“Overpriced, overhyped and overrated”
Reviewed June 20, 2010

This review applies to the Alexis 4 Seasons not the Alexis on Socratous. We chose it for the last night of our holiday and asked our hotel (the Nikos Takis) to make us a reservation on the roof terrace. This they did and even had a second conversation the night we went as we were warned by them that this might not be open due to the high wind. When we arrived, however, there was absolutely no evidence that anyone had bothered to make note of our reservation and certainly no mention of the roof terrace. The table we were shown to was not even laid and still had a dirty cloth on from the previous people.

The service was atrocious: surly, disinterested and unhelpful. We were not "allowed" to have what we had chosen from the menu. No clear reason was given but seemed to be rather that they could not be bothered. We were told to select a fish (supposedly fresh) from the cabinet and told we could have it grilled or cooked in foil. We chose the latter. The first courses were adequate although nothing special. The fish (supposedly filleted) was full of bones and virtually inedible although my husband's piece was better. Afterwards we were then left for over half an hour: no one came to clear the plates or offer us anything further. Instead, all the waiters concentrated on clearing tables etc. There were not many customers left so they didn't even have the excuse of being busy. We finally managed to get the bill (which came promptly - the only thing that did) and left without ordering coffee or dessert.

I did notice a number of locals come in whilst there but they were all led away somewhere else (perhpas the mythical roof terrace?) reinforcing the impression created by the restaurant that tourists were second class citizens whose only purpose was to pay inflated prices but who did not merit a decent meal in return. We had been warned Alexis was expensive but this would not have mattered so much had the service been worth it.

“Best in Rhodes”
Reviewed September 23, 2009

There are 2 Alexis restaurants, one at the Four Seasons and one on the main Sokratous (which I went to) - both owned by same. Understand the Sokratous one is the original - less touristy one.

Telling factor was that on the outside terrace onto the street it was only locals. restaurant has great (deserved) reputation.

Service is excellent, with no preference for locals over tourists and no snobbism.

Good wine list at correct prices.

Great choice of simple fresh starters of best quality.

Fish & seasfood - the best - you cannot be disappointed.

“The best in Rhodes Town ... by far.”
Reviewed May 31, 2009

Every time we visit Rhodes Town we make for Alexis 4 Seasons at 18 Socrates in the medieval old town as it is simply unbeatable, particularly for fresh fish and seafood. It was opened about 50 years ago and was the favourite restaurant of Sir Winston Churchill when he visited Rhodes to paint. He was clearly a fine judge and things do not appear to have changed much because the food and ambience are exceptional as endorsed by many of the locals who eat there. I nearly always start with the Simi Island shrimps which are lightly fried in their shells as the taste is quite exquisite. Another favourite is Sea Bass cooked in foil with various herbs, many of which are growing in the garden borders which surround the outside courtyard. Like most brilliant cooking it is relatively simple but relies on high quality produce and little touches of genius which the chef supplies. You are always welcome to tour the scrupuously clean kitchens and even to choose your own piece of fresh fish. What always amazes me is that within a hundred yards of this superb restaurant are about ten other restaurants, often packed out which are serving tourist rubbish of the burger, moussaka, greek salad and kebab variety. The restaurant is not the cheapest in town but compared with UK prices it is very reasonable for the level of food and wine that is on offer.

“Consistantly Excellent”
Reviewed April 7, 2009

We have been going to Alexis and Alexis 4 Seasons since 2002 when we bought our apartment on Rhodes. This was after visiting the island as holiday makers for 20 years so we are well-acquainted with the standard of other "touristy" Tavernas with their menus embracing all sorts of cuisines which their chefs are just not capable of producing. Alexis shines out among these as their menu is small but unique and all dishes exquisitely cooked by Yiannis and his colleagues. To complain about the freshness of the fish is ridiculous as all customers have the opportunity to select their own from the variety in the kitchen. Therefore freshness is assured. Try the octopus, calamari and cuttle fish with farfales in black ink, or prawns in ouzo - in fact everything on the menu is splendid, but not cheap. You have to pay for the best. Turning now to service we have never been disappointed with the friendliness and helpfulness of the waiting staff and unreservedly recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting to sample fine fish cuisine in the historic building in the heart of the Old Town. Like your earlier contributor we have also never been offered the 'customary,' water melon at the end of the meal although we have been offered and enjoyed many mouthwatering sorbets and other desserts 'on the house'. Perhaps this is not the best venue for parties of 10 straight off the boat but an ideal and unrushed gastronomic delight for everyone else. Thank you all at Alexis for the many lovely afternoons and evenings. See you soon.

Pat and Debbie

“Absolutely Magic”
Reviewed December 4, 2008

As the parents of triplets we were looking for somewhere special to take them on their 21st birthday.
Having chosen Alexis4seasons we searched for a special restaurant to celebrate on the big day. Having read the reviews here we plumped for the Alexis4seasons and we weren't disappointed.
The food was fantastic and the service first class. They even made us a special birthday cake!
Pretty expensive but then we did have very nice wine! But worth every penny! As it is well of the beaten track we would never have found it without Trip advisor. So thanks a million!
