We ate here following a recommendation from our hosts at the Harbourview Inn in Smith's Cove - once again their recommendation was spot on.
The restaurant sits above the ferry ramp at Freeport and has a gorgeous view over the sea to Brier Island. It is unassuming from the outside but once you get in the smell of delicious freshly cooked seafood nearly overwhelms you. As soon as you walk in you know you are in a great place for fish.
Our waitress was friendly and welcoming, making sure we had the table of our choice before reeling off the specials. The halibut chowder was recommended and did not disappoint - it had so much fish in it it was a meal in itself - luckily we only had a cup rather than a bowl or we would never have managed the main course! For our main we opted for the baked Digby scallops - they were superb; sweet, succulent and huge, a real stand out meal from our holiday. Our only complaint was that we were so full we couldn't manage a desert because they looked epic!
Lavena's Catch is defintely worth making the trip down the island for. We went again the following night but it was closed due to some 'water problems' which was a huge disappointment as I had really psyched myself up for the pan fried halibut.....oh well, it gives us a reason to return another time.

This is a family style restaurant that serves the freshest seafood it is possible to obtain and prepared in a manner that even the fishermen coming back. It is no nonsense, no dribbles of sauces to mask flavours, just outstanding food.

The ferry operator recommended Lavena's, and we weren't disappointed. The prices were quite reasonable, the portions hearty and the atmosphere very laid back. The menu wasn't extensive, but it had the seafood we came to Nova Scotia to find. We ate on the patio overlooking the water. The service was pleasant, and we never felt rushed. The food was very fresh -- we could see the lobster traps holding our meal!

Lavenas was recommended to us by more then a few locals in Digby and we just had to try it. The restaurantès last seating was at 7:30 pm, and we were silly with our timing, and wanted to leave our car on the westport side so we could drink and not drive!! Monica was super great said, as long as we were on the 7:30 ferry she didnt mind. well we rushed over to one side (when i say rushed, waited half an hour for the ferry). We checked into our hostel, which was about to close. Ran back to ferry dock and just made it.
When we entered the restaurant it was empty. My partner in crime and I are servers as well, and felt terrible about keeping poor Monica there. Monica did not seem to mind at all, she asked if we minded sitting on the bar side so she could clean up the dinning area. This was not a problem, as there were trivia games and a friendly local on the bar side. We ordered digby famous scallops and pan seared haddock. Drank some cats pee on a gooseberry bush (white wine) and enjoyed a great round of Malarky!! Monica is a creative candied peppered whiz, and shared with me her sweet and spicy ice ceam sauce!!! It was the most interesting delcious thing I have ever had. She shared stories of the area from her whale guiding days. As we were setting off for a tour the next day. She aint no bartender but still managed to whip up some delcious shots for my gal and I!!!
Monica was great... She didnt have to let us come back in after last seating, as it was our fault for not planning properly. For staying later and giving us a memorable exprience, and reminding me that everyone deserves to eat delicious food!!!
