse rides are very memorable, often for hours at a time, but leaving me wishing it went for even longer!

It's taken us almost a month to write this review bc it is impossible to describe what this week meant to us. We are a mid-30's couple from Canada who travelled around Argentina for 7 weeks. My husband grew up on a farm but has been away for it for decades; I am city girl. When in Argentina the Estancia experience for us was a must-do!!!! And this is the one to do!!! My husband researched lots and wrote to a few, but from the prompt, warm, and detailed reply from Angie we knew this was the one! Plan to stay longer than you initially consider and the rest just falls into place. It was a perfect balance between relaxation and experience! The bus is the easiest and best way to get there and was very comfy! The station is only 10 mins away from this rural paradise. The food was spectacular and homemade daily...we still dream of the warm breakfast breads which ultimately ended in me splitting my pants:). We loved that it wasn't trying to be something it shouldn't be. We felt like we were truly living on the ranch with all it's quiet coziness but with all the comfort you would want in vacation accomodations; the bed and linens felt like climbing into heaven every night ( and sometimes for afternoon siesta:) I was afraid of horses upon arrival and by weeks end after 2 rides a day the gaucho's couldn't keep up. Perhaps a slight exaggeration but I galloped comfortably and confidently and we are convinced we want land and horses after this experience. There was so much land available that every ride afforded a different view/experience! As if all that wasn't enough, the rivers are home to numerous large fish and we caught dinner one beautiful day with a spectacular guide who barbequed lunch on the coastline ( this costs extra but well worth it) and there is an area close by with vast varieties of animals that were unique to us and were able to get quite close for photos. We were lucky enough to stay 8 days and it was horrible to leave. The owners Angie and Diego are warm, knowledgeable, hospitable and we felt like they welcomed us into their family. They will help with booking buses and making suggestions to make this experience memorable in any way that you wish. We haved travelled extensively and this was our most special week ever! Please know that there really is no way to describe this experience with words or even photos, but if you are even considering this as part of your plans you will treasure your time here!!!!

Room Tip: Just go and see for yourself

It was this phrase by a trip advisor reviewer which moved me to choose a visit to this estancia from a long list of possibilities, plus a personal recommendation from a colleague. No disappointments - we had a fabulous time and I can recommend this estancia to anyone seeking good riding, fishing (not directly experienced but it's available) and a chance to see some wildlife close up. You won't get tacky gaucho dances and songs (thankfully) but you will get a warm welcome and great hospitality on a working cattle ranch. My husband was adamant that he was not going on a horse following a bad experience 30 years ago. However, by the time we ended our two days here, he had been on three great rides and enjoyed every minute. The estancia is owned by a wonderful couple, Angie and Diego who really do attend closely to guests' needs and wishes and in the nicest possible way make you feel like friends who have dropped in for a few days rather than paying guests. The rooms are comfortable and the food and wine agreeable and plentiful. One thing I feel that I should point out is that there is no grand estancia house here, the rooms are purpose built around the farm in a stylish setting. For me, this does not detract from the experience and is more than offset by the great atmosphere, attentive staff and truly wonderful hosts. It's well placed if you are doing the Buenos Aires - Iguazu Falls run, as we were. This estancia is en route and allows you to break the long bus trip with a real holiday highlight. Angie will help with organising and booking buses if needed and you will be picked up from the bus station which is about 10 minutes drive away (many places charge for this). Just get in touch by email and you will get a prompt reply. Prices are reasonable too, compared with many on offer. For the summer months, there is a good sized pool in a wild pampas setting and I can imagine that a swim here would be a great boost after a few hours in the saddle. So, along with all these reviews, this place is highly recommended by this 'mature couple'.
