Hornsea mere as not changed for at least 50 years to my knowing. We have a caravan on Burton Constable ,about 9 miles away and visit quite often to have a drink and a snack in the unchanged and always spotless cafe, and weather permiting have a round of golf (my rowing days are done)and feed the animals. The approach road and the carpark are very rough and bumpy but i dont mind it actually makes everyone drive slow, there are bird droppings all over but it is their residence,so if you dont like this stay away you are not meant to be there. The views from the cafe are great and the toilets are always clean good food and service, plenty of wild life what else could you ask for.

Like some of the other contributors,I have been a regular visitor to the mere for many years. Please, please, don't let the few people who like everywhere to be sanitised let anything change at this beautiful timeless place.
If you want perfectly tarmaced roads and modern cafe and toilets then carry on down the road to Freeport, although you will find the roads there have speed bumps to discourage speeding.
The cafe sells very reasonably priced food and has some wonderful views over the mere. The decor suits the age of the building and I have never had to sit at a sticky table, or wait for a seat.
The toilets are basic, but clean, what more do you need? I visit the mere to enjoy the views and the birdlife, not to look at the toilets! It is a treat in early summer to take a rowing boat out and get closer to the birds on the water, especially when there young birds are out and about.

This is our favourite place to visit in Hornsea, The Mere is full of alsorts of birds, Swans, Geese etc. The Cafe is closed at the moment for refurbishment but cant wait for it to open again, the food is excellent, and such a wonderful outlook as you sit having your food or just a drink, great place, we are so lucky having this on our doorstep.

I should say that if you want to visit the Mere - best advise would do it in the spring/summer... went for the first time yesterday and it was a quagmire! Toilets/Cafe/Ice Cream window were all closed so had to go elsewhere for a cuppa - you would have thought that on a lovely sunny winter weekend they would have made some effort for the cars up there (we were not alone!).

The cafe is undergoing renovation at the moment and I hope that this renovation is also used to sort out the access roads as these are potholed and realistically only suitable for a 4wd vehicle!

Limited walking possibilities - should have thought that walking around the Mere would have been possible :(
