We arrived in Montalcino later than expected and our host offered to phone a restaurant and book for us. This was his first recommendation as it offered both pizza and more traditional Italian restaurant fare. We had an excellent night - at very reasonable cost - and with stellar wine (Brunello - Poggio Salvi) to accompany. One night we had the pizza option and the other night the traditional antipasta / primo / secundo etc. Both were very good indeed. The waiting staff were friendly, attentive, the food was excellent and the place was buzzing with people. A great experience!

We found Il Grifo while strolling Montalcino in Tuscany, north of Sant'Antimo abbey (in Crete or Val D'Orcia region, south of Siena). Although it was 2 pm during siesta time, they served us. Ask to be seated in the back by the open window overlooking countryside - breathtaking. I can't believe I ate almost the whole pizza by myself (I never do that!): crisp thin crust, fresh olives, arugula ("rocket"), tomatoes and artichokes hearts with buffalo mozzarella. My hubby enjoyed pork loin with spinach. Great cold glass of beer ("freddo biere"). They didn't rush us out. I think you have to park just outside city walls but the walk isn't too far. Enjoy! Mangia!

One day in Tuscany we planned on eating at Monte Olivetto but on the way there discovered it was closed on the day of the week that we planned on eating there. We then decided to find somewhere else to eat and place after place was closed on that particular day. As we neared 10 PM (and after a harrowing sidetrip down a dirt cliff road) we made our way into the center of Montalcino and found the first place that looked like it had a good menu selection .... that place was Il Grifo.

Our meal was superb and, despite us being the second to last table seated (the last table being some other stragglers who we saw and shared stories with and then told them we had decided to eat at Il Grifo), our service was great and the food was consistently good from 1st course to last. The restaurant is fairly small and the food, while simple, is well-prepared. There are no views of anything, but the prices are excellent.

The pizza was good and the pastas extremely good as well as very typical of the cuisine in that area. Our entire family of 5 each had appetizers (plus 2 extra appetizers for the table) and entrees (plus an extra entree for the table). In addition, we shared a liter of house red wine, had 3 liters of water, and shared 2 desserts and the entire bill was 110 euros (all charges included). They were kind and helpful throughout the meal and the restaurant was frequented by many locals who were just getting off of work. We would return again without a second thought. Sometimes the best meals are the ones you don't plan after all.

We chose to eat at the Il Grifo based on Trip Advisor positve reviews and we found they were spot on. The restuarant has an extensive menu of typically regional dishes and piizzas. We chose piizza and found they were as good as any we had eaten throughout our Italian tour. The service was friendly and very efficient. The wine list was extensive and catered for all tasts and budgets.
