We spent one night at this hotel as we traveled up from the Amalfi Coast. Rather than stay in Rome the night before our flight out of Italy, we chose to stay in Artena, about a 45 minute drive from the Rome FCO airport. After spending 3 weeks in Italy, this was a highlight of our trip. This boutique hotel has only 5 rooms and is family owned. I had booked this through booking.com, and was contacted directly by the hotel about 3 weeks before our arrival date letting me know there was going to be a festival in town the night of our arrival and the streets would be closed and parking would be a challenge. They kindly offered to meet us at a place where we could park for free, at our convenience and would take us to the hotel. They met us in the afternoon and Maria welcomed us and told us some of the history of Artena, mentioning it has been used in movie sets and they still have Princess that resides in the palace. She shared about her village with such passion, you couldn't help but fall in love with the town that is filled with old stone steps.
The hotel pictures online don't do it justice...it has tons of character and has been restored to a very high standard with modern amenities. They had a baby crib ready for our 11 month old son and recommended a restaurant (about a 2 min walk from the hotel - seemed to be the only restaurant in the old town) - Locanda de Principe where we had lunch ( and also had some of the best food we've had in Italy).
We attended the festival which was a religious procession I think the whole town attended...coincidentally were next to a woman in the crowd who entertained our son, who we later figured out was the owner of Il Monaco. We returned to the hotel in the evening and were having some sandwiches in the sitting room while our baby slept...and the owner came and offered us some proscuitto and melon. In our travels, we found that the beds in Italy seem to be very firm and not all that comfortable. This was not the case at Il Monaco, the bed was very comfortable and our room had a charming "faux balcony" that overlooked the charming streets of Artena.
The morning included breakfast where they made us cappuccino's, had fruit, pastries, proscuitto, etc. The owner and the staff spent the morning entertaining our son while we ate breakfast and even gave him a little toy car and some cookies for the trip.
While this was only a one night stopover on our way to Rome, I wish we could have extended our stay at Il Monaco. The Italian hospitality was unmatched and was a fantastic way to end our 3 weeks in Italy.
