Grand Hotel Cadenabbia
Reviewed November 4, 2012

Our stay in this hotel was part of a Riviera Travel Tour. The Hotel is very big, but there is a lift to all floors, a bit slow but that should be expected when the hotel is full. Our room was very small and dark, possibly at one time part of a stairwell and hallway, no view. 4 steps down to the bathroom and bed up a metal and glass stairway. This we did not mind as it was very different. It was also very quiet, something we really appreciated. Not suitable for anyone who has problems with stairs. The food was very good and the resturant on the 5th floor had wonderful views of the lake. Drinks were very expensive a 750ml bottle of water was 4 euros as was fruit juice and wine at 20 euros. There is a very nice bar on floor 4 serving drinks and coffees. No entertainment, but that didnt matter to us as we went out early.

We had a wonderful two-night stay. The Junior Suite we were upgraded to was delightful... We are already trying to figure out when we can come back and stay longer. we had an excellent view from our balcony, and the ferry dock was close-by. The food in the restaurant was very good as well. Thank you so very much... Also the staff was very nice to us. The night person on-duty our last night was more than helpful in helping us plan our drive to Venice, also making sure we had a snack before we left in the early-morning... We found the hotel delightful!

Room Tip: The two-level Junior Suite was newly renovated and very contemporary... the bath and shower especial...

We stayed here for a week as part of a Riviera Travel tour. It's a lovely hotel, huge and very grand. The entrance, reception and seating area is lovely and quite peaceful to sit and read in your spare time. Our room was large and basic with two 'Queen' beds pushed together and very comfortable. The bathroom was large with a bath but the shower was placed half way up the wall so you couldn't stand under it. After busy days though we enjoyed relaxing in a deep, hot bath so couldn't complain. Cleaners tidied the room/supplied new towels daily.

The hotel is designed to accommodate coach parties and therefore has an extremely large dining room but it's tastefully laid out and there is an assortment of table sizes to suit everyone but they were mainly laid out for couples. The breakfasts are the same each day - mainly continental with plenty of fruit, cheeses/hams etc, a small amount of hot food, fresh bread and pastries. The dinners were delicious and plentiful. The starter was a large buffet of help yourself salads, then we were served with a choice of soup or two pasta dishes, then a choice of one fish or two meat dishes. We then helped ourselves to desert of which there was a large choice. The food was delicious and we couldn't fault it.

Unfortunately everyone wanted to go for dinner at the same time which created a long queue for the salads but otherwise the service was generally speedy. We did learn to go for dinner as early as possible to avoid the queue and to actually have a choice of deserts before they all went. Drinks were not part of the package. There was an extensive wine list but the cheapest bottle of wine was 19 euros. We were not allowed to buy just a glass of wine but could keep the bottle going for each evening. The bottles of Italian beer were 5 euros each and a large bottle of water 4 euros.

The hotel is next to only a few shops and part of a very small village although it is a pleasant 30-45 minute walk to the nearest town. The hotel is right on the lake side and some of the rooms do have a lake view (we looked over the gardens with mountains in the distance). There are two ferry stops so that you can visit other parts of the lake directly from the hotel. There is also a bus stop outside the hotel to travel either way along the lake.

Overall a very comfortable and pleasant stay looked after by very efficient and friendly staff.

Room Tip: A lake view room would be nice to have.

Like other reviewers, we stayed here whilst on a Riviera tour, which was excellent. The hotel is greatly used by tour groups; whilst we were there there were two other Riviera groups as well as others from Germany and Ireland. Our room, at the back of the hotel, had no view, also no noise as front rooms have. It was adequately but sparsely furnished, with a tv rescued from a museum...two channels, a local one and BBC news....a shower with no enclosure so impossible to shower properly, inadequate heating and a really annoying fire alarm which flashed frequently through the night. Food was ok, buffet style breakfast with frequent shortages, dinner buffet starter which had a long queue and again, items not replenished when finished....for the price we paid for the tour, good enough, but not if you were paying normal rates. Cheapest bottle of wine was around 19 euros, gin and tonic 7.50 euros in the bar. Good and friendly staff made this hotel ok for the week we were there. Free wi-fi but so weak you had to virtually sit on the reception desk to get anything at all!

Room Tip: The rooms seem to vary a lot, may be worth checking a few.

We have recently stayed in this hotel as part of a tour group (Rivera Tours) from Ireland. We found the hotel and its amenties to be of an excellent standard. the food was part of the package and it was absolutely gorgeous, we could not fault it. overall we would say it was one of the nicest hotels we have ever stayed in and we would be well travelled. we would highly recommend to anyone.

Overall, this hotel is beautiful and excellent value.
You have to remember that this is the continent, not London, so the rooms arent massive or luxurious but they do have balconys with views of Lake Como so i know where id rather be..
The only issue with this was no tea or coffee making facilities.
Having never done mainland Italy before, we were keen to try the sceneic lakes and werent dissappointed.
This hotel is in the quieter town of Cadenabbia but overlooks the beautiful town of Bellagio so the views across the lake are stunning as this is the view you get, however obviously the opposite is also true, so when your in Bellagio, you are looking at the slightly plainer Cadenabbia and Bellagio is only a 5 minute ferry ride from a terminal a few hundred yards from the hotel.
We had the 1/2 board option and assumed we would eat out a couple of nights but didnt need to, the food is excellent.
The buffet breakfast is really good and fresh and the evening meal is 4 courses, starting with a huge salad buffet followed by 3 choices each for the next 2 courses (a pasta/risotto and a meat/fish) and finished with a big choice of desserts, yes it consists of the usual terimisu and pastries but they are really very good.
Wine, i also expected to be expensive but a decent gavi de gavi came in at around 18 Euros and a Valpolicella coming in at 20Euros a botte, also a nice touch is if you dont fancy the full bottle on a night, they just tag it to your room and keep it until the following night for you.
The hotel has a tiny swimming pool but a lovely sun terrace, again overlooking the Lake so we ended up having 3 days just lounging around, soaking up the sun and chilling which we didnt expect to do.
Please remember as well, this hotel doesnt do a shuttle so if your coming from Milan airport, you will need a private taxi at aroung 240 Euros return as no shuttle buses visit Cadenabbia.
All in all, a wonderful holiday and we will return and use this hotel but my 1 niggle was when checking out, there was a storm that halted connection and it took 2 further attempts to get a connection and pay the bill, however, upon my return to the UK i discovered my money had been taken twice.
Emails to the hotel went unanswered and calls had a language barrier so it took my bank to eventually sort the issue out but this slight niggle wont put me off returning.

Room Tip: Pay the extra and have a balcony facing the Lake. Buy your room drinks at the local supermarket, th...

Our room wasn't of the highest standard we have experienced for a 4-star hotel. The floor was wooden and the furniture in the room consisted of a metal table for a dressing table with no mirror in front and no stool although there was a chair nearby. The bedside also had small tables rather than cabinets. The only drawers were two inside the wardrobe.

Nevertheless, the bed was fantastically comfortable and it's saving grace was we had a view of Lake Como. No balcony but doors which opened with wrought iron across. Lovely to open and see the view. The room was very clean.

The food was really nice and plenty of it. The restaurant looked over the lake at the top of the hotel.

The staff were very helpful.

Room Tip: We were at the front on the third floor and never heard the road at all during the night. I would r...
