“Northern rooms too expensive for what they are”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2012

I spent a night at the Cailler during a seminar and was not fully convinced by this hotel.

As the seminar was organised by my employer I luckily did not have to pay myself for my room and I am unaware of the rate charged to my employer. However the official rates are indicated in each room and the price I saw for my room was far too expensive for what was on offer.

The hotel itself is well located in the little town, with nice views over the region. Another plus side is the direct underground connection to the spa-swimming pool, meaning you could simply walk there from your room in a bathrobe.

The room we were given is located in the "wrong" side of the hotel, i.e. on the northern side. It has no view at all, little sunlight and no balcony. The room is of reasonable size but certainly not large and, although clean, it did not feel particularly crisp or fancy, and some details (some lamps out of orders) were not acceptable for a hotel this category. Nice Nespresso coffee machine in the room but each coffee you make out of it will be charged at a ridiculous price. Oddly enough, the bathroom felt considerably more modern than the room itself and was actually quite good (and very clean).

Staff was professional and polite, but food and drinks were also overpriced.

Overall, the hotel is fine, the rooms on the good side (with view and balcony) might be attractive, but the general level does not justify the official rates.

This hotel has charm and is great for access to the thermal baths in Charmey. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the hotel has nice friendly touches like two playrooms for older kids, and a quiet sitting area on the third floor, with a nice view and plenty of reading material. The evening buffet and breakfast buffet were both very varied and generous!
the hotel was however slightly overpriced and I'm not sure it's worth its 4 stars. For instance, access to the baths was included in our weekend package but the baths were full most of Saturday so we couldn't actually use our pass to the baths on that day. Also, there was a strange lingering smell of fried food in the elevators and passageways. And in the bathroom the ventilation passage provided a good earful of what was happening in the bathroom below...
Still, overall it was a lovely stay in a lovely setting and the baths are very pleasant.

Room Tip: Try to get a south-facing room, they have balconies and views!

My wife, kid and I spent 3 nights in the hotel, hoping to get some peaceful rest. Although the food was good and the spa OK, our room, #231, was on the back of the hotel, right over the delivery door. So every morning we were woken before 8 am by trucks'n'vans backing to that door.

The worst was the last night when the deliveries started at 11pm until 2 am !! When we told the receptionist next morning, she said she'd tell her boss about it. We haven't had a single word/email from the hotel about our complaints.

And of course if you don't want the noisy rooms, you have to pay more to get the silent ones.

Not going back, very disapointed and tired.

We have taken a long week end at the Hotel Cailler and we found the setting beautiful and the service very efficent and very swiss. the premises were spotless and the room not the top but confortable. The staff was quite helpful in advising us about hiking spots. This hotel is connected to the beautiful charmey baths were you can enjoy a magnificent view in a beautiful building. The restaurant is also quite good but a bit expensive. Overall we reccomend this hotel but not to budget travelers. They can find better value in local B&B.

Room Tip: balcony rooms are the one with the best view

The hotel is comfortable but very expensive. The weekend we were there there was a wedding which meant loud music until 3am, and no sleep. We were not warned of this prior to making the booking and given no chance of cancellation. 300 francs (+) is too much for a night of no sleep. Stay in the ibis instead.

The hotel is charming and practical if you go to the Spa, and the Charmey area is very scenic.
However, the hotel facilities are those of a 3 stars and:
- For a double room, our bed was only 140cm, which in most hotels would be the size for a single bed. The matress was very soft and the bed was very low, maybe 60cm above the ground only (to avoid if you have back pain...) .
- Most hotel favours are not complimentary, the coffee from the Nespresso machine is charged CHF3, a dental kit is charged CHF4, etc...
- The restaurants kitchen is only opened until 9pm...which means, that after that time, they do not take orders any more... knowing that the spa closes on weekends at 10pm and that there is not much to do in Charmey in the evening, one would expect that the restaurants are available a little longer...
- As it was an anniversary celebration for us, we booked a room with view on the mountain (and extra cost). If the mountains can be seen, the parking is the first thing you see, if the room is located - like the one we had- on the second floor...
