Recently stayed here with friends for a long weekend. The rooms were Victorian magic with wonderful antiques and memorabilia. The owners and staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. The breakfasts and evening meals were delicious and imaginative. Perfect hotel in the best of Derbyshire.

Spent 2 nights in the Mayfield Room - very spacious and well apportioned with ensuite - very good views over Matlock Bath and close proximity to the Derwent Gardens where the illuminations are held September to October and great views of the firework displays also held at the same time. Food was of a very good quality - excellent menu and decent wine list, service was very good from a small but extremely friendly team. Hotel very quirky with lots of antiques including a fox under the armchair. Very relaxing atmosphere. Caves at the back of the hotel area are worth a look = this weekend (Haloween) we found mock headstones and a coffin - ask the proprietor Diane to put the lights on for a good viewing.

Had 2 nights in the "riber" room, lovely huge room with period fittings. Great bathroom with stand alone bath. You get the feeling Sherlock Holmes may have just left the building! Nice comfortable lounge with open fire and lots of reading material.
The food is fabulous & thought i might burst after 2 breakfasts and dinners. Fresh local produce and a good choice on the menu. The staff are remarkably friendly & helpful.
A real treat.
A free parking space which in Matlock Bath is essential and a great view for the local firework display right on the doorstep.

stopped here for a one night break with my husband. what can i say this hotel is beautiful, from the moment you step through the front door you feel like you are stepping back in time. we stopped in the riber suite which was fab, the free standing bath in the bathroom was lovely and all the complimentary things such as toiletries etc were great. we didnt have the evening meal but we did have breakfast. the food was lovely. i cant find anything negative to say about this hotel everything was ten out of ten. i shall deffinately be returning here and will be reccomending it.

Having travelled to Matlock Bath by train, we walked to the Hotel from the Railway station
which was very easy and took very little time, it also gave us the chance to see a little of the town.
We were given a warm welcome and although we had arrived early we were able to leave our bags and go out.
Our room was very comfortable and the bathroom had a very good shower, the complimentary toiletries provided were very good indeed.
On Saturday evening we ate dinner in the restaurant which was very pleasant, the food was very good (the home made strawberry sorbet between the starter and the main course was a very nice touch) and we were very well looked after. Breakfast on the Sunday morning was also very good with the same level of service offered.

The Proprieters and all the Staff really took care of us throughout and I would thoroughly reccomend a stay at Hodgkinsons for anyone visiting the area.

Note:
Do ask to see the caverns behind the hotel and do pay attention to the collectables that are placed throughout the Hotel - very interesting.

An absolutely charming and generally well-kept small hotel with a fine restaurant. Our stay would have been perfect had it not been for a boiler failure which meant stone cold water from the ensuite taps and shower throughout our stay, preventing us from properly relaxing (or even basic hygiene really). One could say that these things do happen occasionally, although it's a shame that an establishment of this price bracket doesn't see fit to make adequate provision to guard against such discomfort to its guests. However what really added insult to the experience was the hotel's failure to warn us at a number of face-to-face opportunities, preferring instead to wait until we appeared late and shivering for our dinner booking, before owning up to the boiler failure. Graceless and disappointing.

I booked this hotel as a romantic break for our anniversary. Couldnt have been more perfect. We stayed in the Mayfield suite, it was lovely. The rest of the hotel was stunning. Cannot explain how charming it really was. right from the very first minute we were made to feel welcome by the staff. Our evening meal was perfect. The breakfast was out of this world more choice than you can imagine. Wish we had stayed longer. We will be back.
