We stayed here for a week. We came from 3 days in Oia then went to to 4 days in Fira. Although the towns on the caldera rim have the best character and breathtaking views they are also expensive, and there is little to do there that doesn't cost money. Perissa on the other hand is a strange little town that manages to be quite busy and yet quiet at the same time. Villa Valvis is a cheap place to stay and is aimed at those on a tight budget. The rooms are equipped with hot plate, fridge sink cupboards and plates cutlery etc so it it possible to make simple pasta dishes and salads. We enjoyed this aspect as even in Perissa the food is not as cheap as you might expect. Having said that it's cheaper than anywhere else on the island so you might as well enjoy it. We found the room clean and spacious for what we needed. The pool was lovely and the beach very close. There is internet access/quad bike hire (very cheap)/ food shops and loads of taverns and snack places on the doorstep. There is also a brilliant bakery around the corner. If you are on a tight budget i would strongly recommend somewhere like Villa Valvis as a base as the rest of the island is pretty accessible by quad bike from there and the prices to live are much cheaper than up on the rim. You can see a video of our room here:

Plus points: proximity to beach/amenities, cost of food/drink, friendliness of owners (marina gave me loads of free drink!) plenty of affordable places to eat ( we got a shared salad, bread, fish platter, ouzo, fruit, 1/2 litre wine for 20 Euros all in). Cheap hire of a quad makes the rest of the island accessible in the day. Get out there!

Negatives: I didn't like the beach much as it was quite course black sand. We had 3 American girls in the next room who would come in at 1Am and talk loudly till3. To be fair to them they were just talking and we didn't tell them to can it but be aware that it's the sort of place where lively young people are going to be doing that sort of thing and the walls aren't very soundproof!

This hotel is a good value for what you pay. It is by no means a 5 star hotel, but I would say its a step up from a hostile. I received my own room, which actually had 2 beds and a fridge. The room was roomy and very clean. The bathroom was tiny - like any bathroom I have encountered in greece. I didn't spend much time at all in the room, so I didn't' mind. My room was right in front of the pool and had a little patio with chairs if you wanted to sit out. The owner greeted me as soon as I got out of the cab and showed me to my room and explained where everything was. The hotel was located off a sidestreet and the black beach was within a five minute walk to the beach, bars and restaurants.

The owner met us at the door and showed us to our lovely room, this hotel was clean and perfectly located within a 5 min walk of the bars and resturants and the beautiful beaches. The owner and her husband were lovely and nothing was to much trouble. TIP Beach Bar does lovely food and a great night out on a saturday night. Great Hotel, Great Island.

We had a studio for 5 days in the third week of May and it worked well for us. The hotel is located on a side street which connects to both the main road into Perissa and the beach road which runs along the seafront. It's just a few minutes walk to all the amenities but with empty lots to front and rear is much quieter than hotels either on the main road or on the beach (where there are many bars and nightspots).
The studio was very clean and had the sort of basic functional furnishings you expect in any mediterranean 'pensione' style accomodation. It was light and airy and each room had its own balcony or patio space with a table and 2 chairs. The 'kitchen' was one wall cupboard with dishes in, one base cupboard supporting the sink and 3 drawers with cutlery and utensils etc. There was an under-counter size fridge with ice box (but no ice tray) and a little electric table top hot ring. It was perfectly adequate for our short stay but would present a challenge if you really intended to fully self-cater a longer stay. There are both convenience stores and a supermarket within 2 minutes walk, also a post office, internet cafe and a 24 hour bakery which is to be recommended.
The pool is pleasant, well-maintained and has a childrens' shallow section and a corner with jets (like a Jacuzzi but without heat). There are thatched shade 'umberellas' and sun loungers provided; there is also a poolside bar although it was not open until the last day of our stay as we were relatively early in the season.
The empty lot opposite provides off street parking if you have a rental car (but no shade) and the owners are friendly and helpful without being too much.
Overall this property represents excellent value for money especially for the mature budget traveller who might appreciate a quieter location.
