We recently stayed in this hotel as my friend got married in Florence. We booked the hotel independently (i.e. we did not take one of the rooms that my friend had reserved for family and friends) and were quoted one price. But when the reservation team at the hotel discovered we would be staying there as part of the wedding party, they tried to hike the price up! Fortunately we dug our heels in and managed to keep the original price quoted.
We went out of season (early October), but the hotel felt very isolated and abandoned, and it felt like they had specially opened just to let us stay. There was dust in the bathroom and the shower door did not shut properly, so every time we showered it caused a flooded floor. For the expensive price quoted I would expect a decent television, yet there was an old malfunctioning Grundig stuck in the corner. I asked at reception if they had an iron I could use but was told there was not one, and that was that! This caused a problem as we had travelled from the UK with our wedding clothes in our suitcase and they needed an iron before the ceremony the next day. Being as the hotel is at the top of the hill and there were no shops nearby, there was nothing we could do.
My friend held her wedding reception at the hotel. The aperitif and snacks served were very good quality, however the wedding breakfast itself left a lot to be desired. Also, there was wedding cake left over at the end of the night. Instead of offering it to the guests or the bride and groom, it was taken to the kitchen to be 'thrown away'. It was with some displeasure that the chef then wrapped it in tin foil when I asked if we could have it.
The breakfast the following morning also left a lot to be desired. There was simply not enough food put out for the number of guests present. We had to request more bread, pastries, ham and cheese. People had flights to catch and ended up going away hungry as the extra food never arrived.
The staff were not over friendly or helpful, and sometimes it felt like they were doing us a favour just by being there.
The rooms were noisy as the air con pipes amplified any noise in other rooms, so we could sit and listen to other guest's conversations.

Room Tip: Children under 5 are free in parent's bed, so don't get roped into paying for a 'family...

We stayed at this hotel for a long weekend with friends. We rented a car as we knew that you can't get to this hotel easily. We got lost getting to the hotel as its not easy. I recommend that you rent a car and take your Euro Sat Nav with you. The location was great for us as we didn't want to stay in the middle of Florence city. We wanted to be outside of the city with nice tuscany typical views and this hotel hit the jack pot!

Its an abbey converted to a hotel. The rooms are big with awesome views and each decorated with different themes. The rooms are very colourfully decorated with golden mirrors! The hotel is located on top of a hill with awesome views. I think it was around 15 minutes drive to Florence and there is no restaurant or bar around hotel and you need to drive to get to any food. The hotel was very quiet and low on staff. The breakfast was basics but not bad. The only annoying thing was that there was only one person working at the breakfast room and the kitchen seemed to be far away. So when one person asks for coffee he disappears for 5 minutes and others have to wait. Also, there is only one long table at the breakfast room and all have to share one table. The rest of the hotel was pretty much closed but we walked around and it seems to be great rooms for functions such as weddings. If there is a restaurant in this hotel, it was closed during our stay.

All and all, if you want a quiet hotel with great hills around for walk, this is it. If you want to visit Florence or get around without a car this hotel wouldn't be high on list to recommend!

We just came back from Italy.
We spent our honeymoon all around, especially tuscany, but San Paolo della Croce was something special. We really highly recommend it.The place is wonderful. A green park all around a completely well restored monastery with Florence under your feet. The service was kind and everything was very good. At the arrival, we found a complimentary bottle of champagne just because we told them we were honeymooners and they gave us an incredible room with a breathtaking view.It was a pity we had to leave because we planned a long trip, but that place is still inside our hearts.
