“Relaxing bed and breakfast in small Newfoundland town of historic importance”
Reviewed July 15, 2007

Wonderful historic house built in 1919 in Grand Bank, famous for its fishery, set up as bed and breakfast.

Serene and peaceful with upper outside deck overlooking the bay/ocean. Widow's walk upstairs adds to historic charm.

Hosts John and Gerry offered 25$ four course meal, vichysoise soup, cod with shrimp and fresh vegetables, salad and amazing home made lemon tart, excellent value and a cut above what would be available at a local restaurant. Breakfast consisted of selection of yoghourt, cereal, OJ, tea/coffee, toast and poached eggs with fishcakes. If you have food allergies or dietary restrictions just mention when you book. Beer and wine are available at good prices.

Rooms are large, well kept and clean. Ask for the front facing honeymoon suite with large claw foot bathtub and shower and view over the bay.

Given the age of the house, there are always some things that need upkeep and the outside is currently being repainted but all amenities were in good working order.

There are two friendly dogs but if you should not want them around, they can easily be kept away.

A little bit of peace in this hectic world.

  • Liked — Historic quality of property, hospitable innkeepers
  • Disliked — We were there as only guests, it may be busy if all rooms are full

The house has a lot of history and our room was very nice. There are not many facilties in Grand Bank and the owners here offer dinner if you are there in time to get your name on the list and if they have room. If not they advise of a coffee shop nearby which is apparently quite good.

Our hosts didn't advise that there is a full-service licenced restaurant right around the corner which was very clean and where the food was quite good. This seemed intentional to encourage guests to join them for a $25 dinner which we heard was also quite good.....only one choice of what to eat though.

We did not enjoy breakfast as again there was only one choice and not something we could eat which is sort of embarassing when your host is sitting there watching you leave your entire breakfast.

The hotel is OK and the hosts were really fine but there is not much to see or do in this area. We did not find the hotel that clean and they do have a couple of large dogs that like to lay on your feet during meals. This did not bother us at all because we are dog lovers....others may not feel the same.
