Me and my partner spent 1 week at the Lomeniz Beach Hotel at the beginning of August. This wasn't an expensive trip or a really cheap one, we paid somewhere in the middle of the options available and so long as you appreciate that is the level you are booking at I don't think the Lomeniz Beach Hotel disappoints.
It is quite basic, on our arrival one of the two lifts wasn't working, our room 257 (at the rear of the hotel) was still easy enough to get to, there is a bit of a superficial crack in the wall above the bed, otherwise the room was clean, had a fridge that worked, air con that worked and a balcony that got a reasonable amount of sun. The TV has a range of channels in different languages, not many in English, only the news really and the remote didn't fully work. There were only 2 pillows provided but more were available when we asked. The mixer shower over the bath works fine, the fabric shower curtain was a bit old and frayed and the bathroom turns into a steamroom easily due to the lack of any ventilation. The towels provided were clean, replaced daily but they were a little on the rough side. I suppose it depends how much those little things will bother you, for us they didn't and we were happy with our room.
The staff are quite approachable and welcoming. The bar man Christos was always interested in what we had done each day and can provide some good tips and advice for where to go etc. The bar area has free Wifi and can be quite an unsocial place at times with everyone tuned into their phones and tablets. The Lomeniz attracts a large number of other nationalities, whilst we were there it was obvious there were a large number of Russian and Italian guests and so being sociable is somewhat non existent anyway. In the bar area there is a pool table which has a serious roll to it and there is no chalk for the cues, games cost 2 euro. There is also an air hockey table, the air pressure isn't right though and it is barely worth trying to play, games cost 1 euro for what must be about 2 minutes. The pool area is nice and relaxing, there don't seem to be many sunbeds in comparison to the size of the hotel yet this didn't seem to be a problem during our stay, however it may be an idea to get up early if planning a day by the pool. Next to the pool is a snack bar which is reasonably priced and in the shade. There are probably about 20 sunbeds and about 8 umbrellas, so there are some sunbeds that have no option for shade.
The hotel itself is set in an area fairly free from tourism, it seems to be more of an area where the locals live, there are still some shops and restaurants in easy walking distance though. The first place we found was a little Greek takeaway where you can sit in, it is just around the corner and serves yummy Gyros and Souvlaki at a reasonable price. There is also a stoney beach over the dual carriageway. This beach has a very obvious sewage pipe in the middle of it, the beach is quite smelly, littered and unkempt which if you like that sort of thing is fine but there are many better beaches on Rhodes, even if it means a trip down the road to Faliraki. The hotel is about a mile from the old town, the easiest route to walk is down a road called Kanada, if you can find it it is a straight walk towards the edge of old town and probably takes 15-20 minutes. otherwise taxi's are easy to get and cost around 5-10 euro between Rhodes town and the hotel. Small car hire is quite a challenge, you either have to get there early or at about 5pm when some cars have been returned. Try the area around the university and near M&S for car hire places if you get really stuck. At the time of our visit driving conditions were terrible, mainly due to the lack of road markings which makes it really quite dangerous.
We booked bed and breakfast, the breakfast was a real let down for me. The weird cooked breakfast on offer consists of sliced potatoes which are layered and cooked in plenty of oil, as such the bottom is soggy and the top is over crisp. the eggs are either fried or an omelette/scrambled type tray bake that is divided into cubes (these two types alternate days), there are mini saveloy type sausages, baked beans and sometimes (I think it was just one day of the week) bacon rashers. There are also copious amounts of boiled eggs available. Otherwise there is salad, cheese, ham, cakes, bread rolls, croissants, coco flakes, corn flakes, fruit, fruit juice, tea and coffee. The coffee is really quite nice, the croissants are a bit tough and also be WARNED the things that look like pain au chocolate are actually pain au feta cheese or pain au spinach! The food doesn't stay very warm and overall is quite disappointing, glad we only booked breakfast.
Overall as a young couple we found that at Lomeniz we were in easy distance of everything Rhodes had to offer, either a short walk into Rhodes town or when we got a car and went to Faliraki, Lindos, Ixia and the butterflies. It could be more luxurious and could do with some updating but I'm sure there are worse places to stay, at least Lomeniz has a sea view. It was trouble free, even the other noisy guests didn't really bother so there must be some substance to the walls, either that or we were very tired from all the walking. I wouldn't be worried about booking here again but I would consider if maybe I needed more luxury in my life.
