This museum is in memory of the disappearing Jewish community which was a very vibrant community before the nazis took over the island during the second world war. members of the community were sent to concentration camps and slaughtered there. The museum founded by the grandson of Rhodes Jews who left before the second World War to the USA depicts beautifully Jewish life and tradition in Rhodes with photos and authentic documents. It's not easy to find the Museum in the Old city of Rhodes because the Municipality has not found it necessary to put up large and clear sighns showing the way. I have written to the Mayor today and hope he will find the way to remedy this for a major tourist attraction which the UN declared a worlwide historical site with the Synagogue built in the late 1500s. The visit is a must.

The synagogue where the museum is situated is in the old Jewish quarter of Rhodes old town and is beautifully restored by funding from an American Jewish Greek. The pictures and displays of the clothing are amazing, even a wedding dress on display. As you go around haunting music is played, folk music that was played by the former residents both joyous and sad. Tragic to think that of 1600 Jews deported to the Natzi concentration camps only around 120 survived. I am not Jewish but was moved to silent tears reading of this horror. Don't let me put you off it is so, so worth a visit and is a really fantastic opportunity to see a synagogue in all it's glory. We of course must never forget.

From the Holocaust Memorial just a minute walk. It is adjacent to the Kahal Shalom Synagogue.
If you are Jewish you will be interested and will go there but if you're not Jewish the place has historic connotation and certainly worth a visit

This is why we went to Rhodes. In 1944, eight months before WWII ended, all the Jews of Rhodes were rounded up and taken to Auschwitz My husband's parents were born in Rhodes and his granny was one of the people who were taken away. Ba very emotional experience.

The museum is in the last synagogue left in Rhodes. It is beautifully kept and full of interesting and touching relics of a way of life which all but extinct.
