“You will need a car !”
Reviewed October 14, 2013

We recently had a couple of nights at Villa Castiglione, which we used as a base from which to visit Florence. As some other reviewers have mentioned, it is hard to find. Our Tom Tom got completely confused. I think the problem is putting in the address as Impruneta. They should add coordinates on the hotel profile !!

Once you do find the hotel, you can reset your GPS and there will be no further problems.

We picked this hotel because the rooms looked nice, there was parking and it looked relatively easy to get into Florence from there. On all three counts the hotel was good.

The hotel building is beautifully restored and the rooms are large, a little unusually decorated, but delightful. I think some of the rooms must have a view all the way to Florence, ( we did not have a room on that side ) so ask for one of those !!

The place is primarily a functions centre, so the staff tend to be focused on the function if there is one on. However, that did not bother us.

It is a short drive down the hill to the closest town ( sorry have forgotten the name ), and there is free parking there, and buses to Florence for 1.4 euro. We had a very nice dinner at a Restaurant there, called Vera Napoli. Great service and reasonable prices .... try it.

You cannot get a hotel in Florence anywhere near as good as Villa Castiglione for the rates they charge. If you have a car and don't need to be in the centre, then we recommend this hotel.

Two other points to note are firstly that there is no lift, and secondly that the breakfast is pretty standard Italian fare, but nice and in an excellent dinning room.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of Florence.

I was in Villa Castiglione for a long week end. I recommend the hotel for the location, the rooms and the availability of the people, they are really nice and for sure i would go back there. But i have also to be objective about how to reach it.The hotel provides a shuttle bus from the hotel to the nearest bus stop. The Shuttle bus runs twice per day, in the morning at 10 and in the evening at 18 to go back to the hotel. When we arrived, let's say around 15,the receptionist was so kind to give us a lift to the bus stop to go to visit Firenze. But the problem is in the evening. The hotel is on a little hill, from the bus stop to the hotel you need to climb for 2 km in the complete darkness when you go back.So we took everyday a taxi to go back, since we were coming back after 10 p.m. I also asked info to the hotel before booking the room, but the answer that i got was that a bus was available, without the full information that from the bus stop to the hotel there is not a easy way.

I went to a wedding the place was awesome, the rooms are amazing! Everything was so very nice untill dinner time..... The food was terrible cold primi piatti, no salt, raw eggplant on our pasta really disgusting, the meat was cold and hard to eat... The only good thing was the salad.. And the wine! So if you plan to go to villa castiglione to get married my suggestion is to have a catering from the outside!

My wife and I needed a place to stay to explore Florence and the hotels in Florence were very expensive. This was very affordable, had delicious breakfast and was an old monastery on top of a hill overlooking florence. The pool was great after a hot day in Florence and the tram at the bottom of the hill was perfect to get us in to florence for 1.20 euro each. We just parked in the free parking at the coop.

Would definitely stay there again although it is quite difficult to get into Florence before 10 which made walking around very hot

It is not perfect but there are many very good points. The hotel is very charming, unique, with lots of character, and is set on an idyllic hill featuring undulating vistas packed full of olive groves with beautiful views of Florence and the the Tuscan countryside. It has a pool, which is very useful when the weather gets hots in the summer. The rooms are very large and have all the basic requirements covered, and the service I found to be excellent - the staff and very helpful and friendly. It is quite close to Florence - a taxi back from piazza Republica in the very centre costs 21 euros. A cab from the southern edge of the city walls costs about 15 euros. We took the bus into town which is about a 25 minute walk down the hill in Bottai, costing 2 euros, which is fine as you can soak up the views. The negative aspects were the breakfast, which only had basic croissants, brioche which tasted stale, cold hard boiled eggs and processed ham and cheese. It could be improved by offering fresh bread, pastries, a toaster, and cooking omelettes and pancakes fresh to order. I also got bitten a lot in the room (the windows were hardly opened), some of which became very swollen, some kind of gauze or mesh fitted to the windows could prevent this. Overall though, a very beautiful, relaxing, and enjoyable place to stay and base yourself for a visit of Florence and Tuscany.

This converted old church is not what you would think from the outside. Driving up looks like a beautiful old church seen all over Italy. Inside has been converted to two floors and decorated in a splendid mix of modern art paintings and glass. Lot of gold leaf with bright colours in the furniture and handmade tiles in bathroom gave it feeling of modern glamour. Rooms were very good only drawback was the very narrrow roads up a mounainside to reach it.

Room Tip: Every room has slightly different decor although still in the same theme. We had a room at the end o...

I'm a very experienced traveller in general, and an experienced traveler in Italy by car, motorcycle and hoofing it. Yes, you definitely need a car or motorcycle, and yes even probably a GPS or similar navigational device because it is a hotel annexed to a church - nobody will know the hotel name, everyone knows the church. This is NOT a hotel for the inexperienced, but if you are willing to go a little bit out of your way, this is a HUGE reward. Excellent: room, bathroom, restaurant, view, staff friendliness. Average: proximity to Firenze (you have to drive), pool is basically for wading but it is seriously nice to have in the summer heat nonetheless. Bummer: access to Internet was patchy, but then again the hotel is in an idyllic spot so you have to expect that there will be a "rural" element, and if you REALLY need Internet access basically all of Firenze is wired for free. Overall exccellent, and I'm definitely going again.

Room Tip: All of them are excellent and nicely decorated. Get one facing the rear so you avoid any noise from...
