Description: The Tom Cobley Tavern is a small country Tavern which serves the parish of Spreyton and the surrounding area. It is the hub of village life; on most evenings locals meet for a game of darts or cards. Enjoy a relaxing break in a typical unspoilt village local. Spreyton is a quiet village with a population of approximately 300 people, a primary school, tennis and cricket clubs and a beautiful church dating from the 14th century. Tom Cobley, celebrated in the folk song describing his fateful journey to Widecombe Fayre, was a considerable landowner in the parish and is buried in the churchyard. The Tavern has a traditional bar with open fire and a snug area where a host of real ales and ciders are served. There is an attractive dining room and an adjoining dining area, which opens onto a beautiful garden with country views. Upstairs on the first floor there are two bedrooms, Room 1 comprises of a double bed and single bed with a private shower room and WC and Room 3 comprises a double bed with an en-suite shower room. On the second floor there are a further three bedrooms, Room 5 comprises of a double and single bed with an en-suite bathroom with an overhead shower, Room 6 comprises of a double bed and has its own private bathroom with an overhead shower and a separate WC and Room 7 comprises of a double and single bed with an en-suite bathroom with shower overhead and a separate WC. All rooms are equipped with wash basins, central heating, Digital TV's with DVD players, radio alarm clocks with CD players, a hair dryer, complimentary toiletries and complimentary Wi-Fi. Home cooked food is served daily, with a separate lunchtime and evening menu available, including a daily specials board. Homemade food is served using as much local produce as possible. Dogs are welcome in the bar and snug areas only. A traditional public house nestled in a pretty country village.

“Great ales, great food, great hosts”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 10, 2013

Only been to the TC a couple of times (tend to go once a year when in the area), but odd as it may sound, the second time we visited, the landlord Roger not only greeted me by name, but remembered which beer my friend preferred. The pub isn't large & at busy times it can be crowded so you may have to wait for a while to eat, but the food is always worth the wait - not the cheapest in the world, but the price is reflected in the quality & offset by reasonable bar prices (and bear in mind the TC has won national pub of the year on more than one occasion). Never actually stayed at the TC, but knowing friends who have, they always come back with glowing reports (not least of which about the extremely generous breakfasts. Overall a solid 5 stars, but as I've said, it can get crowded, the car park is small & there's no bus service, so nominated driver is a must.

“Gem of a find! Will return!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2013

We were planning a celebratory dinner with friends from mid Devon and wanted a place convenient for everyone to meet. So after a quick 'google' we found the Tom Cobley Tavern. A quick read of Trip Advisor reviews was heartening so we booked a table. And weren't we glad we did! This little tavern is neither large nor fancy but it is charming, welcoming, warm, and cosy with a lovely and authentic atmosphere, glowing fire, friendly staff, who greeted us warmly, and excellent food. There was a breath-taking choice on offer from plain fayre to complex dishes and all were beautifully served and delicious! We were even tempted to try dessert despite being pleasantly sated already. All rounded off by coffee in a very cosy traditional Devon inn. A minor niggle is that the volume of the background music was a little loud for my taste and the car park is small so we had to park further along the lane, so be prepared for that at busy times. However, this is a small price to pay for such a lovely venue! We shall certainly return.

“You're not from 'round here”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 1, 2013

I've been to this pub several times for the good and generous food but last time the old bar man seemed to take a great pleasure in making fun of the fact I wasn't a local with a series of snide and sarcastic comments veiled as humour after I asked him to suggest a local ale. Left a sour taste and spoiled the meal. There are plenty of good pubs in Devon that I have visited and will be unlikely to go back.

“Festive break to remember”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2013 via mobile

We stayed at the Tom Cobley Inn for 3 nights over the festive period as a party of five and enjoyed a brilliant stay: a fantastic olde worlde pub, excellent choice of well kept beers and ciders, a wide varying food menu (good portions at realistic prices) and best of all the hosts (Roger, daughters and staff) all of whom were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Accommodation was clean, comfortable and again sensibly priced with excellent views over Dartmoor across to Exmoor. Even the locals were friendly and welcoming. We arrived as strangers and left as friends and cannot wait until our next stay in 2013.

It is easy to see how this pub has won so many awards and could possibly be CAMRA pub of the year when results are announced in February.

Roger, we cannot thank you all enough for your hospitality and advice as to local walks and places to go. We hope 2013 is equally successful for you and look forward to seeing you later in 2013.

Phil & Jan Battersby (and friends)
