Visited Raft last night and I have to say it has been one of the best meals I have ever had. The food is prepared to perfection and the waiters Mike and Mike were very attentive but not overpowering. The little extras like the goats cheese canape, homemade bread and Lemon drink to clear the palate just added to the already excellent value. We had the early bird menu. This is a hidden little gem which has only been open 12 weeks will undoubtedly when word gets around become very popular and more difficult to get in. Our journey took an hour to get there but it was well worth effort. The restaurant as stated in a previous review is really lovely. We will be visiting again in the near future.

A fantastic new restaurant above the Fishpond Pub- just what was needed in the area. Very tastefully decorated with an intimate feel. The staff were most welcoming and friendly. The menu offers plenty of variety, with lovely vegetarian choices. Nice touches like canapes before the starter and a palate-cleansing lemonade following the main course set the restaurant apart from others. The food was well cooked and nicely presented, with generous portions, making it very good value for money. We were so impressed that we're going again in a fortnight!

This restaurant was recommended to us and did not disappoint. Only open approximately 10 weeks the decor and ambience are lovely. We were offered a pre-starter of a beautiful tiny ball of goats cheese followed by home-baked artisan bread- delicious. Our starter of Asparagus and Crunchy Egg which were cooked to perfection.
The main courses of Chicken and Rump of lamb were outstanding Watch out for the eye-watering lemon palate-refresher which was amazing. The desserts were superb.
The service from Michael our waiter was friendly and attentive. Nothing was too much trouble.
And to top it all it was very reasonably priced.
All together a fantastic experience which we're very happy to recommend Our compliments to all concerned.

This was our first trip to Matlock Bath in around a year, and we noticed that there had been a few changes - not least of which, the new restaurant over The Fishpond had now fully opened.

The Fishpond itself retains a lot of it's quirkiness, tending now to be a little more up-market in the evening and harking back to it's more traditional 'rock music' style during the day. Apparently they still have gigs on here in the evening too, so it might be an idea to book an early sitting if you were planning to visit The Raft, as there might be a risk of dining to a background of rock music.

The restaurant (upstairs) was unrecognisable, but in a very good way. Tasteful and subtle decor with mood lighting, all contributed to a romantic ambience. We were shown to our table, and whilst looking through the menu, the waiter bought out complimentary pea and mint soup/puree which probably had a far more eloquent name, but we were so impressed by the presentation (in a double shot-glass type container) that we weren't really listening!

A complimentary selection of breads followed, which were duly munched. Then it was time for the meal to begin.

For starters,I couldn't resist trying the Wood Pigeon with lentils and garlic, and Samantha had the chargrilled asparagus with walnut and egg dressing. As you can probably see from the dishes alone, this was turning out to be a real dining treat!

For our mains, Samantha had rump of lamb and I had the fish of the day, which on this occasion was black bream. Again, both dishes were astounding, and this was a real a la carte dining EXPERIENCE rather than just a meal!

If there was one niggle, it was that the dessert menu was rather plain compared to the preceeding extravagance. This did not distract from the wonderful meal though, and as the restaurant had only been open for a few weeks, no doubt this will improve over time.

To sum up: honestly? Without a doubt, this was one of the best dining experiences that we had sampled in a long long time. The Raft would not be out of place in the West End, let alone Matlock Bath, and is well worth planning a journey out to.
