Description: The Tom Cobley Tavern is a small country Tavern which serves the parish of Spreyton and the surrounding area. It is the hub of village life; on most evenings locals meet for a game of darts or cards. Enjoy a relaxing break in a typical unspoilt village local. Spreyton is a quiet village with a population of approximately 300 people, a primary school, tennis and cricket clubs and a beautiful church dating from the 14th century. Tom Cobley, celebrated in the folk song describing his fateful journey to Widecombe Fayre, was a considerable landowner in the parish and is buried in the churchyard. The Tavern has a traditional bar with open fire and a snug area where a host of real ales and ciders are served. There is an attractive dining room and an adjoining dining area, which opens onto a beautiful garden with country views. Upstairs on the first floor there are two bedrooms, Room 1 comprises of a double bed and single bed with a private shower room and WC and Room 3 comprises a double bed with an en-suite shower room. On the second floor there are a further three bedrooms, Room 5 comprises of a double and single bed with an en-suite bathroom with an overhead shower, Room 6 comprises of a double bed and has its own private bathroom with an overhead shower and a separate WC and Room 7 comprises of a double and single bed with an en-suite bathroom with shower overhead and a separate WC. All rooms are equipped with wash basins, central heating, Digital TV's with DVD players, radio alarm clocks with CD players, a hair dryer, complimentary toiletries and complimentary Wi-Fi. Home cooked food is served daily, with a separate lunchtime and evening menu available, including a daily specials board. Homemade food is served using as much local produce as possible. Dogs are welcome in the bar and snug areas only. A traditional public house nestled in a pretty country village.

I found this pub / B&B through CAMRA, after noticing it had won Regional pub of the year. It seems to win awards every year, and rightly so. A fantastically huge choice of ales considering it is a small country pub in a remote area. All staff were on hand to give good advice on the ales available. We sat by a lovely wood fire in the main bar before moving into the restaurant to sample food from the extensive menu. Very generous portions of good quality pub food.
We stayed the night as well, the only way to sample 14 ales! The room was well presented with a beautiful view across Dartmoor. Overall, the entire place is immaculate.

Spreyton is a beautiful little village with quaint thatched cottages. We loved the fact that this pub is a hidden gem.

Roger the landlord and all the pub staff were very welcoming and accommodating during our stay. We cannot speak highly enough about this pub and really look forward to staying again.

Highly recommended!

Found this pub quite by chance after turning off the A30. Followed a tiny roadside sign and was delighted by the village setting that it was in. The ambience as you were greeted by the very cheerful and helpful staff was delightful. Exceptional choice of good, real ales and delicious food.

What a great pub! Exceptional welcome from always cheerful staff. Warm, friendly and very tastefully decorated bar, snug and restaurant - which serves an excellent range of local produce and 'in-house' prepared desserts - and I haven't even mentioned to 14 ales and 16 ciders and perries!
The rooms are first class too - clean, well appointed and very well presented.
Nicely situated off the beaten track, but a great location for exploring Dartmoor and some great walks locally if you don't feel like driving anywhere.
Highly recommended!

We recently spent a week in Dartmoor and were recommended this pub by the caretaker of the property we stayed in. We asked for a nice pub, with decent food and not too pricey - which would also be ok with our kids. This pub exceeded all of these expectations - we were given an extremely warm welcome, the staff were wonderful and did not make us feel at all uncomfortable even though many of the others there were obviously regular customers! The menu is extremely extensive and the food well cooked and in generous proportions. They have a plethora of real ales on offer which also went down well. All in all, a great pub - would definitely return if in the area.
