If you like a good Eco lodge then try Chicanna Ecovillage. The rooms are shaped like huts with thatched roof. Beds have misquito netting, fans and no air conditioning. The pool is very nice and for bird watchers they are all around. Lots of plants/ orchids all around also. Howler monkeys were out starting around 4am. The room was spacious and the bathroom was quite adequate. The porch had a hammock to sit in and a couple of large chairs to relax in. The restaurant had great food. Wifi and cell service is only around the restaurant.

Room tip: Any of the rooms has a great view of the surrounding jungle area

First let’s talk about the things we liked: the resort is close to different Maya temples and ruins and so you can watch many historical places like we did. We were in Chicanna, Xpujil and finally in Becain. After arriving at the resort we were happy and excited. The place we found looked lovely, first, but if you watch carefully you will find some things which aren’t correct. The room was nice but there was only one outlet to charge our things and that one was behind a sideboard we had to move. In the evening we missed a hairdryer in the bathroom. The resort has a pool and we wanted to relax there but unfortunately there were only 4 or 5 sun beds and some chairs. We think, it’s too less. The resort has a tower next to the pool. After climbing you have a fantastic view. You see the forest around the resort. The condition of the tower is not the latest one and you should take care : the handrail is wobbly. The resort has a restaurant which we used twice and it was an experience. The first one we only wanted to have a snack and a coffee. But the waiter forgot half of the ordered things, we had to remember and we waited long. In the evening the waiters didn’t realize that new guests have arrived, the restaurant was buzy and they were standing in a corner and talked and so we waited long again. But the food looked lovely prepared and was delicious. Let’s talk about that one, where I have the most problems. It’s an eco resort and while we were traveling through Mexico we saw so much rubbish near the road or in bushes and unfortunately it was there, too. Behind our room was a little bush and between it and the next house there were many things lying around started from plastic bottles, tools and toilet lids. I was shocked !!! All in all the staff was friendly but in the morning while I was still in der restaurant my daughter came and said that I should come, cause the guy waits and wants to bring our luggage to the car. It was around 8:40 in the morning. It’s nice that he wants to help but I was talking and should come and I’m sorry but it felt like slinging out. I want to decide which time I wanna go. For the future I hope that things will be changed there. The road is close to the camp and that’s not a problem. You will listen the birds and the traffic isn’t present. But all people who say that you don’t listen the traffic noise aren’t true. Therefore the resort is to close to the main road. I’m sorry.

This was a pleasant suprise. Friendly, good service at very reasonable price. Everything clean but simple room as expected. Pool was very nice. Excellent location for nearby ruins. Coconut shrimp with mango sauce was the best meal of the trip and very reasonably priced. All other meals were good as well. If looking for a good stop between Chetmul and Escarcega don't miss this great stop. Was reasonable distance after seeing Calakmul to go to Palenque thereafter.

The hotel is fine, given you are in the middle of the jungle.
The reception staff was really nice and helpful when we arrived. They even gave us great recommendations on our trip the next day to Calakmul.
The restaurant was a good surprise: very tasty food and healthy too! Lovely!
The bad point is that the hotel’s dog bit our 13 year old on our way to our car at 6:00 am. Although the security personnel who was walking beside her tried to call the dog away from her, it was to no avail. She got bitten. We had to go to the emergency room in Chetumal (170km away).
If dogs don’t obey they should definitely not be within the hotel’s premises, let alone close to clients.
We are waiting to receive formal confirmation that the dog has been vaccinated against rabies.

The rooms are very spacious and clean. They have bottles water, which for foreign travellers is always a bonus. Beds are comfortable. There’s a restaurant on site. You’re really in the middle of nowhere, far form road so you don’t get traffic noise. Great base for your travels in Calakmul Reserva.
