“Very Nice Hotel lacked the 5* touches”
Reviewed June 17, 2007

We stayed at this hotel for a week early in June, I am in agreement with the other review from early June, again we had the problem of mouldy fruit being left in our room to gather furr and attract a couple of cockroaches. Had a great deal of fun trying to catch them at 1 in the morning while my wife is screaming at me! lol.

Overall the hotel is nice and the main building is of a grandiour equivalent to lower level 5* hotels. We stayed in a beachfront junior suite which was again very nice with a four poster bed draped in linen which could have done with a wash. The room has its own sun loungered which attracted the sun until around 4pm so was nice to get away from the pool area to sun bathe.

The pool area is decent enough, we never had a problem getting a sunbed and we usually got the pool area for about 11am. Though the German's obviously had their usual ritual down to a tee as 30% of the sunbeds appeared to be reserved but no-one on them throughout the day.

Myself and my wife both found the food excellent, lots of choice of meats everyday and always hot. Even for fussy eaters like myself there was plenty of choice. Remembering this is a resort hotel, if we were staying in a city 5* hotel we would have expected much more.

Ok, so pretty good so far, Sorry but have a gripes on the hotel to moan about:

1) A five star hotel that charges €10 euro to use a fridge in the room, RIDICULOUS!

2) We have stayed in many other 4* hotels where fresh mineral water is provided in rooms every day. Not the case here.

3) We payed £20 per person to go all inclusive, at the hotel they were offering the same for €20 per person, feel a bit ripped off by Thomson and will be writing to them about it.

All in all a nice break, but not worth what we payed £1,700 for the week for the both of us. Have a look at alternative break in Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt Hilton Sharks Bay. Great holiday and only cost us £1,100 for the week.

Just returned from a week long break at the Atlantica Imperial. Overall, very impressed... really enjoyable break which was hard to fault. To be more specific:
Hotel - Fantastic complex, great 'finish' that wasn't too ostentatious but looked suitably impressive... was just as the brochure pictures portrayed (which isn't always the case!!). Good selection of activities for those that are interested, could do with a nice health spa complex though for ultimate relaxation.
Room - Very spacious, clean and well equipped (for a small fee!... safe and fridge are both considered extras). Slightly lacking in character, but not an issue as not a great deal of time spent there. Fruit and wine on arrival was a nice touch, however mouldy, week-old, cellophane wrapped fruit still not removed from the room when we came to check out wasn't such a nice touch, and isn't what you expect in a 5* resort.
Pool - Spent most of our time poolside and it was a nice place to be, clean, scenic, quiet, great bar... again, just like in the pictures!
Beach - Shingle, never really been a big fan of the beach and this one didn't do much to change my mind ... ventured on to it once - only to buy a doughnut, which incidentally was very good!
Resort - Kolymbia is a typical small holiday resoprt, lots of tourist shops peddling a range of tat, interspersed with a few bars and a couple of 'plastic tablecloth' restaurants... which don't look hugely appealing, but not an issue because...
Food - was very plentiful, well prepared / presented, with good variety. Some of it cooked fresh in front of you, quality was good on the whole (which is not true of the house wine ... which was about as nice as a glass of meths). Do have a meal in the Al-a-Carte restaurant though as the food, wine and service were all excellent. Would definitely recommend going all inclusive, as food / drink could work out expensive and the A.I. option caters for pretty much everything you could need.
Entertainment - Hmmmm, the Thomson team were very, er, trying! Although you can easily take it or leave it, my 'resident' spot at the poolside bar in the evening meant I was subjected to a range of mediocre singing / dance routines, a comedian (in the very loosest sense of the word) and a couple of other 'shows'. All distinctly average, it wont offend your ears but as background noise goes it could've been worse! Like I say, easy enough to avoid if amateur warblers, over-enthusiastic and under-talented dancers and 70's throwback comedians aren't your idea of 'entertainment'.
Misc. - Say hello to Stavros and Stelios from us... get to know the poolside bar staff and your glass will never be empty...!!
If you go to the A.I. you wont be disappointed. If you're under the age of 35, you may feel at times that you're on a SAGA holiday!!! ... at least it wont get too raucous though hey!

Me & my husband & another couple have just returned from 2 weeks at this hotel all inclusive & through Thomson. I found the hotel extremely clean & the hotel staff attentive (not the reps). It is in a quiet location with easy access to transport (buses, taxi, hire car) & sight see if you wanted to. The hotel does have a relaxed feel about it & we were able to totally chill & the no children was a real bonus because if you are not bringing children then you don't have to endure other peoples.
However I hate to moan but wish I had known before I went that although this hotel is classed as five star it was not as good as some 4 star I have stayed in. The holiday had a feel of penny pinching, could only use the sauna once a week & had to be pre booked, you had to pay to use the mini fridge in your room you had to pay for the sun beds right on the beach & the excuse was it is a public beach but the man who collected the money worked for the hotel!. Although the food was excellent it was not five star & was repetitive. The Al a Carte has to be paid for & pre booked, people who stayed there last year said the it had been included in all inclusive the previous years. My biggest disappointment was to learn that it was cheaper to upgrade to all inclusive at the hotel rather than before you go & you got the mini fridge included. Friends we made out there got it alot cheaper that way. Also the snooker table had to be paid for & it had seen better days. They had no games i.e. chess board etc & the darts, table tennis bats were not easily available & it was genrally tatty. These may seem really petty points to some I am sure but it was the little things that spoilt it & after the first few there were just to many to ignore in the end & as I said the meanness feeling did ruin it for me. Also we were told we had our rooms until 12 we decided to keep a room on between the 4 of us & when our friends returned to their room mid morning they had been locked out which felt abit we've had your money, next!.
Overall though the hotel staff do work really hard & always polite & the entertainment reps as someone previously said are there if you want but not in your face.
I would however not return as I do not think it was value for money & for what we paid I have had equal quality & facilities in four star hotels for a lot less money.

Just returned from The Atlantica Imperial after an extremely enjoyable two weeks spent with my wife, daughter and son-in-law. Our ages vary from 60 to 28 so our opinions of the hotel cover quite an age range. The hotel's public areas are not short of immaculate, extremely well presented and spotlessly clean. We booked superior rooms and found them to be spacious, well equipped and providing superb views. The pool area was as good as it gets, plenty of space and an adequate supply of beds. The Thomson entertainment team work non stop to provide activities for all. It was not 'in your face' but there if you wanted it. Although we did not attend many evening shows, when we did they were of a high standard. Although Kolymbia is not a bustling resort, the location of the hotel is wonderful - right on the beach with exceptional views. The staff in the hotel were very good, always available and willing to go that extra mile. For us, the icing on the cake has to be the food. My wife and I have travelled extensively over the past 40 years and we cannot remember such a wide and varied selection of extremely well presented food. Meals were a pleasure to look forward to and the only problem we had was deciding what to eat from the choice available. My daughter is vegetarian, but was also afforded ample choice and variety. Access to Rhodes and Lindos is easy, with public transport available from the hotel door. Antoni's bar on the right as you leave the hotel is a pleasant place to unwind and enjoy one of his many top class cocktails. Overall, our experience of the Atlantica is one to be savoured, and it is one of the few hotels that we would not hesitate in revisiting. Finally, the absence of children (with the odd non English exception) was a pleasure to behold. Go and enjoy !

Just returned after a one week holiday at this beautiful hotel. It was our first time at a thomson gold hotel and we were very impressed. The hotel is just absolutly stunning, it has a wonderful reception that is eyecatching as you walk in, the rooms are beautiful , grounds, pool etc, and the food is out of this world, lots of dishes cooked fresh in front of you, there is so much choice, there is something for everyone. Its the best hotel we have ever stayed in and we have stayed in many. The room we had was huge with a beautiful view of the pool and the sea.
The resort of Kolumbia however is very quiet with only a small few bars and restuarants but the hotel makes up for it. There is a bus stop opposite the hotel that will take you into Rhodes town, Lindos, Faliraki. Also as thomson dont take bookings for under 16 yrs olds it was more or less child free, apart from about 3 children that we saw through other foreign companies. It was bliss, so quiet a real nice change not to have screaming spoilt kids running round causing havoc. If your a couple and you want some peace then I would definately recommend this hotel. If anyone complains, then there is something seriously wrong with them or they are the type when they are never satisified with anything in life!

Hard to fault this hotel once you are inside (does not quite have the look of a grand hotel from the outside) very friendly and helpful staff, except it does fall short in certain areas. The levels of staff appear to match the size of what the hotel is aiming for with reception often deserted. Our room was in a seperate building overlooking the pool which gave great views out onto the sea, but the furnishings in the room were not as the brochure would have you believe. Pool areas very well kept, as were dining areas and food was of good quality. Bad points are that almost all guests were from our travel agency and all entertainment was provided by this agency which was a little full on at times. The resort is dead and there is hardly anywhere worth going unless you head in to nearby faliraki. Overall not a bad hotel, but some room for improvement

My hubby & I stayed here last July. It was our 1st experience of a hol without our own 2 sons & also our 1st Thomson Gold - ie. no kids under 16, except for a handful via other tour operators (eg Italian, German). The room was spacious, quiet & clean, with a lovely sea view. We found all staff to be very friendly, polite & helpful. We enjoyed the restaurant food & themed buffets; it was varied enough for us (we're very well travelled) The service was good. The beach is clean, relaxing & easily accessible. There's a small charge for beds. We generally prefer to go on the beach, rather than round the pool at most hotels, altho noted that the pool area was nicely laid out. The lounge bar staff were especially pleasant. We felt spoilt as there were 3 or 4 Thomson reps in the hotel. The nightly entertainment was equal to that which we've experienced on P&O cruise ships. We visited Rhodes town, Simi island, Lindos, Marmaris (Turkey) Butterfly Valley, Kameros & the natural springs, where we were delighted to see turtles swimming! The guides were of a high standard; we booked thru Thomson. Kolymbia is a small resort, with typically commercialised shops, bars, restaurants, but we're quite happy, just browsing around in the evenings & relaxing / sightseeing by day. The hotel is far enough along the main street that the noise doesn't interfere with the peace & quiet at Atlantica Imperial. There's a cliff walk, for the energetic & a long hill climb for the superfit! These can be done alone or thru one of the Thomson reps (free) so that a group of like minded people have the opportunity to go together.
My hubby enjoyed the golf, which isn't far away from the resort.
We'd have no hesitation in recommending the hotel to people who fancy a relaxing break. We hope to return but may not go in July again; it's very humid, which can be wearing, especially when sightseeing.
Apart from that, I can't think of anything negative to say about our 1st visit to Rhodes.
