Spent one night here while travelling. Stay got off to a bad start with the receptionist just handing me a key and pointing to where the room was on the other side of the hotel. I then struggled up to the room carrying two large bags while a number of staff watched on. Our corner room was a good size and but characterless and we could have been in almost any large hotel, rather than an historic building Because the weather was so hot we put the air conditioning on and then left to visit the nearby town. On our return we found the room like a sauna and when we complained to reception, we were told that the air conditioning had been broken for a few days and they were waiting for it to be fixed. By this stage it was too late to find alternative accommodation. Result was that we spent a sweltering night being attacked by mosquitoes as we had to have the windows open to try to cool the room. Breakfast in the morning was a limited buffet and we had to wait around 20 minutes for any staff to appear to provide coffee. In sum a very disappointing stay and I got the impression that the hotel is geared more towards catering for weddings and large events rather than individual travellers. I tried to complain about the poor service to the manager but he could not be found but to the hotel's credit, it did waive the charges for the night's stay.

Room Tip: Check the air conditioning is working if you stay during the summer!

We went as a special treat and spent two nights in mid winter. The castle was burned down and completely rebuilt as a hotel. The attention to detail is excellent in both the building/furnishings and in the service. I think there was only one other couple staying at teh time.

The decor is all in the style of olde castle and looks solid and attractive. The staff were always well mannered and made us feel special. We spent our days wandering the district, the nearby villages and forests.

The meals were the best. breakfast was made just for us, no menu but our attendant simply offered "I think sir would like a...." and so on. Dinner was a feast taste and performance, consisting of many small courses, each one introduced and requiring changes of cutlery. We simply felt very special here.

We missed a booking last year due to flooding. This "unfinished business" was the excuse to return to Slovenia for a special anniversary.

On entering the castle we were greeted by an eager young man who happily grabbed the baggage and led us down the imposing corridor and up the external glass lift to our room.

Our quarters were sumptuous and luxuriant and heated against the fridge-like outdoors. The bathroom housed a spa as well as nice extras of tissues, make-up mirror and heated floor and towel rack.

For our evening meal we dined in the smaller cosy dining room with the crypt-type ceiling (the hunters' room?) Our table was near a glowing fireplace and romantically decorated.

After browsing the menu we selected the tasting menu with about 10 courses. I highly recommend this. Every item was exquisite in flavour and presentation. Even foods which I'd not usually select - such as the course of "three kinds of crayfish" - were delectable. Local and tradition produce Inspired most of the dishes. Mushrooms, nuts, berries, duck, venison and types of pate and cheese, I recall as major components.

Our downfall was capacity. With two courses to go, we were close to bursting - yet not going to skip dessert. The tiny apple short-cake,or such, in part of the dessert, was the most mouthwatering I've ever tasted.

To the chef's credit, we suffered no ill-affect from our gluttony and slept soundly.

Breakfast was back in this room one morning, and then in the larger dining room the next. Service was each time friendly and professional and the table set with a gold rose or a sprig of pink berries. We felt completely indulged and liked the offer to cook our breakfast eggs as we wished and the trays of mini pastries and varieties of bread placed for us on our table. Also there was a tray of fresh fruit to choose from. Our coffee was made fresh for us as desired.

During the day we explored on foot - along the icy footpath through the woods, following the river until crossing a bridge to the village and then uphill over the motorway and the surrounds.
There is a very pleasant pizzeria here, which we returned to for a late lunch, but then had to make our way back in the dark. The reward for this was seeing the castle all lit up in various colours from outside, and discovering blazing torches and lines of candles illuminating the way through the inner courtyard.

Room Tip: Our room looked out onto the island with water both sides - it was beautiful. My only complaints were temporary. I was disturbed by noisy water pipes in the bathroom, which we fixed by adjusting. Also there was initially a drains-type odour in there. Luckily this faded so it may have been from being closed up. The drains functioned fine.

As we walked into the castle it was as though we were entering medieval times - the castle is beautiful! Torches light the path in the courtyard, stone walkways and the room decor coninues the theme of a true castle. We checked in late in the day and headed to dinner at the restaurant which was delightful! Not to mention, the service was superb. After a lovely meal we headed across the bridge and the street (watch out - cars go quickly across that drive) to the gas station up the hill for a bottle of wine to enjoy in our room. The next day we woke up to a nice breakfast and then enjoyed the grounds before departing on our journey. While it was very romantic in the chilly February, it would be lovely to come back in the summer and enjoy the courtyard and grounds a little more.

Room Tip: the room we stayed in was fabulous - just ended up with it but it was great!

The little castle is in a amazing place: river, parks, swans, (the only problem is it is near the road and you can see the gasoil station, cars...)
The decoration is so good thinked: the furniture is the minimalist version of the old tipic castle furniture
The people are very kind I have to said that the 2 men in the reception have been the most helpful and nice than you can expect.
The kids can take fun in the opposit side of the road where they can play tennis, football, basket, ping pong
The restaurant is very good too.
