“The Hodgkinsons Hotel Matlock Bath, Derbyshire”

We stayed here for the first time last weekend and it was a fantastic experience, the owners were really welcoming and couldn't do enough to make us comfortable, our room was beautiful with everything provided right down to home made biscuits, robes, slippers hair dryer etc., we where even given a pass to put in our car to save us putting it in their car park which was close by but easier for old legs to leave it outside the hotel. Breakfast next morning was perfect in every way, freshly made to order with any number of options. We would recommend this hotel to anybody visiting this part of Derbyshire one couldn't stay in a nicer hotel.

Room Tip: If one has trouble climbing stairs I would ask for a room on the first floor as the hotel being old...

As this was an impulse booking we were delighted with our choice and have to say we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hotel is decorated and furnished beautifully and it really is like stepping back in time, with great attention to detail, even down to the antique room keys! The food was amazing both at dinner and breakfast, with a good selection of wines available and there is also a great variety of drinks available at the beautiful victorian bar.
All in all it has everything you need for a relaxing stay; friendly & welcoming owners, ( Zoe & Chris), clean & comfortable surroundings, great food AND its own cave!
We definitely intend to return.

We stayed in Hodgkinson's Hotel recently, while on a trip to Derby to see The Rams - and it was great!

The hotel itself is beautifully quaint, with old-style furnishings and decor - the rounded glass as you come into the hall is beautiful, and reminiscent of olden days, and olden pubs / shops. At the same time, wifi (free) available throughout the hotel and flat screen televisions keep you well 'up-to-date' in the place.

Zoe and Chris, and all their staff, did everything they could to make us feel at home, completing all the formalities quickly and efficiently, and serving food and drinks with a smile! Without being over-the-top and in your face, as some owners/landlords can be, Zoe and Chris always seemed to have time to have a few words with all the guests, which was really nice. They were also able to arrange tickets for us in the hotel (and at a reduced price!) when we wanted to visit the Heights of Abraham - which was also great!

We ate one night in the town (thanks for the recommendation, Zoe, The Fishpond was indeed very good!) and we ate one night in the hotel itself - which was super, just 4 or 5 tables in a lovely 'intimate' setting, with lovely food, well cooked (by Chris?), with a nice port in the lounge afterwards (very decadent!) and not too far to go to bed! In fact, the food was so good at dinner that none of the 4 of us were able to do full justice to the fantastic breakfast the following morning!

Although ' excellent', which it was, what stopped it being an absolutely perfect, all the way, 5-star stay?? Two small things - one, some of the other guests obviously enjoyed their wine at dinner just a bit too much, and their laughter carried into the adjacent rooms well into the night, and - two, the shower in the bathroom! For big/tall people it's a wee bit tight!! Having said that, neither thing would stop me going back nor do they take away from it being a great place to spend a night or two if visiting Derby/ Matlock.

We have stayed overnight on several occasions as we use it as a base to visit elderly relatives nearby. This is the third hotel/B&B we have tried out in this area and it is far superior to the other two. It was good when we stayed the first time under Diane's management but since Zoe and Chris have taken over it has improved further especially when dining. The rooms are spacious, very clean and well-kept and stylistically very much in keeping with the age of the building. The showers in both of the rooms we have stayed in are on the small side but the water is hot and the water pressure is good - so not a real complaint. On this last occasion, Chris had taken over the cooking and both evening meal and breakfast was beautifully cooked - with a small but selective and imaginative list to choose from at dinner - there is something for everyone,
There is also a good wine selection. Both of the hosts are very friendly and welcoming - I highly recommend this hotel. It's a real gem - slightly on the expensive but definitely worth it. Try it - you will not be disappointed.

We do really appreciate your comments and review as it means a lot to us as we know you have stayed and eaten many times at Hodgkinson's both before we took over and since we took over last May. We know that you travel extensively and stay at many different places so appreciate that you took the time to write and actually tell us how we are doing. Thanks and we look forward to seeing you both the next time you are visiting your family in Derbyshire.

From the minute we walked in we were impressed. The attention to detail in this sympathetically restored Victorian hotel is superb, from the original ledger in the lounge to the tastefully decorated and individually styled bedrooms.
The owners, Zoe and Chris, have gone to great lengths to make this a memorable place to stay.
Our room was lovely and I thought the loose tea and tea pot and the ground coffee and cafetière, made the usual hotel tea tray that little bit special........not to mention the homemade biscuits!
We were joined by other family members during our stay and we had dinner in the restaurant on our first evening. The meal was fabulous and great value at £33 per head for three courses.
A wide choice of menu is also on offer at breakfast time and cooked to your individual specification.
This place is a jewel wedged between several fish and chip shops and amusement arcades, but
I am actually trying to think up an excuse to return again in the near future.

Room Tip: If you have a problems with stairs, choose a room on the first floor. From what I saw they are all l...

I stayed at the Hodgkinson's Hotel for one night with work. We took over the hotel with nearly every room occupied by my colleagues. The rooms are beautiful and have lovely individual features. The owners couldn't have been more helpful, they suggested places for us eat and they offered us help and advice on places for us to go the next day. They even let us use the lounge for a meeting. Breakfast was superb, egg royal is such a treat for a week day and there was so much choice. Perfect place for a romantic break, prices are good, food and drink lovely all topped off with a few ghost stories and a cave.

Have been to this hotel 6 years ago for a 1 night stay. My partner Julia secretly arranged a Valentines weekend break and it was fantastic. The hotel is full of old world charm and decoration. All our meals were wonderful and the attention from Zoe , Chris and the young lady waitress (very sorry, I forgot to ask your name) were perfect. We were very impressed that several young couples were staying there, just goes to show big hotels are not the most beautiful.
Many thanks for a great weekend, Michael.

Room Tip: The Riber. Its great, lots of room and a four poster bed. Several stairs possibly not for the infir...
