“extremely basic greek accomodation”
Reviewed July 28, 2006

We stayed in the Villa Markos for one week, more than long enough. As it was a last minute deal we weren't expecting a lot but it is very poor value for money even if you get it cheaper. The rooms were cleaned daily but the sheets and towels were well past their best, holey and threadbare. If you are planning to self-cater any of your meals here then think again, there was no suitable equipment and the fridge had to be switched off if you wanted to sleep as it was like a drill all night long! The pool is very small and to get to most of the beds you have to swim through it first!!! The balconies aren't private so if you want to enjoy a quiet drink think again - get to know your neighbours well as ours could see into our room if we didn't close the shutters!!! And the noise from the Greek Family who live on site was worse than any of the guests!!
The positive points for this accomodation have to be the location as it is a stones throw from the beach and restaurants etc. and Daniel the barman who seems to run the place single handedly.
We loved Santorini but won't stay in this accomodation or recommend it to anyone.

Spent 2 weeks here and can honestly say this is by far the friendliest hotel we have stayed in, nothing is too much trouble for them.
However it is also the dirtiest hotel we have stayed in and it is way overdue for some serious money to be spent on it.
Our room was spacious but the bathroom was awful. The toilet had never been cleaned until i took bleach too it.
The utensils, cups, pans were filthy we never used any of them at all.
Our beds were comfy enough but the sheets were grey and threadbare and looked dirty even though they werent, and as for the towels, the notice board had the cheek to tell you not to use them as floor cloths when obviously thats what they had previously been used for.
We appreciate that Greek accomodations are basic and you dont get little things like a proper bath or shower but there is no excuse for a place to not be clean this to me is paramount and the saying that you here often is "you are in Greece this is how it is" well no im sorry it isnt for me especcially as this hotel could be lovely.
At the moment this place certainly isnt for the guests who have experienced nice hotels.

Some previous reviews have complained about the facilities at the Villa Markos, but I'd have to say that those people clearly haven't experienced typical Greek accommodation before.

Villa Markos is no worse than other self catering Greek apartments we've stayed in, and in fact has much to recommend it.

First of all, the location is probably the best in Perissa, situated as it is exactly between the main drag and the beach road. It's no more than a two minute walk to anywhere you'd want to go, but at the same time, you're not bothered by moped traffic. Perfect.

As noted, the room was basic, although it did have a double bed as opposed to the two singles you usually get, so that was a bonus. The room was scrupulously cleaned at around 10am every morning, and fresh towels were left about every two days, so absolutely no complaints there.

The staff were fantastic, and were more than happy to let you help yourself to drinks from the fridge at the bar (as long as you told them what you were having), without having to keep money about you all day while you lazed by the pool. Markos and Spiros were always cheerful, and Christos the barman / receptionist / whatever was great fun, very helpful and slightly bonkers.

Greek night on a Sunday was a blast, and a good way to meet the other guests. Pretty good value at 10 euros too.

Some people have also complained about the noise from the bar, which again we never experienced. There was music throughout the day, although it tended to be of the chilled, ambient variety, and was pretty inoffensive. We tended to go out during the evening, but any night we did return early, it wasn't a problem.

Only real problem we had was with the air conditioning. We paid extra for the air conditioning, and we were a little disconcerted to find water pouring through it in the middle of the night. This was due to the tank overflowing on the balcony, and was easily rectified.

The bed, too, was a little past its best and not terrifically comfortable, although it was clean enough.

Overall, I'd say the Villa Markos probably needs a little freshening up, as the bed, fridge and bathroom were starting to feel a little tired. However, these are very minor quibbles.

Perissa itself is wonderful and very laid back - more so than nearby Kamari. Food was excellent, with the best restaurants being the Acropolis, Kalimera and Traffico. Dorians pub is well worth a stop, and at three euros for any cocktail on the menu, frighteningly easy to get smashed in.

The 24 hour bakey at the top of the main road is also a must, as they do a wonderful potato pie.

Overall, I'd recommend Perissa and the Villa Markos to anyone. We'll be back.

The worst apartments we have ever stayed in! They were dirty, poorly maintained with jobs started in the rooms and not finished. We arrived and wanted to leave immediately. The bathroom still had the soap & hair remains of the previous accupants, the bed linen was so thin and grey you felt dirty after laying on it. The towels were disgusting. The kitchen utensils were virtually non existent not that we could even contemplate eating iin the apartment. The swimming pool area was so crammed with sunbeds there was no walking space, it was clearly a health & safety risk. The music played all day & night until the early hours making it impossible to sleep. We holiday 3-4 times a year, love to enjoy ourselves but this was no enjoyment. We are so pleased we were only there a week, we have wanted to go to Santorini for a few years now and can say that after the Markos Apartments experience we will probably not go back.

We have just returned from a week at the Marco Studios, we being myself, husband and 14 year old daughter. Perissa itself was as described in the first review but we were very disappointed with the acommodation. We were initially put into a mainsonette room which smelt damp, had a tired and dirty kitchen, with minimal equipment and was situated right above the bar. We asked to move and were given a slightly improved room but still opposite the bar which was the bane of our week. It played loud music continually and on 'Greek night' the music went on until 3am. The hotel is a in a quiet residential area- not on a main street. The music seemed to be for the benefit of the barman and he alone. He mentioned that someone the previous week has also complained about the noise.
If like me you go to Greece for the peace, food, sun and lovely scenery don't stay in this hotel there are plenty of nicer ones.

We visited the Marcos apartments this July, and have to say we were all really impressed with the friendliness of the staff and family, the location, the cleanliness and amenities available nearby.
There was four adults in our group in early forties, one child age 9 and two fourteen year olds, so a mixed bag in terms of requests for a holiday. The apartments were on a quiet road in Santorini, approx 7 mins walk from the beach. They were very clean, linen was changed every other day, and the rooms cleaned every day. The lady responsible for this was called Oana (waana) and she was really lovely. Her boyfriend was Florin, and he ran the bar and supervised everything happening there it seemed. He was the most helpful and patient person we had ever met on an apartment holiday; he was always available with a smile, and never had a day off the whole fortnight we were there. He worked early morning to late evening with it seemed never pausing for breath! The pool was small, but clean. Air conditioing was charged extra, but very efficient and worth the expense. The beach at Perissa was really quite quiet, with hot sand but cool, clear water which although dipped away quickly, was very pleasant. There were plenty of umbrellas, sunbeds and shade available, at various prices, depending upon where on the stretch of beach you wanted to lie. There was a small company running water sports, and various foot massages available by people on the beach at quite high prices. Most of the bars in the evening were efficiently run, our favourites being Veggera, Cathalina, Acropolis and Gods garden. The meals and drinks were all reasonably priced and really relaxed atmosphere could be found in all the places we visited. We enjoyed eating along the beach road; the views of the sea as the moon rose were beautiful. The top road was a lot busier; although cocktails were cheaper there, the standard of food was not as good or varied. We visited the volcano which involved a lengthy swim to reach the land after jumping from the boat, and quite a steep climb up to it. We visited Kamari, by water taxi, and found a very pleaseant assortment of small shops and two fantastic jewellers with beautiful designer pieces very reasonably priced. The sunset at Oia was lovely, but quite over rated, and really busy. Get a table early at the vantage point and stay put is my advice! The trip around the beaches on a small boat was fun and everyone enjoyed diving into the beautiful Aegean waters. Fira was OK, full of tourist shops and very busy about 5pm, but worth a visit as it is the capital. We all enjoyed a fantastic fortnight in a quiet but interesting resort, and although the two fourteen year olds wanted a little more entertainment, we didnt. Guess that could have been their age! Would definitely visit again, and recommend.
