I have just returned from the Avra Beach Hotel after staying for two weeks in a bungalow. Found the staff very helpful and polite, in particular the restaurant manager was very welcoming. Animation team were unfaultable and all work hard throughout the day and night. Location is perfect, right on the beach with a great view of Turkey from the restaurant. Food is repetitive but good, maid service was also very good and rooms were cleaned to a high standard everyday. I would recommend this hotel to anybody looking to stay in Rhodes.

Room Tip: Second floor in the Bungalows.

Stayed in this hotel with friends after reading a lot of raving reviews on tripadvisor and getting a recommendation from a friend of ours who has been born and raised in Rhodes. Well, while I have no horror story to share and the hotel was in all fairness decent, I was truly disappointed with the overall hotel experience. Although not directly the hotel management's fault, the tourism promoted is of a low quality and folklore in nature; your day in this hotel starts off with the breakfast - lots of choice; helpful staff; spacious restaurant with interior and exterior sections; that said, the breakfast hours are somewhat unfriendly (7.30 to 9.30 am, a bit on the early side); the coffee you get is a scorching american coffee I would be crazy to drink at the 30+ temperatures on this island in the summer months; and all that against a music backdrop of ABBA and Demis Rousos! We all know that Rhodes has a great touristic tradition of attracting Scandinavians, but listening to a full ABBA record in the morning is unnecessary and VERY outdated...The food you get in your all inclusive package for the rest of the day is of below average quality and doesn't live up to the quality of the breakfast. We spent money we hadn't planned for eating out after having lunch in the hotel on our first day - the burning aftertaste of the olive oil in my salad that lasted all day long was enough to put us off from trying hotel food again. As part of our all inclusive package we even dared order a margarita on our first night - well, again, the title margarita is a euphemism - I'm not much of a drinker but I know enough about cocktails to know that pouring soda, vodka and lemon juice in a water glass with 2 ice cubes and a straw DOESN'T produce a margarita! Avra beach management, please take this off your catalog if you can't afford to offer a decent drink! Last but not least, at the end of each day (between 10pm and midnight) you get, ahem, a live show - be it karaoke, Greek dancing, or a fakir performance. As a native Greek leaving abroad for many years, I have travelled all around Greece and most islands. Well, nothing compares to watching any of these shows! They're tacky, folklore, and frankly made me feel ashamed of what the (many) non Greeks staying in this hotel might think of Greece. I can reassure you that regardless of the recent 'crisis' crisis and all the hype around it, the Greeks don't spend their time dancing Zorba, screaming 'OPA'!, eating feta cheese and drinking ouzo - images that these shows conjured up in my mind. Again, I repeat that's not the Avra hotel management's fault per se, as walking around Ixia sadly confirmed that other hotels seem to offer very similar 'spectacles' to their guests - so it's really the tourist authorities on Rhodes that deserve the full earful here, and I'll get to it immediately. All in all, the hotel was very clean. We got fresh and clean towel supplies every day. The staff were very polite and allowed a super late check out on our last day for free. The hotel location (Ixia) is excellent, and there is a car rental office right next to it with very decent prices, so look no further if you're interested in renting one (a must if you plan to explore the island; it's the 3rd largest in Greece, and although we're not great adventurers, we managed to do 1000 miles of driving in 4 days!!) - the 2 stars for the hotel go to these budget food offers and distasteful shows that I would never subject myself to again. The island of Rhodes is of excellent natural beauty. The beaches (especially Tsampika) are amazing, with sunbeds and showers everywhere. The road network throughout the island is superb and up to the standard of the Dodekanese islands, that you will not find anywhere else in Greece! The old town and the medieval castle, as well as the butterfly forest are all a must. The food at the local tavernas is truly excellent and very cheap for Greek island standards. The locals are so friendly and always helpful with recommendations or driving directions! Most of them speak English as with any other Greek island. If it hadn't been for the tourist authorities allowing incongruous, monstrously ugly hotel buildings, car rentals, far way too many supermarkets to destroy the natural beauty of the island, I'd visit again. For people new to the world of Greek islands, and especially if you have no children or a very tight budget to stick to, you're better off trying other islands first (Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Naxos are all fantastic summer islands with airport access that will give you a far better and sweeter 'taste' of Greece you'll get addicted to!).

Me and my boyfriend visited Avra Beach in August and whilst we got a fairly good deal, we were also quite disappointed by several aspects of our holiday.

The Good
The overall look of the hotel was good and we had a large room which was cleaned daily. We had a nice bowl of fruit on the first day which was a nice touch. The AI was fairly good, there was an ok range of food and usually found something to eat most days, drinks are also good as there are help yourself points in both the pool bar and restaurants.

Ixia itself its a bit rubbish but location is near to Rhodes Town, which is lovely. Go to the shopping centre next to the hotel and sigma travel where you'll get much better deals on trips. We went to Lindos which was lovely and the water park and both were very good trips at cheaper prices than the reps offered.

Entertainment did not really interest us but they weren't pushy and let us be. Staff were usually quite friendly

The Bad
Where do I start?! The complex was simply not big enough for the number of guests in the hotel (we calculated 750ish). The pool is small and there are not enough sunbeds (unless you got up at 7am to reserve one, which my lovely boyfriend did). The beach location is nice but as mentioned the actual beach is not really existent and pebbles hurt our feet. The place was overun with kids and foreign people who were messy and rude (that applies to both). Our hotel room overlooked the shopping centre next door and they played v loud music every other night from 11.30 till 1am, also thanks to the couple across the hall who had massive arguments at 3am in the hallway - excellent!

The restaurant was a bit of a joke. Almost every mealtime we had to queue to get in and service was very hit and miss. Sometimes we got coffee at breakfast, sometimes not, we often had to find our own cutlery, food was repetitive and not restocked quick enough.

The beach bar was smelly and messy a lot of the time. With children helping themselves to icecream etc it was pretty gross and the food there was disgusting.

Our room was cleaned and beds made daily but there was nothing 4* about it, no extra touches such as toiletries, water restocked in fridge etc. The balcony was not very nice and so we didn't use it much. Beds were pushed together to make a double and not specially comfortable.

Overall, a nice holiday but will definitely be booking a more luxurious holiday next year. 14nights was too long at this hotel. Much more suited towards families.

Room Tip: Bungalows looked nicer than the hotel

just got back from a two week stay at the Avra, one word: brilliant! The animation team were what made the holiday special, they were always active and keeping everyone entertained. They should get more credit! The food was delicious and there was a lot of different things each night. The rooms were well kept and the chambermaids were friendly, although it was difficult to open the fridge due to not very much room. The air conditioning in the room was a lifesaver; it was quiet which meant you could sleep with it on. The bathroom lighting was not great. The beach and swimming pool areas were well cleaned and easily accessible. The barman were brilliant, very friendly and reliable. Overall the hotel was well kept and the staff were very friendly. Well done to Chris, Joey and the rest of the animation team for keeping us entertained!

Got back this morning from Avra Beach Hotel. Very hot, hotel on beach, lovely bar, drinks served in glasses, not paper cups! Food very good. Animation Team Excellent, don't know how they do it. Alas, our bungalow room was very disappointing, so dated, air con worked though, only broke down once, when water poored out of it, but fixed immediately. In fact, it was the only place where we felt cool! There is a distinct lack of air conditioning throughout the hotel, not good in 90deg heat! Usually hotel foyers are cool, not this one! Restaurant too hot along with the Wine, we used to order ice to put in our glasses! Waiting Staff and Bar Staff the best, they work so hard.

A lot of money for dated accommodation and too hot in August.

Room Tip: Only saw our room so can't compare, but it was in a quiet part of complex away from actitivies
