“A great place for dinner and to stay”
Reviewed May 18, 2013

The Thorndyke was a highlight of our trip to Newfoundland. Great hosts, fine food, and very comfortable and attractive rooms. A built as a sea captain's home, its designation as a Registered Heritage Structure is well deserved. If the weather is good, do not fail to take a walking tour of Grand bank. The Thorndike is a fine place to stay the night before a trip by boat to St. Pierre. And the dinner they prepared for us was superb.

We were only able to get this lovely B&B for one night. That was unfortunate, because it was so nice, we would have been happy to stay for longer. It is only about 5 km away from the ferry to St. Pierre, so after a rough crossing back to Newfoundland, we were pleased not to have to drive to far. This 1917 home is a wonder to explore, both inside and out. The view over the water from the upstairs balcony has to be seen to be believed. We lucked out and they had a cancellation in their resturant/dinning room. The food was first class, we had the fresh salmon and cod respectively and it was excellent. Breakfast was equally as good with toast, pan fries, eggs and fruit. Make sure to put this place on your list to stay!

We recently ate at the Thorndyke in Grand Bank and had an amazing meal! The portions were huge and food was delicious. The dining room was was so cozy. Colleen gave us wonderful service and made us feel at home. We asked if we could look around the bed and breakfast and she told us to go right ahead. The view of the harbor was so nice I want to stay there just to wake up in the morning for that alone!

Room Tip: My favorite room is the one with the canopy bed

It is impossible to review magic. A lovingly restored and enhanced old hotel. Forget the B&B title; Dinner is also offered to guest and public alike and is prepared and presented in a world class setting. The stuff of dreams. And yes, I saw whales out my window.

Room Tip: Make reservations way in advance, and ask for the room with the claw foot tub. Try to be there when...

We were not able to get a reservation for the B&B but were quite impressed by the restaurant. The food was interesting, tasty and reasonably priced. It is a bit upscale for area as there are not too many good places to eat in Grand Bank. The staff were pleasant and the service was reasonable. We enjoyed the view from the balcony as the restaurant is across from the ocean. It is a beautiful old home that has been transformed into a B&B and restaurant. It's a must if you are staying in the area.

When we walked in the front door of The Thorndyke we were warmly greeted by the owners, Colleen and Glynn. Throughout our stay they made us feel like old friends.

The Inn is appointed with antiques, some a little on the funky side. (That's a good funky, not a bad funky.) The rooms are ample size and the bathrooms modern and large

Glynn does most of the cooking. Both dinner and breakfast were very good.

If you're heading to the end of the Burin Peninsula, perhaps to take the ferry to St. Pierre, I highly recommend staying at The Thorndyke. Book well in advance as it just has four rooms and fills up early during the tourist season.

Room Tip: Try to get one of the two rooms facing the ocean.

The dinner was to die for!! It was our best meal in Newfoundland. Many kudos to the chef. Great place to stay. Great service and we loved the heritage look and touches. We were very comfortable there. We were sorry to have missed the theatre. We'll just have to come back.
