“worn out hotel”
Reviewed September 14, 2013 via mobile

We have been to this hotel several times before over the 20 years but haven't been for the last 5 years, we always booked the queen victoria suite which was always the best room In the hotel. The setting of the room was excellent with a 4 poster bed, a corner double spa bath and shower, twin wash basins, toliet and bidet and a nice restaurant under the arch way. I have to say that was then but now the hotel is run down and dirty we again had the same room which was now called room 1 we paid cash as the card machine we were told was not working. We only paid £45 for the so called best room I thought the girl at the desk had got it wrong and we had got ourselves a bargain should have known better as we opened the door to the room it looked the same as last time not until the lights were on did we see how run down the hotel had become. The wallpaper was coming off the wall all along the top off one wall also in the corner by the window the paint work all around the window was dirty and dusty there were no net curtains the curtains that were there were dusty. The room furniture had cup marks all over every piece. The lampshade on the bedside lamp had a burn mark on it. The four poster bed was rickety and the bottom sheet was far too small to tuck under the mattress. There was only one towel for two people. Moving onto the triple size bathroom. Oneof the two wash basins which were pink had turned green. The brass taps on the sink were now an awful brown. The toilet was blocked. The bidet was the same as the washbasin disgusting. As for the spa bath, the spa part of the bath was no longer working and the mixer tap was broken so there was no shower. The tops of the mixer taps were missing. When you drained the bath the pipes made an awful noise coming up through the two washbasins ten foot away. There were a block of tiles on top of the wall missing. The grouting and sealant all around the bath had come off. The tiled soap holder was hanging off the wall. The only good thing about the bath is that it was a large corner bath.
The noise from the bar/ club below was very loud until approx 2 in the morning. Then replaced with the noise of lots of glass smashing into their bins in the courtyard below.

This hotel is truly awful, the building is absolutely filthy and looks like it was last decorated when Jim Callaghan was in Number 10! Worn carpets, rickety staircases and a maze of dim corridors add to the general feeling of dirt and squalor! I cannot comment on my stay, as I just looked at two of the rooms and quickly left. If you are looking for a budget hotel in Rochester, try the Saint George!

firstly they could not take a card payment as facilities were down so I had to walk down the high st to the cash point. The room was dark and dismal and smelt musty, toilet was BLACK at the bottom of the pan, black mould around the bath, very dusty, so much so that you could write in the dust. then to top it all there was a very large red/brown stain on the sheet, we asked lady on reception to change our room, she came to inspect our findings then gave us keys to another room. in this room the shower cubicle was full of black mould, it was again very dusty, filthy net curtains had a ten inch tear in them, curtains were filthy and stained the chair was ripped large cracks in walls in shower and main room, artex coming off ceiling. Dare not ask for another room so put up with the mess as was only to sleep in as visiting relatives so spent most of time with them. I woke during both nights on a number of occasions with asthma attack and had to use my inhaler, this has not happened to me before or since. I asked the receptionist for clean sheets and towels on second day and the sheets were changed with clean very creased sheets and one set of towels for both myself and my husband. No one was on reception after 10pm and the very large gate was locked, we had a key for this and had to move some very heavy bars to open the gate to get the car in. Breakfast was disgusting so cancelled for the second morning, receptionist came to room in the morning with a refund and told us that the chef had left. What a horrible hotel.. this was a hotel from hell....

On arriving we were faced with a maze of hallways and stairs before we got to our room, the room had not been cleaned, bed not changed, carpet not vacuumed. The wallpaper and borders were peeling from the walls. The curtains were not attached to the rails in most places and they could not be closed with the windows open (so no fresh air at night). The bathroom door would not close as the top hinge was hanging off the door frame, to be honest, its not hard to keep a room clean and well maintained so people come back again & again, I know we won't go back.

We got to the hotel early afternoon but decided not to hang around. We should have seen it coming as the walk up to the room saw dirty carpets and peeling paintwork. The room was adequate in size with an en suite but that is where the positive comments end. The windows were filthy, the decor tired (although i usually like kitsch if it's at least well maintained!) The bathroom was dingy and grimey; my partner wanted to freshen up but there was no hot water! After an hour or so we decided to move on. It's a shame as Rochester is a beautiful city and is buzzing with tourists..this place could be an absolute gold mine if it was just brought up to date and treated with TLC.
