“Lovely holiday”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

We had some fears about staying at this hotel after reading previous reviews but should not have worried.

The location of this hotel is ideal. We had a deluxe room overlooking the mountains. Room was clean and large and had a great, large flat screen TV with loads of English channels. Beds were comfortable. Bathroom was clean and large with a good shower. Air conditioning did not work too well but as we were at the back of the hotel we were able to have the window open and heard little outside noise. Housekeeping was done every day and clean towels were left during the week. The room and bedroom looked as if they had been recently refurbished and the only thing to let the bathroom down were the cheap shower enclosure doors which kept falling off their runners. This also happened to our friends who were staying at the hotel in another room. The room was quiet and we did not hear any noise from other rooms.

All staff, bar a few in the dining room, were extremely friendly, helpful and cheerful. They all worked extremely hard although it appeared that they were quite understaffed at times. The bar staff worked very hard and had so much to do that sometimes the bar was left unattended for up to 20 mins at a time.

We did not find the downstairs bar to be dark and dismal, just a little dated. Drinks could be taken to the roof terrace. Choice of drinks was good. Gin and tonic was fine as was Campari and also sparkling wine. White wine did not taste very nice. Choice of lager or dark beer. Entertainment was a little dated. Just a man playing the organ on several nights.

Breakfast was OK with a hot choice between 8 and 9. Had lunch a couple of days and this was good.
Choice at dinner was very good. We had steak, swordfish, fish from the lake, lovely homemade pizza, soup, salad. All food was fresh and well-cooked. My husband had the best ribs he has ever tasted. Home made trifle, tiramisu and crème caramel were good and the many flavoured ice creams were lovely, particularly the butterscotch flavour.

We made our own way from Milan Malpensa airport by getting the free shuttle from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 then the Malpernsa Express train to Sarrono, change of train at Sarrono to Lake Como Nord (last stop) and then walk out of the station over the road to catch the C10 bus (direction Colico) which stops at Cardanabbia just outside the hotel. It is very simple but takes a few hours, particularly on a Sunday. The bus drivers are very helpful and will tell you where to get off. A taxi or transfer from the airport would have cost 170 euros but by doing it on our own it only cost 12 euros per person for the entire trip. make sure you get the train ticket at the ticket office before you travel and buy the tickets for both train journeys. Don't forget to validate each ticket in the machines before you get on each train.
We also got the free hotel boat to Bellagio but you need to book this the day before you want to go. We visited Varenna by boat and walked up to the castle. We also visited Villa Carlotta and Villa Balbianello which was outstanding. The best way to get to this villa is to get the C10 bus to Lenno, walk down the road to the lake and get the taxi boat to the villa entrance. We did the Greenway Walk from just outside the hotel to Colonna and visited Como including the steep funicular for stunning views. We booked the Bernina Express train trip into Switzerland at the hotel Cannot recommend this trip enough.

The weather was in the high 20's during our stay but it did rain all day on the Sunday.

Overall we had a fantastic holiday and would return to this hotel again

Room Tip: Rooms at the back have views of the mountains and are quieter.

Actually second worst. A number of years ago my husband & I walked out of a dreadful hotel in Paris.

We went to this hotel in Cadennabia as a group of three couples through Mistral holiday group. After a diversion to Parma airport we arrived after midnight very weary. We checked in at reception with a member of staff who had difficulty finding our names . We had to lift the sheet and find our own names. We noticed later in the week he was a waiter in the dining room.

We proceeded to our rooms which could only be described as 'box rooms'. They were so small we had to put one case on top of the fridge and the other in the small bathroom. There was not even a full size wardrobe only two half size cupboards to store clothes in. Another couple who was on the trip went straight up to reception to complain and were offered a bigger room. The next day we complained and were told that as the hotel was full we could not get moved and to check again the following day. After two nights in the 'box' we were moved rooms. The next room was bigger but not much better.

We had partial view of the lake and a better view of a building site. Noise from 7.30am with builders on the roof. We couldn't even open the curtains. A trap door was in the ceiling in the room. I don't know what type of equipment was above but it was
extremely noisy. Sleep impossible night and day! The beds were made daily, bathroom given a speedy wipe. The floors were not touched. Never once saw the corridors being cleaned.

At meal times it was difficult to get a clean table. The food was eatable but the wine certainly not drinkable.
After the evening meal it was impossible to get a seat in the top foyer the only alternative was to get a seat down in the 'entertainment room'. This room was dull and dismal with terrible entertainment.

The only plus for this hotel is that they had pleasant staff working under difficult circumstances. Both the dining room and reception were extremely understaffed. Day and daily I saw visitors queue up to make complaints. Particularly about their rooms.

This was an hotel I would never return to nor recommend.

Despite the above we enjoyed the area and the sights around lake como.

Faded grandeur or just shabby - it depends on your perception. The staff work hard and do their best but there is a lot for them to do. The food service area is definitely way too small. But when I die and go to heaven the bar there will hopefully be staffed by gorgeous girls like Elisa and Holly :)

We have just returned from a Shearing`s 10 day all inclusive visit to this hotel. We had a fantastic driver in Paul, who was also very knowledgeable about the area we travelled through. As usual there were lots of moans about small rooms etc., but just upgrade if you want better! For the price we paid we were quite happy with our small room, 341, it was cleaned every day and towels changed if we put them in shower. Our bed wasn`t changed whilst we were there but I don`t change mine every two or three or days at home either! The décor in the dining room and entrance area was lovely but the seating in the lounge was inadequate for the amount of people there were in the hotel. It looked very nice and was in keeping with the rest of the hotel but inadequate! Now to the only thing I could gripe about, the food. Breakfasts weren`t too bad, lunch was brilliant but I found the evening meal overcooked and the vegetables disgusting. I know it`s difficult with the amount of people staying in the hotel but I`ve stayed in big hotels before and with a buffet style meal you shouldn`t have to have the mush we were served as vegetables. We went on the Bernina express and that was wonderful, we also used the car ferry over to Bellagio and also did the day ticket, backwards and forwards which we really enjoyed. Also the Noddy train, although we got a bit shaken and stirred, we enjoyed that too on numerous occasions. The lido was lovely and we relaxed there a number of times. It`s worth mentioning the supermarket up the side street, don`t forget to buy your bus tickets there in advance for any trips you want to make! All in all it was a good holiday, made better by nice weather most of the time. Wine was moaned about as well but the red, after two or three glasses, was o.k.!!!! The staff, on the whole, were very helpful and polite, especially one girl, didn`t get her name, in the dining room, she usually asked if we wanted water and wine before our meal, lovely smile!! Bar staff were efficient and mainly friendly, it can`t be easy with a load of "elderly" folk who can`t remember what they want and then get all mixed up with their orders, I class myself in that category!! The scenery all around and on trips and journey there and back on coach was stunning, especially through Switzerland. Very enjoyable trip.

Room Tip: Rooms at back are small but adequate.

We would rate this hotel 3 star plus full of old fashioned Italian charm , well worth paying the extra for a lake view bedroom the village of Bellagio on the other side of the lake , all staff were very pleasant and helpful , food was good buffet style. We were on an all inclusive style coach holiday , the queue for the bar in the evening can be long but the bar staff are very efficient , No tea or coffee facility in room so take your own travel kettle!!. TIP: There is also a good little super market round the corner just turn left outside the hotel and then first left and its on your right.Take trip on the lake with a guide well worth it to see the millionaires properties , there are also some nice walks , nice location.Worth doing a trip to St.Moritz on the Bernina Express over the mountains ,

Room Tip: We were in room 436 very good view worth the extra charge , bathroom rather small no shelf space for...

This hotel survives on its location and the patronage of Shearings. My bedroom was poor and as a single traveller I was denied upgrade to a 'better' room both by Shearings and by the hotel, despite offering to pay.

I stayed for a week and had a wonderful holiday because the weather was great and I spent minimal time at this hotel. My one white towel was not changed for the entire week and neither was my bedding. The corridors between my room and the stairs contained old broken furniture that looked like it had come from a junk shop.

Food was plentiful but of poor quality and the dining experience was reminiscent of a school canteen. The subterranean bar was even worse, totally lacking in any feature or atmosphere.
I almost loved the sun terrace but it didn't get cleaned until late morning so if you took your morning coffee up there it was full of dirty glasses, fag ends and sticky tables from the night before. Added to this, many of the chairs had holes in and the floor tiles were broken and dangerous. If you sat up there in an evening you had to bring your rationed drinks up two floors from the horrible bar, after queueing for varying lengths of time to get them.

The owners of this hotel need to seriously up their game and Shearings (if they aren't also the owners) should put pressure on them to do so. Lake Como is absolutely beautiful. Grand Hotel Britannia Excelsior is absolutely not.
