“Fantastic days at Walaker”
Reviewed August 30, 2013

A group of 39 folkdancers from Symra in Oslo spent four fantastic days at Walaker hotell and in Solvorn. The hotel og the surroundings were excellent for us. We use to have a "mountain tour" every year, and this one was one of the best ever. Both because of the warm hospitality at the hotel, the fine weather og the trips we had to Urnes stave church, to Nigardsbreen og the mountain top Molden og the guided tour in Solvorn by "gamal-lensmannen". We stopped over one night at Solvorn. Friendly service from arrival and through our stay. Our room in the old building was at the "back side" facing the old barn and the mountains behind. The room had a very good bed and nice furnishings. We had an excellent dinner based on local products topped by grilled halibut as the main course and apple crumble based on apples from the hotel garden for desert. Since we were not too enthusiastic towards the wine recommendations we looked in the wine list and found a very good Bordeaux white at a good price. Excellent, typical Norwegian breakfast buffet with freshly baked bread and a very good selection of cheese, fish and meat cuts. Solvorn is nice for easy and more challenging walks. If you arrive by car from the East or are heading East after your stay it's well worth taking the Ornes ferry and visiting the old wooden Urnes Church from around 1130 and listed on UNESCO's World Heritage list.

This hotel is amazing..... great view, wonderful small village, fantastic 5-star restaurant. Great dinner. The breakfast menu is amazing and is included in its price. The staff is wonderful and very friendly. The small village is so quaint and beautiful. We had fresh raspberries from and small farm in the village on a walk.

It's a little gem in the beautiful town of Solvorn. We only had a night stay at Walaker. The room is well maintained and there are many antique furnishings especially at the main building/reception. There's a small beach right in front of the hotel and it was brimming with locals during summertime. The scenery was undoubtedly captivating. However, there were VERY limited food choices in town. There's a cafe nearby which closing time was 7pm, turned us down before 6.30pm. We went back to the hotel to ask if we can still book for their dinner, and they told us it's full. We had no other options but to go back to the cafe and grabbed a few slices of cold bread and cakes. Sadly it turned out to be our most miserable night in Norway. And the next morning, our misery continued with the mistake by the hotel staffs in communicating the glacier bus time; we missed the bus but fortunately a staff named Stefan helped us in sorting things out, so in the end we managed to take a taxi to Jostadelsbreen however at much higher rate. Oh, and there was an excellent array of breakfast! Despite our personal experience at Walaker, we still think it's a wonderful place to visit.

We only stayed at the Walaker one night on our driving journey through the Fjord Lands of Norway. However, it was a little gem tucked away from the highways and the rail lines. It is an historic hotel and has been in the same family for over 400 years, so lots of history and lovely antique furnishings. It is situated across the water from the oldest stave church in Norway at Urmes and the trip across is definitely worth the time. We were fortunate in having a booking for dinner which started with Proseco in the pretty front garden followed by an exquisite 5 course meal with wine parings. It would definitely be easy to stay more nights as there are walking trails in the area and as the sun was shining the day we were there, the small beach was brimming with sun bathers. Jotunheiman national park, with spectacular above treeline hiking, is about a 60 minute drive away. We were in one of of the modern rooms which was very spacious and well appointed.

We enjoyed our stay at the Walaker. We stayed in the older part of the hotel and i highly recommend it. The view and setting was wonderful.

We also loved the breakfast provided as part of the cost of the room. The only negative was although the location was beautiful, there are only limited food options in town. We thought the dinner at the Walaker was extremely overpriced for what you get even in light of the fact that it is Norway. Also thought that the hotel staff were often so busy with the restuarant that it was difficult to impossible to get answers to hotel related questions during the time the restuarant was open.

Room Tip: stay in the old part of the hotel

Fantastic accommodations all around. The Walaker Hotell is beautiful and impeccably maintained. This place is spotless. It is in a postcard-perfect location. The room was the most comfortable of any I stayed in during my trip to Norway (in the new building: quiet, large room with two beds, couch, desk and porch) and the bathroom/shower was extremely nice. The staff provided exceptional service and were all very knowledgable, personable and pleasant while serving absolutely delicious meals. Best breakfast in Norway!

Room Tip: Stayed in the new building which is absolutely lovely.
