“A great view and a workout thrown in!!!”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

Although the parking is a bit manic and unorganised and the road a wee bit scary, this is well worth a visit. Not suitable for the unfit, although you can just take your time and do it at your own pace. The steps down to the lighthouse are steep but there is a handrail. The views are fantastic. When we arrived it was a beautiful sunny day, very windy but lovely. We had the dog and they must be kept on the lead as there are sheep grazing everywhere. We walked all the way out to the lighthouse and rock area and watched gannets dive bombing for fish. Just as we prepared to head back the weather moved in, it went really dull and started to rain sideways! The climb back up was a workout and a half( we are not that fit ). We had to take a few breaks on the way back up, have never been so happy to see the car!! It's worth the effort but maybe check the weather before you go.

Breathtakiing cliffs! Minke whales and dolphins! You MUST be a very good physical shape to do the hike down and back up...incredibly steep but wonderful exercise and WELL worth it! LOVED Neist Point!

“Lovely views and a nice walk”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

Fantastic scenery on the walk from the car park to the lighthouse. It is steep on the way back, however it is well worth it to see the lovely views, waterfalls and lighthouse. Stunning!

“stark and spectacular coastal views with a scenic lighthouse”
Reviewed August 5, 2013

This is a worthwhile outing, which seems like you are in the middle of nowhere (and you pretty much are), but the drive is not as long as you might think, unless you stop a lot for pictures or other things. Along the road, you will find the Skye Silver jewellery store, which is worth at least a few minutes of browsing, if not purchasing, some of their fine, high-quality work. And, there is a tea room along the way, but was closed when we went by, so we didn't have a chance to try it. No other commercial establishments that we saw, so if you want drinks or a picnic, purchase everything before you start out.
The place is popular, so the car park is likely to be crowded during tourist times. Be sure you don't park in such a way that you block someone else from getting out. You can't see the lighthouse from the car park, but that is the goal of the walk, even though you cannot go inside it. You can only view it from the outside, but the building complex is lovely white with orange trim and worth a picture or two.
The walk starts with a steep path alongside the cliff, with some steps and cabling for a handhold. This drops down to the grassy level at the base of the cliff, where the path continues across the meadow and over the next hill. This is the point at which you can see the lighthouse, but the trail continues on down to the next level and toward the lighthouse. You can go as far as you want on the path, but be sure to stop and scan the waters for whales. Where you can see the sides of the sheer cliffs, you can look for seabirds (auks, shags, gulls, etc.) nesting on the impossibly tiny rock shelves, in the right season.
Before you start the walk, consider that you will have to climb back up the steep, cliffside path on the way back to the car park. This is easier than it looks (the low, sea-level altitude helps), but just remember to stop as often as necessary to catch your breath, and take one more glance at the beautiful scenery.

“Don’t miss this very special place”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

It’s worth noting that there is approximately a 20 minute walk from the car park to the lighthouse. This is fairly steep on the way back. However, the reward is one of the best sea views on Skye. We couldn’t believe our luck when we spotted Minke Whales - which we then proceeded to keep watching for 2 hours!
