Owner description: The Perfume Studio has been likened to a visitor centre and situated in a wonderful location on the shores of Loch Ewe, just three miles from the turn-off to Aultbea. We are multi-functional, manufacture our own perfumes, cremes and soaps, running a quality cafe and offering an unusual gift shop. Our own branded toiletries are manufactured with top quality ingredients, our cafe serves a selection of teas and coffees, lunches and yummy cakes and we were awarded the Taste Our Best Award by Visit Scotland in 2015, 2016 and 2017. As far as possible, our gift shop is stocked from local and Scottish suppliers and there is a substantial range of books, both fiction and non-fiction and maps of the area. The Image Studio is a working photography studio from which we run residential workshops - usually during the winter, when the light is low. We are very proud to hold a 5* Visit Scotland accreditation.

I visited The Perfume Studio today to fulfill my daughter's request for some soap to replace the one I bought her on a visit 2 years ago. The ownership had apparently changed hands since my last visit but all was as I remembered it. The wonderful smell of the place, the light and airy cafe (with wonderful cake!), the variety of gifts and the wide range of lotions and potions made from and scented with a tantalising array of natural products. All this plus a stunning view over Loch Ewe. Lovely!

Thank you for your review and we are pleased that you enjoyed your visit to The Perfume Studio. I am not sure who told you that we are under new ownership since your last visit two years ago but that is not correct. We bought The Perfume Studio during the 2010 season and are still the current owners and into our fourth season. Hopefully, we will get to meet you on your next visit. Adrian and Katie Hollister

Great cafe, shop and studio. Quality food, welcoming staff, beautiful location. We've been coming to Mellon Charles for many years and this is a highlight of each visit.

On a recent trip to Scotland we came across a lovely little place called Mellon Charles. The road showed a dead end and we saw a sign for the Perfume Studio. When we got to the studio we were pleasantly surprised to find it had a cafe attached. This was situated on top of a little rising bay where sea otters played amongst the kelp.

The perfume Studio is through the main entrance to the cafe and was fairly large. On display were lots of perfumed natural products including some very nice soaps. There was also other gift and prints available to buy.

The cafe assistants were very helpful and very friendly. The decor and furnishings in the cafe were very nice but on this particular day it was very warm and we chose to sit outside. The view over the little bay was beautiful and the food was lovely. Even our dog had a large quantity of Mozzerella cheese given to him by a member of staff...with our permission of course.

If you are out that way it is well worth a visit

It is worth the trek out to the end of Mellon Charles for the carrot cake alone at the Perfume Studio. To work up an appetite continue along the track on foot to the old WW2 gun positions and ruined buildings at the headland, very interesting for history geeks. The perfume studio is part café and part shop. Wasn't too impressed with a lot of what was on offer in the shop as it was tending towards the twee little sayings on plaques more than anything else, but they do sell nice soaps and perfumes as the name suggests. The café is quite pricey but the quality is good and you get service with a smile.

Firstly, let us thank you for visiting us in Mellon Charles. We are some miles off the beaten track and we really appreciate every one of the 16,000 visitors who make the journey every summer. Thank you!

We are delighted that you enjoyed your time at the cafe and in particular the carrot cake - we do all our own baking, using only quality, fresh ingredients and it is always a special bonus to us when visitors like yourself appreciate that, so thank you for your well-received comments on the baking!

We are sorry that our shop didn't live up to your expectations. It is difficult to appeal to everyone's taste but we have to point out that in the main, our customers love "pottering" around the shop and enjoy what we have on display. It is a constant job maintaining the five * rating awarded to our shop by Visit Scotland and in this year's report, they commented particularly favourably on the range of goods available, both with regards to price and variety. Their report is available on their website if you would like to read it. We would just like to add that as well as the plaques that you commented on, we also sell woollens and clothing, hats, clocks, nautical-themed gifts, vases, gardening 'knick knacks', jewellery, scarf pins, glassware, cushions, products to compliment our soaps and cremes, pot pourri, children's "pocket money" items, chocolates, jams, chutneys, sweets, gift tins of biscuits, chocolates and fudges, speciality vinegars and numerous other items. My husband and I are not golfers and if we chose to go into a golfing shop and they sold golfing items of no interest to us, we are not sure how appropriate it would be for us to down-grade their shop in a review, purely because we don't like golfing paraphernalia! However, as we do please 99% of our customers, including Visit Scotland, we are happy to continue stocking our shop as we have done for the past three years.

Our team work tirelessly during the summer to ensure a good experience is had by all who visit and we thank you for recognising the staff in our review. They are invaluable to us and are friendly and happy people, always willing to help.

With regard to pricing, our prices are comparable with other quality establishments in the area. As you come from a city, you are probably not aware of the huge transport costs we pay to have items delivered here. There is some considerable controversy over this at the moment and only this week, there have been discussions on the BBC to this effect. Our fresh produce is delivered three times a week from Inverness and as that is 88 miles away, we are sure you can appreciate that all of that comes at a premium.

All that being said, thank you, again, for your visit - we hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in the Highlands, have a safe journey home and we hope to welcome you again soon.

What a beautiful place! We drove for about 3 hours but it was well worth it. The perfume and gift shop is stocked with lots of interesting and lovely pieces. The soaps are gorgeous and you can smell the perfume on your hands for a while afterwards.
We know a good cafe when we see one! and this one, in our opinion, is probably one of the nicest in scotland. The menu is imaginative and interesting, the view is second to none and the food and drinks are superb. The people are very friendly.
If you are considering visiting this place and are concerned about the distance just go for it you will be rewarded with a lovely lunchtime experience second to none.
