“Quiet charm”
Reviewed July 6, 2009

Stayed one night, on a recent weekend. Booked via laterooms, and got a decent enough room for 40 pounds. Warm welcome from the proprietor. Room was spacious enough, and bathroom even more so. I don't quite understand why anyone would carpet a bathroom, the furnishings were not to my taste at all, and the wardrobe failed the wooden coat hanger test, but that apart, it was a very good value experience. Breakfast was included but I didn't take it, so can't comment on that. Location is excellent if you like outdoorsy activities like hiking, and across the road, the Old Pandy Inn is a fine place to visit.

Arrived at five past three in the afternoon. No rooms ready, hoovers everywhere, piles of laundry on the stairs. Wandered around looking for someone and eventually found the lady proprietor who promptly told us she was not ready as she hadn't finished scrubbing and cleaning. When we asked if our room was ready we were told to wait for 20 minutes until it could be prepared, all this even after booking one week previously.
Anyway we waited in car park for 15 minutes and then decided to seek accommodation elsewhere. We again searched out the owner and told her as the room was not ready we would be going elsewhere. She informed us that as she had our credit card number she would charge us anyway. We told her that such an action would result in legal proceedings. She has since plundered our credit card with no authorisation from us and we have indeed commenced court action against The Park Hotel.

Three girls walking The Offa's Dyke Path. We had sent home the tent the day before we walked the Hatterall Ridge on our way to Pandy and was without a place to stay that evening. I called The Park Hotel and spoke to a lady. She was very helpful and professional and provided us a discount because we were walkers. She confirmed the booking and asked whether we would require food that evening.

We got to the hotel three hours earlier than we had stated and was welcomed as soon as we got there and taken to the room. The room was well presented and very comfortable. We had a delicous meal and a dessert, the food was excellent and the restaurant was very modern and clean. The next morning the lady prepared a full breakfast with plenty of options. It was a good start to a long walk ahead (our last day).

I would highly recommend this hotel for it's friendly staff, good food and the rooms were great. I would certainly go back.

We stayed overnight at the hotel and when we arrived the room had obviously not been 'hoovered'. There was no hot water the following morning for a shower- when we complained to the owner, she was not particularly interested- maybe a reduction from the bill would have been appropriate. Breakfast was good, but the service very poor, and slow.

I have stayed at this hotel for 3 years running now and slowly the hotel has been upgraded and improved until it is now very comfortable and well appointed. The owners and staff have always been very friendly . The breakfast was very good and at £35/night I can't really fault this hotel; there's a nice restaurant which I didin't try but looked very good and I would recommend this hotel to other travellers.

We stayed at the Park Hotel in Pandy in May 2008. We needed a room for the night so we could visit relatives who were staying at the fabulous Jinks Cottage not far away in Llangattock Lingoed. The hotel we chosen for it's proximity - just three miles distant.

On arrival we were greeted very warmly asked if we would like tea or coffee and shown to our room.

The hotel is currently in the process of being refurbished which is a good thing as it is certainly needed. Our room was in an odd state of decor as it had been given a lick over with the paintbrush to smarten it up but this really wasn't enough. The window didn't open or close - it had been partially built over! The bathroom had a new towel rail and so onbut the bath, baisin and commode were clearly a far older vintage. A new fire alarm was in the process of being installed and two red wires a foot long were jutting out from the ceiling.

Yet more fundamental as a problem was that the single long radiator to heat the room was behind the headboard of the bed.

Being rather British we just got on and had a decent night's sleep.

Breakfast in the morning was top notch and served in the main restaurant - its decor was new and faultless! The only failing was that the plates were not properly hot- a simple error to correct - and the food was so tasty it didn't matter.

All in all I am afraid I cannot recommend the hotel based on our recent experience, especially as the room rate of £80 wasn't justified given the state of the room we stayed in.

However I do not wish to leave a totally negative perception of the place. The owners/staff clearly have enthusiasm and are clearly new. If the rooms are refurbished to the standard of the main restaurant they will be well worth their rate and probably more. I understand that as a business the need for revenue for cash flow is important but I feel they have opened too soon.

My advice to the owners is to only let rooms that have been properly completed. Our room needed

* A new window. That works and opens properly.
* Gutting completely.
* New half length radiators to replace the old full length one so that the headboard of the bed can be up against a wall - not a radiator.
* Completely new bathroom. The fancy whirlpool thing is unnecessary but being new and unfaded is important.
* A new bed with a proper headboard so that one can sit up in bed and read or watch TV
* Decent TV reception. Get a system in.

If you are staying in the area you could do worse. But I reckon it will be a much better place to stay NEXT year.

I don't think I've ever had such a warm welcome. The room was lovely, the decor simple and elegant and the food was excellent . Everyone was so pleasant too. What's more it is in glorious countryside. We followed our stay by walking up into the Black Mountains. Just wonderful! I have told as many people as I can about this lovely hotel.
