We ate here following a recommendation from our hosts at the Harbourview Inn in Smith's Cove - once again their recommendation was spot on.
The restaurant sits above the ferry ramp at Freeport and has a gorgeous view over the sea to Brier Island. It is unassuming from the outside but once you get in the smell of delicious freshly cooked seafood nearly overwhelms you. As soon as you walk in you know you are in a great place for fish.
Our waitress was friendly and welcoming, making sure we had the table of our choice before reeling off the specials. The halibut chowder was recommended and did not disappoint - it had so much fish in it it was a meal in itself - luckily we only had a cup rather than a bowl or we would never have managed the main course! For our main we opted for the baked Digby scallops - they were superb; sweet, succulent and huge, a real stand out meal from our holiday. Our only complaint was that we were so full we couldn't manage a desert because they looked epic!
Lavena's Catch is defintely worth making the trip down the island for. We went again the following night but it was closed due to some 'water problems' which was a huge disappointment as I had really psyched myself up for the pan fried halibut.....oh well, it gives us a reason to return another time.
